These items must be taken to the Municipal Transfer Station. * * * PORT ALICE RECYCLING SOCIETY Celebrating Service to the Community since Be Bear Aware Use the following tips to help keep bears away: Garbage & Compost: Keep garbage in a secured shed or indoors until pick-up day. Fruit Trees: Pick fruit as it ripens and clean up windfalls promptly. Get rid of any unwanted fruit trees. Barbecues: Burn grills clean to remove any food residues and store barbecues inside. If left outside, keep it covered and store out of the wind. Pets: A dog may warn you that a bear is nearby, but be sure your dog is restrained or in a fenced yard. If you see a bear: Remain calm. The bear is likely passing through and will move on if it doesn t find food. Keep away from the bear and warn others to stay away. Bring children and pets indoors. 4 Municipal Office News Look for your Port Alice Utility Bill in the mail in early October. Utility Bill payments are due by November 30th, 2016 to prevent late charges. Village of Port Alice If you see a cougar in town, call the BC Conservation Authority IMMEDIATELY to report when and where it was seen. Please CALL Calls should be made by the person who saw it, not a third party. It is also helpful to let the local RCMP ( ) know, and the Port Alice Municipal Office at , so we can inform the public. The Port Alice Wood Stove Exchange Program is designed to encourage residents to exchange their old, inefficient, non-epa certified wood burning appliances for new EPA-certified wood burning stoves and inserts, and other qualifying appliances including gas, pellet and electric. (Some exceptions apply). Port Alice residents who exchange their old wood-burning appliance for one qualified under the Program, are eligible to receive a $250 rebate, providing that the old stove will be decommissioned and recycled. 5 Municipal Office News SIGN UP AND BE A PART OF THE GREAT BC SHAKE OUT On October 20 at 10:20 a.m., millions of people worldwide will Drop, Cover and Hold On during Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills. DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO IN AN EARTHQUAKE Where will you be? Fire Prevention Week October 9-15th, 2016 Thank you to our Volunteer Fire Department: Greg Beatty, Wayne Beckett, Rod Bedford, Tyler Boese, Maria Farrell, Chandra Hovde, Roald Hovde, Amanda Jorgenson, Chris Jorgenson, Steve Masters, Don Rethmeier, Joseph Rethmeier, Natasha Rethmeier, Rebecca Rethmeier, Gerry Rose, Matt Rydalch, Daryl Schopp, and Sean Watson. Stop in at the Village Office before October 14 th, 2016 and add your name to the list of participants who will be taking a moment to Drop, Cover and Hold On. Always good to be prepared. DROP down onto your hands and knees (before the earthquake knocks you down). This position protects you from falling but allows you to still move if necessary. COVER your head and neck with both arms, clasping your neck with your hands. If a sturdy desk or table is nearby, crawl beneath it while keeping one arm over your head. (If there is no shelter nearby, only then should you get down near an interior wall, corner (or next to low-lying furniture that won't fall on you), and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.) Do not try to run to another room just to get under a table. HOLD ON to your shelter (or to your head and neck) until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if the shaking shifts it around.
