SOME OPENING WORDS FROM OUR NEW PRESIDENT, PETER ANDERSON 3 I was born at Minlaton in 1956, a 4th generation YP farmer, living on the farm until moving at a young age to the South-East with my father and sisters. The majority of my schooling occurred at Penola. Rather than return to the land, for some reason I decided to join the police. Moving to the city was a cultural shock for a farm boy, but I stuck out the training to spend the next 43 years as a police officer, moving from patrols, Criminal Investigation and policy development. The last 15 years of my working life were spent as a senior manager, retiring in 2017 as a Detective Superintendent in Charge of the Far North policing district. In 2016 I was awarded the Australian Policing Medal in the Queen's birthday honours list. I have several degrees, including a Master's degree in Public Policy and Administration. ( Bet his favourite singers are The Three Degrees! Ed.) I have a 25 year old daughter who is a lawyer in Adelaide. I am no longer married but am in a committed relationship with my partner Allison, who is also a club member. Allison will shortly be moving to join me at Moonta, so expect to see her at future club events. I now live in retirement on my hobby farm at Moonta. I enjoy fishing and golf, but sadly not very good at either. I have owned an assortment of cars and motorcycles over my life including a Mini, HG Holden, Toyota Corolla, BMW, Mitsubishi Pajero, and now a BT50. Recent additions include a Mercedes SLK230, a 1951 Daimler and a 1986 Bentley Mulsanne. As the newly appointed club president, I look forward to working with the committee and members to further enhance the fellowship we currently enjoy. Peter.

He used fiberglass for the body shells. MOVING TIMES FOR SOME MEMBERS Long time members David and Helen Croser are off to new pastures in Portland and we wish them well. Both have contributed to MAPS events by way of their musical and poetical talent. Now recognized for his outstanding talent as an artist, Bob Landt and wife Jenny headed off to cooler climes of the Fleurieu some weeks ago. Bob was a founder member of MAPS, along with the museum project in what is now the Heart of Maitland. Bob has a wealth of knowledge about the YP area and motoring and it was always good to sit down and listen to him. It was never dull. Keep in touch! Mike O

7 Well, the car may be called a Grey Lady, but the young lady passenger is not. Perhaps she s saying, For the sheer joy of driving I d like to go there in an Alvis (A quote from an advertisement in The Motor 1952)

8 WAURALTEE REGO DAY June 24th A very successful day at Wauraltee Hall with lots of members attending, not simply to pay subs, but also to enjoy the pooled lunch and excellent BBQ. MAPS regularly provides the meat for such occasions for free- all part of the bargain you get for $40 subscriptions per annum! Thanks to the MAPS chefs and to Leith and Vivienne Illman for setting up the great venue and providing the tea and coffee. It's a great venue for such occasions and MAPS is pleased to be able to support such a worthwhile venture. Todd Twelftree s 1961 Ford Fairlane The Wauraltee Registration Day was another success, continuing on from the Kulpara Day a month earlier. Being a warmer day, the socialising that was taking place outside amongst the members cars, and the bar-b-que, was evident, as well as in the hall. The enthusiasm and pride that is shown by both Leith and Vivienne Illman and the Wauraltee community is evident, particularly by the manner in which the hall and surrounds are maintained. There is much interesting reading and photos of the history of the district. I found the history of the Wauraltee School of particular interest, especially being able to read about it, then walk across the road to the school s site, find more information, and then to be able to imagine the experiences of the olden days. Just a point to remember, when you sign the attendance register for any event, write in the vehicle that you are driving to the event, not a vehicle that you have left home in the shed. And.. of course, don t forget to sign in. The Wilkins Mustang Leon & Natalie Hall s Land Rover Cheers, Richard Bastian Yarn time!

10 A BUSY MONTH OR SO IN THE EDITOR S HOUSEHOLD AND SHEDS! During the last couple of months, Mary, my wife, has been undergoing some work on her suspension and steering, or rather should I say excess toe in on the left front foot. With the insertion of steel pin, that are looks to be better, but just as with old cars, you fix one issue and another job comes along! Meanwhile, the gods decided to test my mettle with a number of vehicle challenges. The long term project of the Alvis Grey Lady has been making steady progress in Murphy s Crash Repairs, Kadina. Unfortunately the wood sections in the rear and roof were in poor condition, or had been affected by nearby welding. Faced with the choice of wood replacement, or a metal square tube section, I ve gone for the metal. I m impressed by how Brandon, the craftsman doing the job has worked things out. I d like to think that the car will be somewhere to being finished by 2019, but there are a lot of jobs still to be done. A tip on anyone looking to apply excellent ant rust paint coatings such as POR15.Unless ALL the old paint is removed and the rust treated, the coating will come with high pressure water jetting. On Alice the drophead Alvis, the job of a new headlining for the hood is underway at Trim Tech, Kadina, so I do not have to worry on that one, as Shannons are paying for the rodent damage. However, I did need the services of the UK trim suppliers, Woolies to provide the correct lining, a Melton woolen material which will also suit the Grey Lady interior. That left the Bristol s cloudy cooling system to be sorted. This job came about as the coolant seemed to have sediment in it, despite various flushing routines and products. MAPS member Richard Duns correctly diagonosed silt in the lower areas of the block, best reached by taking out the core plugs. With the engine out, the opportunity to repaint the engine block the correct red was obtained and I am very pleased with the results. I also repainted the inner wing areas in the correct satin black. Unfortunately, I had earlier damaged the ether filled tube for the temperature gauge, so that was a trip down to Don at SA Instrument Repairs, Strathalbyn, with the repaired item back very quickly. I highly recommend SA Instrument Repairs. That trip provided me with the opportunity to look at the cars on sale at Collectable Classics. Sadly, the Morgan I fancied was sold, but I think Mary was relieved. Meanwhile, the TR4A and 450SLC have, garage before enjoying trips out. Mike O ( fingers crossed) slept quietly in the

