Bring the feeling of summer indoors with this easy DIY Hammock chair! Supplies: 1 1/4 x 3 oak dowel (oak is a hard wood and considered safer than poplar for supporting weight.) -3/8 x 16 braided polypropylene (get this by the foot) -2 yards of plain canvas 80mm stainless steel spring snap link (holds up to 220 lbs) 3/16 stainless steel quick link (holds up to 660 lbs) black fabric paint (acrylic paint is fabric friendly) -paint brush Tools: -drill and 3/8 drill bit -sewing machine -iron and ironing board -shears -ruler -lighter Instructions Step One: Fold your two yards of canvas in half and lay flat with the fold on the left. Measure in about 7 from the top right edge and mark. I cut mine about 12 in, and it was a bit too much, so I m suggesting 7. Using a yard stick or ruler, draw a line from that top mark to the bottom right corner, and cut through both pieces. Open your canvas. Step Two: Fold your top edge down ½ and iron flat. Then fold it in again ½ and iron flat. Pin and stitch the bottom of the fold as shown above. Repeat with the long bottom edge. Step Three: Flip your canvas 90 degrees to the left so that the longest edge is on the right. You re going to create pockets for the rope to slide through on each side. Fold each corner in about 1 ½ and iron flat. Then fold the unhemmed top edge in ½ and iron flat. Step Four: Fold again 1 ½ and iron flat. Step Five: Stitch two lines along the bottom folded edge as shown. Reinforce your beginning and ending with back stitches. Repeat with other side. Step Six: Make a mark 2 and 4 in from both ends of your dowel, and drill through. Sand your rough edges and stain if you d like. I chose to leave mine natural. 6 The Villages Green Corner 12 tips for throwing an eco-friendly birthday party Throwing a green birthday party may seem an impossible task, but in fact, there are plenty of ecofriendly choices you can make. The following tips will be your guide to throwing the best green birthday party ever: 1. Buy Fresh Instead of Packaged One of the biggest sources of waste at birthday parties is food, and this is where you can be eco-friendly. Buying fresh ingredients instead of packaged foods can be a great way to cut down on waste. For example, instead of buying frozen vegetables or meat, go to your local farmer s market and purchase everything fresh. Such ingredients may be more time-consuming to prepare, but they are eco-friendly and more nutritious than their frozen counterparts. 2. Use Environmental Friendly Decorations Instead of hanging streamers, banners and balloons, make the decorations from your own recyclable or reusable materials at home. Party hats and banners can be made using old cardboard, construction paper or even with pretty ends of cloth. Get creative with your decorations and allow your guests to help by colouring their own party hats. 3. Avoid Using Disposables Paper plates and plastic cutlery and cups can be very wasteful because they only allow for a single use. Such disposable items can be replaced with reusable plastic plates, cutlery, and cups. These can be repeatedly washed and saved for the next party. If plastic does not suit your needs, buy plates, cups, and cutlery made from bamboo. 4. Eliminate the Goody Bag Concept For a child s birthday party, goody bags require a lot of wasteful materials including candy wrapped in useless plastic and cheap toys that children do not like. The goody bag itself is made of plastic and will be thrown away, once the child finishes taking out the contents of the bag. A better alternative would be to use a paper or cloth bag and filling it with useful items like notepads, chalk, pens, jigsaw puzzles, and so on. Other interesting eco-friendly party favours include a packet of plant seeds or a flower bulb wrapped in cloth. 5. Make a Separate Trash Basket for Recyclables Any green birthday would be incomplete without a separate trash basket for recyclable items. You can go a step ahead and make separate baskets for glass, paper, plastic, and metal. Your guests will gladly help you with sorting the trash whenever they need to throw something away.
