1 FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH Janice Nelson, Editor October 16, 2015 Editor s Comments It s definitely the ideal time to get out and enjoy the fall foliage and its unforgettable reflection in our beautiful, pristine lake. The temperatures have started to dip in the evening hours so that thoughts of winter no longer seem as improbable as a few weeks ago. This is my first FWIW and I must thank Cathy Young for serving as its editor for well over a decade. For two years as a weekend/vacation homeowner and now a full-time one since August, I always looked forward to this essential newsletter for keeping up with the Alpine Lake community and its many ongoing activities. Cathy always succeeded in keeping FWIW positive and upbeat, as well as informative, and you can be assured this will not change under my editorship. I encourage all readers to take an active part in this publication by forwarding me your ideas and thoughts on how to make FWIW even better in the coming weeks and months. TIMELY NOTICES AND REMINDERS EGGS/PRODUCE Sheila Amato James Stemple, our local farmer, will resume his delivery of brown (usually jumbo) eggs to the Rhododendron Room on Wednesday, October 21. He typically arrives between 11-11:15 AM and is GONE by 11:30. You need to pick up your order during this time frame or make arrangements for someone to pick it up for you. After this date, he will bring eggs every 2 weeks on a Wednesday; same time frame. The cost is $3.00 per dozen. I will send out an reminder on the Friday before the Wednesday delivery date. You can respond via (brltrans@frontier.com) or phone ( ) to place your order/how many dozen eggs you want. Orders must be placed no later than Sunday night; I call in our order early on Monday morning. I will use the reminder list from last year to start this ball rolling. If you want your name removed from the list, or if you want your name added, please let me know. James also has (frozen) beef, pork, turkey, lamb and chicken for sale. 2 FREE LIBRARY IN RHODERDENDRON ROOM Sheila Amato Our Alpine Lake [free] library housed in the Rhododendron Room in the Ruby Lodge has flourished this year. Our bookcases have been overflowing with an eclectic variety of books for your reading pleasure, including children s story books. Please continue to take books; the winter is a wonderful time to snuggle up with a book. Returns are not necessary. Donations of your gently read books are always appreciated. Please just leave them on the bookcase and they will be shelved. Happy Reading! ************************************************************************************ THOUGHTS, PRAYERS AND THANK YOU MESSAGES This section of FWIW is one of the best loved because it gives us an opportunity to keep up with our neighbors and friends by reporting good news as well as offering support when folks are going through difficult times. Thank you for passing along updates and news, with permission. The following statement is with sincere gratitude from Dave Gardner s wife Nancy and family: Your sympathy and thoughtfulness will always be gratefully remembered and deeply appreciated! George Fetcho wishes to thank the Alpinites and others (friends and foe) who have helped to make his summer enjoyable. He is looking forward to his 38 th year next summer! A big THANK YOU to all! It s hard to find the right words to thank everyone who came out to spend a beautiful afternoon at the boathouse on Sunday, October 4 th, to wish us well as we prepare to leave Alpine for the next chapter of our lives. It was both overwhelming and heart-warming, and we were very touched. It is bittersweet for us as we leave our home and all the friends we have made during our 12 years here. We are excited about moving closer to family, and are happy we can do it together and by choice. We sincerely hope many will stay in touch after we move, and there will also be occasions when we come back to Alpine to see everyone. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. 3 HAPPENINGS AROUND THE LAKE & NEARBY ACOUSTIC OPEN MIC REPORT by Ron Rogers, Open Mic Host Thursday, October 8 th It was a fun night of favorites! Thirty-two folks and six performers this late in the season is GREAT! I m always grateful and thankful for the support. I apologize for leaving a few times but I needed to go somewhere to cough without disturbing the whole room. Thanks to Ginger for counting the house. Depending on weather (and health) we only have two weeks left! So, if you want to perform and you ve been putting it off, GET BUSY! Or, if you just want to sing a song and don t play an instrument, maybe I could back you up. Next week s theme is a new song. Please bring at least one song you ve never performed at Open Mic before. FUN-FIT CORNER Compliments of the AM Aerobics Group We re losing some of our regular members, but gaining others, so classes continue to be THE place to be for an hour Mon., Wed. & Fri. Newcomers are made to feel welcome the minute they walk