The forthcoming sale of the Rose Collection in August may well see this car, the 1955 Nash, plus the EH Holden, the Ford LTD and the Dodge truck going to new owners away from the Yorke Peninsula.. It would be nice to think that they all find nice homes. Details of the sale are on page 14 of this edition. IT S LESS THAN THREE WEEKS TO PAY SUBS AND GET LOG BOOKS PROCESSED. LAST FACE TO FACE EVENT TO DO THIS IS 24TH JUNE NEXT SUNDAY AT WAURALTEE.

6 RARE AS HENS TEETH AUSTIN 105 WESTMINSTER ESTATE. Spotted in the latest edition of the UK magazine, The Automobile the web site link took me to the following details.; Offered without reserve with all proceeds being donated to the Lennox Children's Cancer Fund, this one of ten A105 Countryman's, and the only automatic produced, was offered for auction via ACA in Remaining unsold, it seemed inevitable that the car was heading for the banger track. A plan was hatched between ourselves and Danny Hopkin and Russ Smith of Practical Classics magazine to restore the car to a useable, everyday level. Following a couple of failed starts, Les Ely and the team at CL Panelcraft undertook the restoration and repaint of the bodyshell. The quality of the work carried out by CL was to such a high standard the decision was made that this level of workmanship had to continue throughout the entire project. Andy Waters of CBR Motorbodies, then took on the unenviable task of putting it all back together again. Their level of dedication is unsurpassed. Even as we write this on the 4th May, Andy has taken the car back to his workshop following the successful completion of the 1,000 mile reliability run with Practical Classics for final fettling. Rob, Lyn and everyone at ACA would like to give their heartfelt thanks to all those who have helped over the last six years, a full list of these dedicated volunteers will be online in due course. ACA will be applying for UK re registration during the next few weeks. I ve been looking at the idea of getting a classic Estate Car, or wagon as they call them in Australia. Good examples are getting rarer and going up in price, plus the majority of those for sale are general on the large size. I was tempted by a Triumph 2500TC model, but as these would have been personal imports from the UK, the dreaded tin worm makes for possible problems. Mike O

BACK TO THE RIVERLAND JUNE LONG WEEKEND Whilst a MAPS campout in the Renmark area last year showed us lots of attractions, the opportunity to see more on a long weekend trip with the Gawler Club was not an opportunity to miss. The weather forecast indicated possible showers and colder night thus we were glad to take the cosy 450SL Mercedes and be booked into a very nice dog friendly cabin at the Paringa Caravan Park. This park has certainly had a lot of upgrades in recent years. The group of around 80 people were spread various motels and caravan parks, but we were able to share a free get together BBQ at the Renmark Budget Motel on the Friday night. Saturday was a trip to the excellent Paringa Agricultural Museum where the work over the last decade has made this a great collection of items. A short drive to Lock 5 provided a riverside lunch area and the supplies came in from the Paringa Bakery no shortage of food and excellent quality and portions. From there we were free to have a general drive around and we chose to visit Cammie s Antiques and the Wool Shed Brewery. The latter had been a place to remember from the 2017 MAPS trip, but this time we avoided the temptation of the 8% Hard Lemonade. OK, so bought some locally brewed Summer Ale instead. Meanwhile, the majority of the group were enjoying a cruise on the PA Industry from Renmark. Pictures a good trip for the Model A Ford, Maisie at the Museum and an uplifting Paringa event 7

8 Saturday night s meal was at the Renmark Hotel and then an early night, so as to be ready for the busy Sunday trip to three rural properties on which their owners had significant collections of motor vehicles. The first was Alawoona to see the vehicles of Lloyd Griffiths, housed in two vast sheds. Holden fans would think they d died and gone to heaven due to the many original cars from Torana s to Monaro s and all tings in between. However it was not all GM items on show as there were a sprinkling of other makes and my first chance to see a Lamborghini in the flesh. Morning tea was served on the veranda of the old homestead. Continuing on the dirt roads, we arrived the property of Colin Gibbs where lunch was served before the viewing of his vast Chamberlain tractor collection and a wide selection of vintage and classic vehicles, such a beautiful 1920 s Buick and two trucks. The workmanship on the restorations of these was outstanding. Ear muffs would have been a wise choice for the next part of the tour; the inspection and starting up of over a dozen GM engines of all sizes. Just as well Colin does not have too many close neighbours! With the noise still ringing in our ears, it was on to Warren May s farm where the large selection of Ford vehicles made up for the Holden morning episode. Dick Penhall would have hard to drag away. However, we had to leave and ensure we were at the Paringa Hotel for our evening meal after a lot of travelling. The Paringa Hotel did not disappoint us. Picture right; A Charger, HK Monaro, Dodge truck and a Ford ute

