3 PRESIDENTS PRATTLE Hi everyone, one month since you gave me the chance to drive. (The club that is). It has been hectic for us all, learning new and wonderful ways and picking up from Big Dick Penhall, and his left hand man Mike Osborne. We have had a Committee meeting and a look at future events and the s just keep rolling along. Our Event Coordinator, the intrepid Bronte would like new places to go. If you have been to an event or place with another of your groups and found it interesting please let Bronte know. As we don t all live identical lives, that should assist make the year an eventful one. As the weather has been cold and miserable more people stay indoors and then we run the risk of picking up infections. For those of us that are not well or running as smoothly as a good Swiss Watch, we wish you well and back on your feet ticking over smoothly. If you know of anybody who is unwell, and perhaps requires a friendly voice or hand feel free to represent the club or if you prefer ring and inform the committee and we will contact them on your behalf. Again thank you for the honour of being your President for the next 12 months. Yours in Service and Motoring TGL1 (The Good Looking One) Trevor Clerke FROM THE EDITOR 30th BIRTHDAY WISHES TO THE PORT AUGUSTA CLUB. As part of their celebrations, a sizable number of members went to the PADRC Clubrooms for a splendid lunch, having had a most enjoyable time at Andrew Todd s property nearby. They were treated to large morning tea, a collection of vehicles and a vast display of birds. Mary and I went along in the modern, as the weather over that weekend was very stormy and wet. We enjoyed catching up with members of both PADARC and PAVRC, especially Cec and Barb Scholar. They hosted an afternoon tea at their Stirling North home when the MAPS campout group went that way in Earlier in the week, we had enjoyed a run over to the Barossa Valley with friends from the Gawler club. Initially it was to be in the TR4, but a cold early start made the comfort of the Bristol a better choice! Attractions we visited were a wood carving workshop near Collingrove, lunch at the Tanunda club and a tour around Steiny s Metwurst unit nearby. Only hiccup was a puncture close to home. A tyre less that 2 years old was the casualty. The upside was that in under 6 days, a replacement came from the Vintage Tyre Supplies in the UK, having had no joy in locating one locally. While I spending my UK Pounds, I decided that if an exhaust was needed for the MGB, then a stainless one was the way to go. I have had great service from the MG Owners Club in Cambridge, England over a number of years. This time I ve bought a complete stainless system for less than some locally sourced mild steel ones, even after the carriage cost. I ordered it on the Thursday and it arrived in Ardrossan on the following Tuesday- amazing. Closer to home, a new windscreen has been fitted into the frame by Rod Nixon s CYP Crash. Yes, I fitted one to an earlier car, but a stressful job I chose not to repeat! Then I bought a jerry can of fuel and tried the tank and fuel system for leaks, filled the cooling system bought a new battery, fitted the new points free distributor and tried to start the car. This showed sticking float needles and a need to get the book out on how to time the ignition! Easy to get it 180 degrees out. - always read the book! With no exhaust on, I was a bit worried as to what noise it might make when it finally fired up. That last time I heard as much noise was when a 24 cylinder Spitfire motor was started up at the Port Adelaide Aircraft Museum! With the new exhaust fitted and the ignition set by a strobe light, it was that much quieter and smoother. Apart from that, I have spent time on getting all the touring kits ready for different cars. You can bet if you carry it, it s just wasted effort. However, I now have a spare tube and a tyre for the Bristol on board, ready for the Chrysler National Rally. Finally, on a sad note I would not wish for the passing at just 59 years of one of the MAPS former members to go without comment. Jackie Briggs was a major player on the early days of MAPS, along with her parents, Ron and Lois. Jackie s time as Secretary was one of the most active and creative times with events such as the Swap Meets being worthy examples. I think that she wished to reward all members of the club, by way of the various trophies she instigated. Pictures of here with her Wolseley 4/44 and Valiant S show how active she was in a wide circle. Our thoughts go to Lois, Chris and to Jackie s wider family at this sad time.