in the door, so come out and see for yourself how great exercising with a group can be. The leader and music make it even more fun. Start class at 9 AM and usually go for coffee and fellowship afterward. Everyone welcome start anytime. See you there. PROJECT NORTH POLE UPDATE by Cathy Young Thanks to the generosity of Alpine folks and others who came to our Craft Show, we are able to donate to this year s Project North Pole which provides gifts for parents to give their children at Terra Alta School. We delivered nearly 60 assorted scarves (some for little girls dolls), plus hats for boys and girls and assorted other hand-made gifts. In addition, a cash donation of $ will help the organizers of this worthwhile project purchase gifts for the children. We can always count on the Alpine community to support our outreach programs, and we thank you for helping make Christmas a little brighter for many of our local children. Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. 5 ALLGO League Many of our ladies continue to golf on Thursdays, as long as the weather cooperates, even though our official league has ended for the year. AM tee times available or choose to play at a different time. Just check with the Pro Shop and get out there! Happy Golfing. STROKERS NEWS by Loring Young Oct 5 th 2015: The Commish was OOT and the stand-in was under the weather (??). However, a few rogue Strokers descended upon the golf course uncontrolled and unsanctioned (those devils). It is interesting, according to rumors, that neither of the two teams finished 1 st. What is that all about? Oct 12 th 2015: Beautiful day, God did good! A turnout of 14 long-time dependable Strokers took advantage of the great fall weather and enjoyed the golf and fellowship during dinner afterward at the lodge. George Fetcho was once again on time and when George shows up, we are assured of no rain. And, yet again, George came through. By month s end most of our tried and true Strokers will be honing their game in warmer climates feel sorry for them. Not! Here are the bragging rights winning teams: 1 st -2: Boyd Weiss, Lough Cosner, Dottie & Skip Creamer 2 nd place---@ -1: George Fetcho, John Bowers, Cathy & Loring Young (who?) 3 rd place--@ Even: Birgit & Bernie Stock, and Sam Berry We had a late entry of an all-female team, who had practiced the front nine in hopes of cracking one of the top three winner spots. Not a chance ladies (Ann Dunson, Vickie Mastalerz & Sue Aamodt) with all the talent in the Stroker field but thanks for joining us. Cathy and I are saying good-bye to all our Stroker friends. As a result, a Commish is needed for next year. Not too much work when done as a team (Cathy), so step out of your comfort zone and pick up the Stroker Ball and enjoy the camaraderie and kibitzing. Give me a call and I will turn over the Holy Grail Book of Strokers to you. Thank You to Skip Creamer for capping off our evenings with laughter. Note: We should not lose sight of the value the weekly events, such as Strokers golf and Shuffleboard, have to the lodge in the form of dinners, drinks, gratuities to the staff and other lodge expenditures. WINTERING IN FL by Michele Hall & Wilma Rumble Please join us at Bok Gardens on Tuesday, Dec. 8 th to enjoy the Christmas at Bok Gardens display. Bok Gardens is easily accessible to where many of us spend the chilly months. It is worth a visit just for the Gardens, but especially in December, when they really get in the holiday spirit! The house is decorated for Christmas, special Carillon Concerts are offered, special themes and guided tours, etc. If enough of us rsvp, we can check about group pricing. Thanks and hope to see you! TREES FOR SPRING PLANTING The West Virginia Forestry Department sells seedlings. Several property owners have expressed interest in planting some red bud trees. The minimum order is 25 for 3 year old bare root trees and cost $2 per tree. We would order them for spring planting. If you are interested, contact John Laing at (304) or laingjc@juno.com. We could also order other varieties, but again would need to order in bunches of 50 trees (see THE MALAWI PROJECT Tony & Sheila Amato Anyone on prescription medicines finds themselves a bit uncomfortable when throwing away so many empty medicine bottles. It is obvious our landfills do not need these plastic containers! There is enough trash going into the landfills already. While first -world nations throw away perfectly good medicine bottles, medical pharmacies and hospital facilities in Malawi often find themselves with nothing except torn pieces of paper in which to wrap medicine for their patients. This is often seen in rural hospitals and villages where the poorest of the nation try to live and survive. You can help to change this. Save up a group of your pill containers when you have completed that portion of your prescription. Place them in boiling water until you are able to easily remove the labels and the glue (or we will remove them before shipping them out). Drop them off at the reception desk at the Lodge and they will be collected and sent to the Malawi Project for shipment to Malawi. You can also include plastic containers that aspirin and vitamins come in. Our efforts will help families in a third world country keep their medicines clean, out of reach of small children, and safe while they are being used. 6

