1 City of Highland Weekly Report September 01, 2017 J oin us to install smoke alarms in your community! The Red Cross has teamed up with the City of Highland and Cal Fire to offer Highland residents smoke alarms. When: Saturday, October 14, 2017 Location: Highland Fire Station # Sterling Avenue San Bernardino, CA Time: 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We need your help we need to have at least volunteers help out in order to make this program successful!!! Volunteers will be grouped together to go door-to-door to ask residents if they would like smoke alarms, install smoke alarms, offer fire safety and preparedness information and help residents create home evacuation plans! Please sign up to help out on this day. Groups are encouraged to sign up together. Each group will include four people: three volunteers and one Red Cross volunteer. Each group member will be assigned to one of the following duties: Installer: Test and install smoke alarms (must be over 18 years of age) Educator: Review literature and assist the resident with a home fire escape plan (bilingual a plus) Documenter: Record and report smoke alarms installed, resident paperwork Safety: Group contact, keep in communication with event captain (may require use of personal cell phone) Please contact Volunteer Services for more information and to sign up at ext City of Highland ~ Base Line Highland, CA ~ ~

3 P a g e 3 California s Free Mattress Recycling Program The polyurethane foam, steel springs and wood frames from Californians used mattresses will soon become the material for carpet padding, landscaping mulch and new bedding. Under a state program that took effect in January of 2016, California residents are now able to drop off their old mattresses and box springs at participating collection sites (3 closest sites listed below) for free. Funded through a fee on mattress and box spring purchases, the program aims to divert that bulky waste from landfills to recycling facilities that can turn it into other useful products. The Fee & Where to Recycle The fee collected per unit in California, as approved by the state, is $11. This fee applies to every mattress and box spring sold as of December 30, Residents can drop off their old mattress at nocost at a participating collection site or recycling facility. The $3 reimbursement per mattress is only given at our participating recycling facilities. It is limited to five units per person per day. Did you buy a new mattress? Free mattress pickup may be provided by your retailer. California s law also requires retailers that are delivering new mattresses to offer consumers the option to have a used mattress picked up at the time of delivery, at no additional cost. However, mattresses bought from online companies are not subject to this provision and retailers can refuse to take back a used mattress if it poses a health or safety risk. 4 P a g e 4 Administration Emergency Preparedness - BUILD A KIT Having a well-stocked disaster supply kit on hand before a disaster strikes will make anyone s life easier. A disaster may cause everyday necessities like food and clean water to become scarce and hard to come by. You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least three days. A week is preferable. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours or it might take days. A well-stocked disaster supply kit should have the following items: Water one gallon of water per person, per day Food Canned goods, MRE s, freeze dried. Also include at least one manual can opener Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Flashlights and extra batteries First aid kit Sanitation Items - Moist towelettes, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, garbage bags and plastic ties, soap/detergent and bleach Basic tools wrench, pliers, screw drivers, shovel, duct tape, etc. Cash and change A change of clothes, sturdy shoes, and rain protection for each person A sleeping bag and/or extra blankets Other supplies Cups, plates, bowls, utensils, foil Extra batteries Plastic sheeting Copies of important documents (Driver s license, passport, birth certificate, etc.) Fire extinguisher Lighters and/or matches Extra medication Cash and credit cards These are just the basics. Everyone s kit will be different because everyone has different needs. If you have an infant, then extra bottles, formula, and diapers would be necessary. Don t forget about your pets. They ll need food and water as well. Remember that a disaster can strike at any time, but the time to get prepared is now. For more information on assembling your disaster supply kit, please visit

Although the City of Highland does not enforce street sweeping parking restrictions, we appreciate your assistance in keeping the streets clear on your scheduled day. Parked vehicles cause the operator to swing wide to miss them. Moving vehicles off a street scheduled for sweeping allows crews to thoroughly clean the street from curb-to-curb. One parked car equals nearly three car lengths of space that can t be swept because the street sweeping equipment must leave room to avoid it. This can result in debris building up on the roadway and entering the storm drain which can cause flooding during heavy rains and contribute to water pollution. 2) In residential areas the street sweeper can sweep anytime from 7am to 5pm, the day after your solid waste collection day. 3) If solid waste collection is delayed one day due to a holiday, the street sweeper will be delayed one day as well. 4) Since sweeping is done as close to the curb as possible, things like overhanging tree branches, basketball hoops and solid waste collection carts can hinder the cleaning effectiveness. 5) Street sweeping also serves as one of our Best Management Practices (BMP) to control and improve water quality. This BMP helps us maintain compliance with the State-mandated Stormwater Program requirements!
