The good news is that you are the pilot. Ben Willis Thoughts, Prayers & Thank You Messages This section of FWIW is one of the best loved because it gives us an opportunity to keep up with our neighbors and friends by reporting good news as well as offering support when folks are going through difficult times. Thank you. Bill Felix: All is finally going well and Bill is much better. As of May 10 their plans are to leave CA on Thursday, May 23, arriving at Alpine on the 27th. The doctor feels Bill will be fine traveling as long as they stop every two hours and he walks for a few minutes each time. They look forward to returning to Alpine and thank everyone for all of your cards and prayers. Skip Keppler: Longtime resident Skip Keppler had a mild heart attack on May 9th. He is with his daughter Diane, an RN, in Pittsburg. He is scheduled to consult with a Cardiologist. He said he's feeling fine and from our conversation, his spirits are high. Please remember him in your thoughts and prayers. Submitted by Dick Ednock For anyone else dealing with health issues, family losses and other various challenges, we extend good wishes, and ask you to please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Let us know if they would like to be remembered in this section of FWIW. 1

3 Resolve to change the setting of assessment rate from the 1st of February to the third Saturday in March (Board Meeting date) to allow for better co-ordination with the budget process. Currently the assessment rate is set prior to the final budget process creating difficulties in planning. Changing the date of setting would allow for better matching of assessments with the budget. ALPOA BYLAWS Section 16. BOARD OF DIRECTORS: POWERS AND DUTIES (Current version with changes area strike through) (b) Duties: The duties of the Board include but are not limited to, the fixing of the annual charge to be made against each member pursuant to the Articles of Incorporation and the restrictive covenants of the Subdivision. The Board shall fix the charges on or before the third Saturday in March. GAME NIGHTS are held at the Boathouse every Wednesday night, beginning at 7 PM. Everyone is welcome come and bring your guests and friends. Cards & dominoes are popular, but other ideas are welcome. JAM SESSIONS Wednesdays - 6:00 PM Rhododendron Room We continue meeting each week to play together guitar, banjo, autoharp, harmonica, keyboard whatever your instrument of choice is. It s a fun way to learn from each other and we welcome anyone who would like to join us. Note: We will continue these sessions on Wed. evenings, even after Open Mic begins Open Mic Thursdays- 6:00PM- Ron Rogers I m really pleased that we ll start our second season of open mic on May 23, 2013, exactly one year from our first try. This year we will hold it on Thursdays at 6:00, not Wednesdays, so we won t compete with Game Night. For those who may not be familiar with Open Mic or be confused with a Jam, I ll try to clarify. In a Jam, everyone gets up on the stage to play each song. But with an Open Mic, the individual (or duo, trio, choir) has the stage to him/herself. Others join in BY INVITATION ONLY. This format gives people the opportunity to play before an audience without having to find material that everyone knows. So, new players get their feet wet, singer song writers get to have their songs heard, and pros get to try out material and to network. Our Open Mic is acoustic instruments only and each sign up gets four songs (or twenty minutes). Time permitting, we sometimes go around again. My job as 3
4 host is to open, TRY to keep things moving, fill in time gaps, and close the evening. If you have never been to our Open Mic give it a try. Those who attended know how much fun it is. Hope to see you. KCB BRIDGE NEWS from Allan Melmed The Wednesday Afternoon Bridge group resumed play on Wed., April 17 th, at the lodge. All levels of bridge ability are welcome; please feel free to join us. Call Allan Melmed at (304) Next Date: Wed.29 May. Note: We meet every other Wed. for fun bridge from about 1:00-3:30 PM. AMERICAN MAH JONGG from Katherine Bennington The newly formed Mah Jongg group will meet at the Boathouse on Wednesdays at noon starting on June 12 th. Mah Jongg is much like the card game Gin Rummy. We have a small group of interested players so please feel free to join us to play, learn or just watch. And, bring your friends from Alpine or neighboring communities. We will start off with a demo to familiarize everyone with the suits, traditions, rules and scoring. Join us for the Charleston, listening to the clacking sparrows, engaging in defensive play and groaning and laughing a lot. I have a basic tutorial I can you...contact me at khbennington@yahoo.com.. Alpine Learning Program Looking for WV Authors This year West Virginia celebrates its 150th year of statehood. It is a state with a unique story and a rich cultural heritage. The Alpine Learning Program would like to honor authors, that special group of people who contribute to our heritage by recording our many stories, with an ALP program highlighting this writing. If you know an author that has written about any aspect of West Virginia or one that has lived here and published a book, please share the information. Contact Nancy Reger at or dnreger@gmail.com or Teddi Cox at or gtcox67@frontier.com. If you would like to volunteer to assist during the event, please alpinelak @yahoo.com or call ext PROPERTY OWNER ACCOUNTS NEWS by Linette Sines, Business Manager Auto and Boat stickers are being distributed as quickly as possible. Please be patient, as this process is taking more time than in the past due to several factors. Unlike past years, all auto and boat information is being entered directly into our Property Owner software. This will save time in future years, requiring only new vehicle information to be submitted and logged. Unlike the past, where assessment money came rolling in over a period of a few months to a few weeks, this year, the bulk of our payments have arrived in a matter of days. These factors, in addition to working with our accountant to close our books for fiscal year 2012/13 have definitely kept me on my toes! My goal is to have all stickers distributed by the end of the month. Absentee ballots will begin being mailed out sometime between May 15th and May 20th. Remember, if you wish to obtain and absentee ballot, just call my office at ext 151, or drop me an at linettesines@alpinelake.com. 7

She has worked as a commissioned portrait painter, guided tours at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and was a mechanical drafter for the Campbell Soup Company. The artwork in this show is a return to her first love of visual art inspired by the influence of nature. The exhibit is a combination of her highly detailed colored pencil florals and her mandalas. Joyce can be reached at joyceann.wachter@gmail.com or PROPERTY OWNERS COMMITTEE Bernie & Birgit Stock, Co-Chairs The Kentucky Derby Party held at the Boathouse on Sat. May 5th was a success. Around 60 PO's and guests enjoyed great food and beverages along with the four Alpine Races and the Run for the Roses. Winners walked away with more than $ 800, while the losers walked away with smiles of a good time. The POC raised more than $1000 after expenses to be used for Boathouse improvements. Prizes for best hat were Sue Aamodt and Darrell Shaffer; best outfit: Liz and Bob Kertesz : and best of show:birgit Stock. Thanks to all who helped make this event a successful fundraiser by volunteering and participating. Although PRIDE DAY was a washout in many respects the Boathouse was full of activity. The kitchen was cleaned well and put into order while the main room was being cleaned and painted. We'll be finishing up in the coming weeks with new carpet, roof repair and sprucing up for the summer months. Help is always welcome... The Alpine Lake Annual Mountaineer Carry-In Picnic will take place on Saturday, May 25 at the Boathouse starting at 12 NOON. Bring a covered dish, salad or dessert to share as well as your own grilling meat, beverage and set-up. This is the start of our summer season (MEMORIAL 12
13 DAY WEEKEND). Hopefully the day will be warm and sunny filled with good food, music, games, fishing, tennis, etc. for the PO's and their guests. The annual YARD SALE takes place at Alpine the 1st Saturday in August. Start saving nice things to donate. Remember the rule: If you haven't used it for two or more years, let someone else put it to use (or store it!!!) Aluminum Cans are again being collected behind the golf cart parking lot. Save yours in a grocery bag and drop them off. The POC makes $200+ each year when they are sold. THINK GREEN. More COMMITTEE NEWS ECC COMMITTEE John Laing, Chair Although limited deer fencing has been approved to shield plants from our deer population, the most effective action is to plant deer resistant flowers. The problem is that the deer do not read the labels, and no flower is deer proof. The deer near our house do not eat dandelions, daffodils, or black-eyed susans. If some of you have found other plants that the local deer generally leave alone, it would be a community service to provide the identity of these plants and, if available, a source for them, to FWIW. It has been suggested that the ECC extend the period for tree cutting without a permit beyond June 1. If any of you feel you need this extension please contact the ECC so that we can get a sense of how many owners need more time. Neighborhood Watch Committee, Bruce Lohr, Chair As you may or may not know Terri and I split time between Alpine and central Maryland. This is the time of year that we see alot of fraud schemes and scams. Along with the "bargain home repair scams" here are two cons that were recently being perpetrated in Maryland. Scam and con artists often move around so please be wary of phone calls from unknown persons. The first scam was a male subject calling a woman and claiming he had been in an accident with the woman's brother, he even knew the brother's correct name. The caller claimed he had the woman's brother at gun point and would shoot him if she did not Western Union a money order to a woman named Linda. Of course, none of this was true. Please don't fall for this scam, if someone tries this on you call the police and report it. The second scam is one of the oldest around. A person is called and told they won a very valuable prize, inthis case it was 2.5 million dollars and a Mercedes Benz. All the winner had to do was send a Western Union money order to the subject for $ to cover administrative fees. Of course there is no car or cash prize. Never send money to anyone who claims you have won a prize. Call the police and report the scam attempt. The bottom line: If a deal sounds to good to be true it probably is!!! Stay Safe Folks!!! 13