COMMITTEE REPORTS ECC COMMITTEE by Dick Gallagher, Chair The beautiful colors of fall are on the trees and will soon be on the ground. We remind owners that there can be no open burning of leaves and branches. Also, leaves have overtaken the roadways and it is difficult to determine where the paved portion ends. Please be careful! Also, if you come upon your neighbor using a leaf blower to rearrange the leaves in the yard, remember that he can t hear you and is probably focused on the leaves, so drive slowly and cautiously. We are again asking owners to display their house numbers so they are clearly visible from the street. It is both a requirement of Preston County and a common-sense means of identifying your home in case of emergency. This may be especially important to those of you who are leaving for the winter, so please get those numbers posted. Reminder: All For Sale and realtor signs must be removed by December 31st. We are working with the marketing committee and the realtors on an alternative, less obtrusive means to help homeowners who wish to sell their properties. Further information should be available soon. COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE by Charlotte Wiles, Chair The 2016 Alpine Lake Calendar will hopefully be published in the next two weeks. We will definitely have a date when the next FWIW is published. All dates for any events must be in by October 25, PROPERTY OWNERS COMMITTEE by Bernie and Birgit Stock, Co-Chairs The final report on the Oktoberfest is in. With proceeds in and bills paid the Committee showed a gain of $6100. This includes income from the Fest, Breakfast, Romeos feed and donations. Our expenditures were $4700. (They are available for any PO to audit.) Thanks again to all who were involved in making it happen. MARKETING COMMITTEE Ronnie Schiffbauer & Rich Nelson, Co-Chairs The Marketing Committee continues to work with the ECC and realtors for a resolution to not posting "For Sale" signs in our community. Other similar communities use small wooden mail box type structures or black/white metal brochure boxes that are complementary to natural surroundings. These boxes can hold flyers with the important data pertaining to the specifics of the home and the realtor/owner handling the listing. When all the details are completed, the Marketing Committee and ECC will inform the community to the guidelines (type, size, placement, availability or how to obtain). 7

8 Having a complementary and uniform way of advertising homes that are available will enable realtors, home owners and prospective buyers to show/see homes for sale in Alpine Lake yet maintain our beautiful, natural setting. The board has asked the committee to concentrate on events and activities within our community this coming year. In analyzing any information made available about past events, we continue to suggest ways to improve them and find some new interests to promote. Your ideas are always encouraged. Alpine Lake has so many opportunities to "Live Your Dreams" no matter what your interests are. Golfing, fishing, boating, hiking, swimming, tennis, bocce, miniature golf, and much, much more! Or just sit back, relax and take in all of the natural beauty of Alpine Lake s four seasons as the view changes from day-to-day. All right here at our doorsteps! FROM MANAGEMENT & STAFF GENERAL MANAGER S CORNER by Linette Sines, Interim General Manager I would like to start by saying that I am honored to be chosen as the Interim General Manager. The past week and a half have been a blur! I am asking for everyone's patience as I try to fill the shoes of the Business Manager as well as the General Manager. With all of the new projects going on, and winter around the corner, my main goal is making sure that deadlines are being met so projects are not delayed. I am also working to improve communication between the GM and staff as well as the Property Owners. I am thankful for the support and encouragement that I am getting from many Property Owners and am looking forward to devising a plan to help Alpine Lake become a place for everyone (both guests and owners) to "Live Their Dreams." I am pleased to announce that Tammy Heavner will begin her employment here at Alpine as the Business Manager on October 26th. Tammy worked with us over the summer as our Human Resources Director and also has a background in various accounting work. Due to the reduction of business during the fall months, the Evergreene Dining Room will now only be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 4pm - 9pm. The Laker's Lounge will be open daily from 11am - 10pm. Also, don't forget to mark your calendar for the annual Halloween Party to benefit the Ali Ghan Shriner's! DJ Mark Falkenstein will be rocking the Evergreene Room on October 31st from 8pm - 11pm, so start planning your costumes! Admission is $10.00/person and $15.00/couple. Coming soon to the Gift Shop: Alpine Lake license plates! The new plates will feature our logo and our "Live Your Dreams" tagline. 