2 Municipal Office News Sidewalk & Footbridge Winter Maintenance Policy Winter Season During the winter season, please be aware that the Village of Port Alice does not remove snow and/or ice from the public sidewalks in the village. When the sidewalks and/or footbridges are covered with snow and/or ice they are very slippery. Please use extreme caution when walking on them. Under the policy the Public Works Crew is directed to clear the footbridges only, and only after the major roads and streets have been cleared. We regret this inconvenience brought on by forces of nature, and remind you to use extreme caution when using the sidewalks and footbridges during the winter, and that you are doing so at your own risk. This notice is published in accordance with Village of Port Alice Sidewalk & Footbridge Maintenance Policy Code No. 4.3.b. Winter Road Conditions The Village of Port Alice would like to remind residents that winter road conditions will quickly be upon us. On the North Island that can mean: heavy rain, leaves and road debris, snow, slush, black ice, and reduced visibility. Please ensure that your vehicle is winter-ready with good tires by October 1, Take your time, expect the unexpected, and arrive safely! Village Council Meetings Council Meetings are held the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month in the Village Council Chambers at 7:00 pm. If there is an issue or concern that you wish to address Council about, you may request delegate status by submitting a signed letter of request by 5:00 pm on the Thursday prior to the next meeting. 9 An Act of Remembrance Community Messages News from Sea View School Merry Christmas! School will be in session until Friday, December 23 rd and classes will resume again on Tuesday January 10 In a week of tropical storms, the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 10 th, provided a sunny reprieve for a group of Sea View students to go for a walk. Our destination was the Legion, where the children sowed poppy seeds in the garden beds as an act of Remembrance. The Flanders Fields poppies will hopefully bloom in the summer, and be yet another reminder of the sacrifices made for the freedoms and peace we enjoy. Sea View School entered a contest by collecting used household batteries to recycle. We haven t heard the results yet, but would like to say thank you to our community for supporting us in our quest to collect as many batteries as we could in the time allotted! A second part of the contest challenged students to create an art form out of some of the batteries collected. Christmas Coffeehouse: December events will include our annual Christmas Coffeehouse on Wed., Dec. 14, beginning at 7 p.m. The children are busy rehearsing, and creating props and costumes in anticipation of this special time it is our gift to the community, and we hope you will be able to join us. Refreshments will be available for a donation, with all proceeds going towards the Grade 7 field trip to Vancouver. Please contact Natalie Stewart at: or nstewart@sd85.bc.ca Thank you to the many people who have supported Sea View s fundraising efforts this fall every bit of support makes a difference in what we are able to offer for rich learning experiences at school and on field trips. In February, Sea View students in Grades 2 to 7 will be going to Mt. Cain for a day of snowboarding and skiing lessons, and in June, our Grade 7 students will be joining their peers from Sunset School (in Port McNeill) for a multi-day trip to Vancouver.
