1 November 2013 Volume 14, Issue 11 Page of 20 December Deadline: November 18 The Village of Port Alice RUMBLE SHEET Lest We Forget Remembrance Day November 11 In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. -Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae Remembrance Day Parade November 11 Parade leaves Community Centre at approximately 10:50am, marching to cenotaph for ceremony. Members, please muster at 10:30. Public is welcome to walk in parade.

3 Page 3 of 20 Residents throw money away at the Port Alice Municipal Transfer Station The Village of Port Alice has done the math and based on recent charges, it will cost taxpayers an extra $20,000 annually to transfer garbage to the Seven Mile Landfill and Recycling. Why? Our garbage is contaminated with recyclable products. The Village was recently charged over $800 in fines for a blue bin which contained cardboard. Port Alice delivers 24 bins annually, and if each contains even a minimal amount of recyclable material, it will add more than $20, 000 to the cost of waste disposal and a possible tax increase of $49 per household. The Village reminds all residents to please separate recyclable materials and do not dispose of them with general waste. Recyclable materials that cannot be mixed with household waste include: Cardboard Plastics Metals Paint cans Fluorescent lights Electronics Appliances Batteries Commercial or construction waste Drywall Flammable or liquid waste MUNICIPAL TRANSFER STATION Open to Port Alice Residents Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. (EXTENDED TO 6:00 PM TUESDAYS) Saturdays 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Sundays NOON - 6 p.m. Please drop off your paper for recycling at the inside depot during operating hours. Off Road Lamps DriveSmartBC There is little doubt in my mind that one of the most popular add-on accessories for vehicles is some type of light. I was asked recently to comment by a visitor to the DriveSmartBC web site who said that he had noticed rectangular LED light bars in the bumpers and on the roofs of trucks and SUVs. While it is possible that some of these lamps are legal for use on the highway, many are not. The question is, how do you tell? In general, lights that comply with requirements are marked by the manufacturer to show that fact. North American equipment bears SAE or DOT codes, European lamps with E codes and Japanese lights with JIS/ JASIC codes. Each has a particular marking that shows device function such as SAE Y or E HR for an auxiliary driving light. A lack of these markings should raise a red flag. Unfortunately, it is common to find counterfeit markings on aftermarket lamps, particularly those purchased from outside of Canada on ebay. LED lights are slowly gaining acceptance for on highway applications and no doubt will be present in all applications in future. For now, if you cannot find a similar LED lamp that is original equipment on a vehicle manufactured in North America be suspicious that the approval markings are bogus. If the lamps do not show any approval markings or words similar to "check with local authorities before using on the highway" are present on the packaging it is highly probable that these lights are not legal for use. All non-approved lamps installed on your vehicle are considered to be "off road lamps" and must be covered with an opaque cover when the vehicle is being driven on the highway. The author is a retired constable with many years of traffic law enforcement experience. To comment or learn more, please visit -- Cst. Tim Schewe (Rtd.) DriveSmartBC

During October there have been rumours of cougars in town, however, only one call was made to the BC Conservation to report a cougar sighting. Without official reports, the Conservation Officer will not come to town to track the cougar. It is imperative that anyone who sees a cougar in town call the BC Conservation IMMEDIATELY to report when and where it was seen. Calls should be made by the person who saw it, not a third party. Please CALL It is also helpful to let the local RCMP ( ) know if you ve seen a cougar, and the Port Alice Municipal Office ( ), so we can inform the public. Visit the BC Conservation Service Information Booth at the Christmas Creations Craft Fair November 13 th at the Port Alice Community Centre The conservation officer will be there to answer all your questions and concerns about wildlife in the north island, wildlife reporting and more.