9 SECURITY by Fuzzy Corum, Director of Security The Alpine Lake Resort sign at the main entrance has been installed. We have installed a game camera at the boat yard. Remember to call security when you have guests coming to your residence. Try to obey all speed limit signs. Officer Wayne Judy is still under doctor s care and is doing well! MARKETING by Craig Mason, Interim Marketing Coordinator & Group Sales I have been in the position now for 2 weeks...wow is all I can say! I look forward to continuing to market Alpine Lake Resort and the many benefits of living, working, and visiting here. Even though there have been some changes over the past two weeks, I have seen some of the best teamwork in all departments! We recently hosted the Mountain State Council of the Blind which turned out to be a huge success. I look forward to working with them in the future! Please be advised of the new hours, they have been posted online and around the property. My office has been relocated and I am no longer in the basement. If you need me, just ask the front desk. Right now I am focusing on all the upcoming events and more bookings. Please help us welcome the Country Quilters group on the 23 rd and I hope to see all of you at our Halloween Party on the 31 st. I feel blessed to be in such a position at Alpine and if I can be of any assistance to you, please don t hesitate. Restaurant and Laker Lounge News: You've spoke and we have heard!!! All Mountaineer games in the lounge we will continue to run the $2 draft special and other various game day specials! So make sure you come up and support your team, and the lovely staff serving you! On weekdays if the lounge is slow the closing time will be 9:00 PM, but if business is present the hours can always be flexible. As always we welcome your business and look forward to seeing you. ALPOA BOARD NEWS PRESIDENT S REPORT by Ginger Tucker, President Change is all around us. As the leaves change in multi-colored hues so too we must change and adapt to new management. The contract between ALPOA and Freddie Harrison stated that his services could be terminated with or without cause, provided he was given 30 days notice. On Sunday, October 4 th, representatives of the board provided Freddie with that notice. That decision was made after a discussion at a meeting attended by all board members. At the time of his termination notice, Freddie was offered another position at Alpine. He rejected that offer. Based on legal counsel advice and board policy the board members will not discuss personnel matters. Please welcome and support Linette Sines as our Interim GM. Linette was offered the position with a one year contract ending on September 30, The board is also looking for property owners who would be willing to work on developing an Alpine Lake Strategic Plan. Strategic planning is a process to develop a blueprint for achievement of its overall long-term organizational goals. We have essentially two aspects that exist at Alpine Lake, the business side and the Homeowner Association and we need to envision a plan for the Alpine Lake of the next 10 or 20 years. Liz Collins has researched the strategic plan process and we are now looking for property owners who would like to help draft a plan that we can 9

10 refine over the coming months. The plan will then be submitted for all property owners to review at our annual meeting. Additionally, the board will use the addresses supplied in the Alpine Lake Phone Directory to send blasts on topics of interest to all property owners. If you have not included an address in the phone book but would like to receive these s please submit your address to Craig Mason, our Interim Marketing Coordinator. On the other hand, if you do not want to receive s, please request that we withdraw your address. The board has received a draft restaurant lease agreement from CGC LLC (Duane & Liz Collins and Nancy Glotfelty) and have entered into negotiations. No decisions have been made at this time. The board received 4 property owner resumes for the open board seat: Andy Knapp, Tony Amato, Fred Isennock and Pat Arnone. The board selected Pat Arnone to fill the 8 remaining months of the vacated board seat. Please welcome Pat and thank her for serving. Just a reminder that the owner frequent visitor cards are available by contacting Linette Sines,as we will only issue 4 cards per owner. These will have a one year expiration date which will follow Alpine Lake s fiscal year (meaning the same as your vehicle sticker) and have your visitor s name and your name as the host. These will be maintained in our property management database.