4 100 YEARS OF MORRIS has seen the Morris and associated marques duly recognised by car enthusiasts worldwide. I came across a small photo of the Series E model that I restored just prior to moving to Australia. I found the car in need of restoration as it looked to have been driven into a lock up garage and left. A rebuilt motor, respray and rechrome was carried out. On moving to Australia, a new loving home was found and the car continues to be seen at various meetings of the local UK Morris Register. They don t have club nights! They have noggin and natters. We enjoyed our time with the members for the local group and I am pleased to say they we receive their Chiltern Chatter newsletters edited by Doug Townsend. Doug is a great Morris man and an expert of the bull nose models. Hence his car below which took part in the parade of vehicles marking the Queen s Jubilee. OTHER NUFFIELD SALOON CARS I LIKE for various reasons Wolseley 8- posh version of a Series E, with OHV unit. MG Y & YB saloon- like the Wolseley, based on the E bodyshell Riley RM series, preferably the 2.5 litre model MG Magnette ZA/ZB Varitone (60th birthday this year) ( Though this is really into the BMC era) Mike O

5 A WHALE OF A TIME, OR SHOULD IT BE THE TALE OF THE TWO BEARS? A MAPS/ CRCA sextet set off to see the whales at the Head of the Bight on Monday 6th August. Bob and Ellen Hayward from Woodville took the Pajero and their much admired Adelma caravan, Trevor and Jeanette Bean with their trusty Toyota and van, with the Osbornes in the Pajero and Avan. As we had agreed to meet at Pt. Augusta, we headed through Kadina as I was on a mission! Mary had seen two nice Teddy bears in a Kadina op shop the previous day, but as the shop was closed, MAPS member and DCCC Mayor, Paul Thomas agreed to release them from captivity and take them to his office. I bet the Country Times would have loved a picture! Bears collected from Paul and onwards to Pt. Augusta for the night. Coming back towards Ceduna, we called in at Penong, with its many windmills. The caravan park was spotless and there was a welcome for us. Penong is nice little community and well worth the stop. Then it was Streaky Bay for two nights where we bumped into MAPS members Leif and Viv Illman in their Coaster motor home. We had a day trip to Sceale Bay and Venus Bay, taking in the rock formations called Murphy s Haystacks en route Tuesday s run was the lengthy one to the Ceduna Tourist Parknice place and managers. Wednesday s run to Nullabor Roadhouse saw the change from the cropping land of the Ceduna area to the flat plains. Entry to see the whales from the viewing area was good value at $10 and whilst reports that there were over 100 whales offshore, we reckon the 20 to 30 we spotted were worth the trip. Due to quarantine controls, we were uncertain as to what items we could bring back via the Ceduna checkpoint, so we ate up well! However, we need not have bothered, as. Both the Streaky Bay Caravan Park and Hotels were excellent. A walk down the street and we took in the SB engine display. Heading towards Pt. Lincoln we camped for one night just north of the city on a property owned by vintage caravan enthusiasts, Mick and Di Hart. What great hospitality we enjoyed! Mick s collection of items includes planes and on the following fine morning, the three men took to the skies in a 1950 s Cessna 170 for a flight over the Pt. Lincoln area. As we felt the ladies needed some retail therapy, we called in the town. The ladies bought all manner of things, but I headed off to see Neville Owen at Lincoln Land Rover where I was very taken with a Defender 110. Tumby Bay was the night stop where Bob and I tried a different sort of horsepower- a ride on a horse drawn trolley around the town. Then it was Whyalla for two nights for the lucky Haywoods and Osbornes, but the Bean had to get home for an appointment. As we had extra time, we were able to meet up with some members of the Whyalla Vintage & Classic Car Club. Wow, did these people make us feel welcome and we look forward to seeing them on the forthcoming Federation run to Canberra. Homeward bound we called in at Pt. Germein, where the pub by the jetty now serves food. Overall, we covered 2900 km with fuel consumption 11 to 12 litres/100km. Our thanks to Trevor and Jeanette for the preparation work they carried out to make it all run so smoothly. I thought you said Head of the BITE!