11 70 YEARS AGO 1948 WHAT WAS NEW? I guess you ll all know She s a beauty - In Australia, Holden s 48/215 launched in November Don Loffler s example pictured left. The Moggie Minor with a pre war 918cc side valve engine, instead of the flat four unit favoured by designer Alec Issigonis. (The Morris Register SA Club has big celebration event here in SA on August 26th.) Citroen s 2CV came out of its wartime hiding, sporting all of 9BHP from the 375 cc air cooled engine. 120 by model name and 120 MPH by performance, the first of the Jaguar XK models created a storm with its performance and price. Rootes Group s Sunbeam Talbot 90 with a OHV 2 litre unit began what was to be a long model run. Land Rover s 4WD may have started as a stop gap model, but became a motoring icon. Ferry Porsche, son of the Beetle designer revealed Project 356, in July, at the Swiss Grand Prix. Powered by the flat four VW engine, who would have predicted just what cars and successes would follow? Austin s A90 Atlantic, bottom left, made its first appearance with a convertible top, aimed at the US market, with the tin top following in Meanwhile, over at Austin s competitor, the 2.5 litre Riley RMC roadster commenced production, but only about 500 examples were made. However, that was nearly ten times the number of the American Tucker, bottom right. Lots more cars introduced in 1948 and signs of what was to come. Mike O

2018 HANDOVER LUNCH 12 A very successful 2018 Handover Lunch at the Ardrossan Hotel Motel with 80 members present. Excellent food and service. There were a number of awards made with Jenny Penhall, Craig Farrow, Peter & Pam Wilton receiving trophies. Certificates of Appreciation were given to Leith and Vivienne Illman, plus Lyndon and Dawn Penney for their contributions to recent log book and subs payment days. The new President, Peter Anderson made a brief address to the members present, expressing his pleasure at seeing such large numbers at the lunch and other events. Thanks to Events Co-Ordinator, Richard Bastian for his part in bringing the whole program together. A number of the members brought along their classic vehicles, one member had the misfortune to lock his keys in the car! As with all club events a list of members attending is compiled by the Events Coordinator. Hopefully this will encourage people to bring along their historically registered car, if they have one. These will be recorded and published. Cars not on club rego will be listed as modern. Pictured below the lovely Ardrossan Hotel Motel staff get a sideways look from Richard Bastian. 14 BURRA TO MORGAN RUN 2018 I never need encouragement to go to Burra and the biennial run to Morgan is an event we look forward to as there s a lot to enjoy around the town before you even start to get involved in the motoring side of things. The actual run marks the first crossing of the Mallee lands back in Today it is hard to imagine that a trip of about 90 kilometres took days when we now travel on the well surfaced bitumen and get from one town to another in a about an hour. For those on the veteran and vintage age vehicles, the trip can still present a challenge, but no need to dig the vehicle out of the sand. We left for Burra on the Friday, so as to enjoy a long weekend. Unfortunately, due to the repair needed on the Alvis hood, it was the Benz which got the outing, but I don t think Mary minded that. Our route took in Mintaro where we enjoyed a light lunch at Reilly s Winery. It was good to see that the nearby 14 Magpie Stump hotel is up and running, so that s a trip for another day. Onwards to Burra and a checkout on the Bon Accord Hotel as we had enjoyed a previous visit there and the menu choice looked good, plus mine host Tim was most welcoming We then booked in at the very well equipped Paxton Cottages which have been enhanced in many ways. Our evening meal at the Bon Accord was excellent. A roaring open fire and four Coopers ales on tap being just the ticket. The player piano was not initially in action, but some kids were hitting odd out of tune notes. We were sharing a table with David, a chap from Noarlunga. He said to the kids that he could show them how it should be done and proceeded to sit down and play a classical piece so masterly. After a good night s sleep we awoke to find that there had been a heavy frost. Breakfast was at the St Just café, another place we have made a favourite. Scrambled eggs with smoke salmon, or the best muesli I ve tasted, A number of other entrants arrived and there was an optional drive round the town, before registration, nibbles and chat in the old Burra Chapel. A quick change and down to the Burra Hotel for the evening meal. We sat with some members of the Riverland VCCC and enjoyed a great deal of laughter. Early start on a fine sunny Sunday morning with breakfast served by the guys from the Burra Men s Shed. Maisie got fed too many sausages I ll say no more! With the older vehicles flagged off first at 9.30 A.M. for the near 90km drive to Morgan. No motorcycles entered this year; a sign of people getting older and the weather being colder. In the 450 SLC we were all nice and cosy with an easy drive to morning tea at the 42km mark, The Gums. Plentiful food was served by the volunteers from the Burra National Trust. Our destination at Morgan was on the grassed riverside area, near the ferry crossing. This was an ideal spot, allowing the cars to be displayed along with some of the very fashionable drivers and passengers. The Boehm family in the 1926 Rugby always put on a good show of costumes which match the car s era. An award was given to the owner of very smart 1930 Ford coupe. Well done to the locals and the NARC team for the enjoyable time. During the weekend I was pleased to catch up with previous organiser, Roger Cross, in his relatively new Morgan a car providing the best of both worlds. Another car which took my attention was the dark green 1956 Armstrong Siddeley 234 owned by Andrew Christopher. A very nice example and an under valued marque which has a great back up club. We took our time travelling home on the following day, pleased with the weekend and looking forward to the MAPS campout there in October. If you ve not booked, get on to it now! Mike O
