17 Community Messages News from Sea View School Principal s Message February is Heritage Month, and on Thursday, February 25 th, Sea View School will be hosting its first School-Community Heritage Fair, and EVERYONE is invited to participate in this celebration of family and community culture and history. In preparation for the big event, each student is currently working at school, and at home with family members, to choose an interesting topic, to ask questions, collect information, and then create a display featuring one aspect of family, community, or Canadian heritage. Students will display their projects, and also be available to discuss their learning, from in the Community Centre Gym. A Community Heritage Potluck lunch will take place in the Larry Pepper Room from 12 until 1 (Please bring a favourite dish to share!) and from 1-2pm, students and guests will have opportunities to engage in a variety of cultural and historical activities. We are hoping many of these experiences will be provided by community members. For example, Mrs. Prescott has volunteered to help students make butter in an old-fashioned butter churn. (Thank you, Carol.) Do you have a song, craft, piece of clothing, or tool from your own heritage something hands-on, or that we can enjoy watching and hearing about from you? I am excited to see what treasures will emerge from the attics of Port Alice! You are also invited to come in historical and/or cultural dress. If you would like to create a display and/or the opportunity for others to engage in a hands-on activity, please notify the school, and we will make sure there is a place for you to set up. Thank you for bringing culture and heritage to life for our students! 18 Community Health Mount Waddington Hospice Support Services Improving the quality of life for those who are living with or dying from an illness has been the definition of what hospice services provide since 1975 when the movement arrived in Canada. North Island Crisis & Counselling Centre Society is pleased to announce that Mount Waddington Hospice Support Services are available in many local communities. Hospice supports are provided by volunteers who have received specialized training and completed criminal records checks. Currently, hospice support services are available in community for Port McNeill and Port Hardy residents. In the fall, hospice supports will be available in Island Health facilities in those communities and Eagle Ridge Manor. The goal of our hospice support program is to provide comfort, peace, dignity and compassion for North Island residents and their families. Volunteers are able to provide support by offering companionship and resources, providing respite for families, and by sitting vigil at the bedside of loved one. If you or someone you care about are interested in hospice supports, please contact the Hospice Support Program at North Island Crisis & Counselling Centre Society for more information by calling: (250) or by ing: You can also stop in and pick up one of our pamphlets at the Crisis Centre or at any Island Health facility.