7 POINTS FROM MINUTES OF MAITLAND AUTO PRESEVATION SOCIETY Held on Thursday 1st August 2013 at 8.00pm at the Chatt Centre Maitland Members Present: Business Arising: 45 members as per attendance register.apologies; 20 apologies as per the register. a/. Chatt Centre display. T.Clerke explained what we were allowed to do in promoting MAPS within the Chatt Centre, suggesting that we hang pictures in the space provided and changed periodically. b/. FHMC Representative. T.Clerke responded to an from B.Knope suggesting that we appoint a representative or appoint a proxy to FHMC. The fact that the meetings were held on Saturday nights was a deterrent and the club was reluctant to appoint a proxy. Correspondence: a/. Several brochures and other club newsletters were tabled. b/. s from B.Knope and G.Klingberg were presented. c/. Lease received from the solicitor. d/. Inneston Invitation. Moved by R.Dunns and seconded by B.Giesecke that the correspondence be received. Carried. Business Arising From Correspondence: a/. Inneston 100th : To be held on the 14th of September. Free park entrance to members displaying cars. Events on the day include guided walks; historic displays as stalls, food and drinks, music, dancing and a pageant. b/. G.Klingberg fund raiser: Graham spoke on his and Margaret s experience at raising funds by catering for a function, seeking a supermarket s assistance in low cost supplies and hopefully using them as a sponsor. Including a fun event and a different location each year adds variety. He tabled the letter he wrote to Foodland. He thoroughly recommended that MAPS look at this as an annual event on our calendar. Treasurers Report: Events Report: August; September; J.Correll presented and tabled her report then moved that it be accepted. Seconded by D.Penhall and carried. B.Giesecke highlighted the next two months events: Rex Fox Memorial Run Old Car Day Bethany General Meeting with a guest speaker talking on rocks and minerals. Morgan Weekend Day run to Lochiel Cruising Classics at Kulpara estimation of 40 attending. See your events calendar for a comprehensive list to consider participation. Handover Lunch; Moranne Coombes reported on the Handover Lunch suggesting that it was the first real handover MAPS has had in a long time. The meal was highly praised and the venue was excellent compared with a changeover lunch Moranne and Shirley Rose attended the week before. Dick actually handed over the keys to Trevor. Awards were presented to Ron Anderson the President s Trophy, the Patron s Trophy was presented to Lindon and Dawn Penney and the Participation Trophy was presented to Monica Smith. Lucky members won raffle prizes. Moranne suggested those who weren t there missed out on a great day as everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. General Business: Change to the constitution; the need for two people to be added to the committee is seen as a necessary change. Due process needs this change to be presented to a special general meeting. New By-law; Historic Registration the by-law reads -: members requiring historic registration for their vehicle/vehicles must be a financial member by June 30th of each year as per the conditional registration requirements of DPTI. ( Secretary s note; since then the club has received an suggesting that that by-law may not be necessary. Membership is deemed valid until the cut off date of August 14th and the DPTI acknowledges that conditional registration is valid until that date) [president s note; it will be held in obeyance pending clarification of information] ( Ed s note- Source of new information is Sporting Car Club of SA s newsletter.) Next meeting: Sept 5th with Guest speaker Mr Robert Wehr speaking on rocks and minerals. Meeting closed at 8.45pm. Trevor thanked all who attended.

8 EDITORIAL EXTRAS The need to add some extra pages has left some space to fill! What better way to feature two models of the Bentley range? First of all, a standard steel Mark 6 Bentley saloon, similar to the one owned by Paul Thomas. Then the later Mulsanne owned by Bernard and Barbara Knope. Have a look at this interesting web site. NA%20POCZ.html With Bronte having constructed the fine lectern for our speakers, I am going to propose that we get a hymn numbers board numbers on which the winning lucky squares are posted DEADLINE FOR ALL MAPS REVIEW COPY. No later than one week after the General Meeting please. NEWS JUST IN- I m going to suggest to Bronte that he tries this new mechanic to work on his Beetle. Our trip to Whyalla allowed us to see the rare DKW saloon of Paul and Jill Weidenbach. An advert for such a car is below.

9 INVITES TO THE DEEP SOUTH! I am writing to see if your group would be interested in participating in celebrations planned for the 100th anniversary since the Inneston gypsum mining lease was pegged within what is now Innes National Park. We have scheduled a date of Saturday 14th September 2013 to have an open day at Inneston and I am trying to organise some interesting displays, events and activities for participants, park visitors, past residents of the area and the wider community. We are hoping to have market stalls, food & drink, guided walks, presentations, historic displays, music, dancing and a pageant. Inneston gypsum mine operated from 1913 until 1930, but the township continued on into the 50's. I don't expect any of your vehicles would have direct links to Inneston itself, or maybe they do, but their presence would certainly add to the character of the day. I was imagining that some of your vehicles would make for a great display on-site as well as participate in the pageant itself. It think it will be a fantastic social outing, and give members who have not had the chance to look through Innes National Park or Inneston to come down and have a look at some of the historic buildings and the spectacular coastal scenery within the park. Participant will be offered free entry into the National Park for the day. Jasmine Swales. National Park Ranger EDITHBURGH GALA DAY The Edithburgh Gala Day, Show n Shine will be held on Sunday, 6th October The rules for the event will be the same as applied last year. A $10.00 fee will apply for the club entry and there will be no fee for individual club members unless they wish to enter into one of the judged categories. (see application form for judged categories). The fee for each member for each judged category will be $ For those who wish to participate as club members and just want to attend and enjoy the day and not have their vehicle judged there will be no fee as they will be covered by the club s entry. As occurred last year the club has been asked to provide two judges. Although entry will be accepted on the day, Club members are encouraged to lodge entry forms well in advance as this contributes to the smooth running of the event. An electronic copy of the entry form is attached. For those who are unable to access the form electronically I can provide a hard copy. At the September MAPS meeting a show of hands from those who intend to attend would be appreciated. This event has received excellent club patronage in the past and most attendees that I have spoken to find it an enjoyable casual day out. I look forward to seeing club members on the day. Regards Don McPhee INAUGARAL REX FOX RUN, AUGUST 4TH I cleaned my car again-it turned out to be all in vain Too bad about the mud and slush Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain. But then it cleared soon after I left Moonta for the Rex Fox memorial run.now there is a neat rhyming name Rex Fox! You would almost choose it for yourself. Like Redd Foxx the blues singer or Jamie Fox the actor.is it a synonym? 17 MAPS old cars met at the Maitland plaza and Arthurton Oval club rooms for a pleasant sheltered, cosy morning tea in their new clubrooms. Thanks to Kath Mason s influence we were able to go inside and feel the warm. Then on to Leon Hall s hillside log cabin at Ardrossan, where open courtyard log fires greeted us. Lunch was had inside on bench tables looking out at panoramic views of trees, green hills, blue sea and the village.don McPhee gave a thank you address to our gracious hosts Leon and Natalie Hall. Going home made me think what a wonderful life seeing this semi-arid region transformed into a lush and verdant landscape with hues of green in the trees, bushes, and crops.even the moss on the verge of the road was emerald. With the steely cold air on the outside and me on the inside where the heaters played on my feet. I thought- thank Christ I m not on a motorbike!.( sorry to blaspheme I could have saidthank God! ) Add to that all the dams full and sheets of water in the low lands of the paddocks which had enticed the ducks to fly south for the winter. Bronte. As you can see, it was all very relaxed, with the Harvey's (top). The Kleinberg's and Vic Brown keeping a bar watch!