9 Monday morning saw us meet up and drive a short distance to the old Chaffey Brothers homestead and neighbouring museum. This was followed by the delights of the nearby Kumquatery where we sampled various jams and other tempting home made items made from this relatively unknown fruit. I think that pretty well everyone bought something! As well as the produce, a local car club member arrived in a very nice Volvo 144 saloon which was sporting a For Sale notice at under $3000. ( See details elsewhere in this edition). Midday saw us arrive at the Bella Lavender Estate for lunch and a short talk on the lavender processing. Then onto Cobdogla Irrigation Museum and a ride on the train. To cap the day off in true car club style, we headed for Loveday to view a vast array of cars in a paddock. Many were relatively new Jaguars and Mercs, but a few odd cars noticed, such as 1950 Vauxhall Velox, a 1955 MG Magnette and a 1970 s Peugeot 604. Having stayed on for the next day, we were able to pack up and head home with a lunch time stop at Banrock Station. For those with less distance to travel, there was the added attraction of a visit to the Riverglen View Glass Studio. However, we were keen to get home in the daylight and made this with ease. The 450SLC excelled itself and proved to be a most usable car for us and Maisie the dog. Fuel wise, it used about 16 litres per 100km. So an excellent weekend and lots of thanks due to the organisers from the Gawler club, especially Trevor and Lynn Bellchambers, Lorraine and Barry Bywaters, plus a trusty gang of marshals who ensured we did not go astray. 10 0 to 60+ My Life With Cars ep 9 10 The year was Mark passed his first posttransplant year in perfect health. We now had two Austin s, two Thunderbirds, the 63 Compact Fairlane and Doug had bought an XP Falcon just to drive around in. Over the next couple of years, we nearly completed the house, helped by the fact that when we had been in Adelaide with Mark, some local builders had been and built our verandah and decks. We also went through a few cars as the XP threw a rod, so that went up to a cousin s farm at Urania and we bought an old Kombi. This vehicle was something else. It only had the front bench seat. Doug bolted in a lounge suite in the back so we could actually carry nine people. He did put seat belts in but I don t think it would have passed through Regency! We drove everywhere in this thing. I drove it to school, took kids up to band at Maitland in it, we took grandparents on country drives and even camped in it. It featured in a primary school assembly where the kids painted a funny face on the front and it stayed like that until it basically died. We loved that thing so much we went looking for another one and found a later model Kombi properly set up to seat seven, with really modern stuff such as a radio, heater and windscreen washers! Ironically at the time we were also driving the 64 T-Bird which was left hand drive, but featured such things as cruise control, automatic headlights, electric windows and seats, swing away steering wheel and 390 cubic inch power. Talk about poles apart! This Kombi served us very well for a while until one trip up to Maitland with a car load of kids going to concert band practice. Coasting down the hill just out of Maitland on the way home, we were singing our band parts at the top of our voices when a gunshot went off! Well that s what it sounded like. The Kombi slowed as the engine stopped running and we parked on the side of the road. Getting out, I didn t really know what had happed but lifting the rear engine door revealed the awful truth. A huge crack had split the block in half. It was done for and now I had seven kids on the side of the road. We had never been in the RAA so that wasn t an option. I had to call Doug, again, called as many parents as I could to pick their kids up and we towed the Kombi home. It ended up in a friend s backyard but I don t think he ever did anything with it. We became quite active in the T-Bird Club even though it was based in Adelaide, meeting some very interesting people along the way. It was a very small club and Doug was actually president for a short while. One member who owned a gorgeous 65 red convertible and whose wife owned a perfectly restored pink 63 cigar bird, so called because of the overall shape, also owned an XW GTHO Falcon which he had bought new. (He still owns it). We visited his place near Kuitpo and he had a car showroom in his house! It was set up as a garage (no surprises there) complete with black and white chequered flooring, old petrol pumps, a corner diner and a lot of Coca Cola memorabilia. What an awesome place and you could sit in the lounge room and look at it and all the cars through the plate glass window. At the time he also had a couple of genuine Shelby's and a Sunbeam Tiger 289 V8 which I liked.

On our still frequent trips to Adelaide we often called in to Joe s Golden Gasoline at Pooraka where a good variety of imported cars were always on the lot. Many roughies were outside but he had some interesting stuff in the big shed. Sometime in 97, we were poking around there looking at Mustangs, Thunderbirds and many others when I spied a sad looking convertible right in the back corner. It was LHD Falcon, blanketed in thick dust, one dull eye and the other missing, listing to the left, faded red and grey paint with a tattered rag-top draped listlessly down the sides. Lifting the hood (USA lingo) revealed an oil soaked engine which surely had not seen the highway for a long time. The price was $7000. Doug and the kids took a perfunctory glance her way and moved on. Meanwhile I got down into the dust and dirt to check out the underneath. The body looked pretty straight and to my surprise I found that scraping away the years of dirt revealed shiny galvanised metal. Not one indication of rust in the subframe or the rocker panels. A week later, we arrived back there with a car trailer to pick her up. The engine did actually run, but only just made it onto the trailer, sounding like a chaff cutter and emitting huge palls of black smoke. Later on, when she was safely tucked into our shed, over the pit, one could have been forgiven for wondering why? It didn t take long to start stripping her down, cleaning years of oily dirt from underneath and getting her ready to undercoat. Meanwhile, I had found some papers in the glove box with the former owner s name, Mindi Payne and an address in California. I wrote to her and to my amazement, a letter came back. Written on yellow paper in pink ink with a border of hand drawn hearts, she was a 17 year old girl. The car had been bought by her father as a Valentine s Day present for her mother in Feb Later, they had given it to Mindi for Christmas when she got her license. She had been driving it to school when some nasty boys had cut her roof and jumped on the hood. After that she took it out into the desert and spun it out crashing into a rock, hence the ding in the rear quarter panel. The 11 engine was tired, the brakes shot and dad had decided to sell it. She had called the car HoopDee. Over the next year, we painted her in the original colour, Red Satin, rebuilt the motor and replaced brakes and suspension parts. Having a friend in the US who had a Mustang Parts business, I was able to get a new top, new petrol cap and bonnet emblem sent over as a birthday present. Some upholsterers we know re-trimmed the seats and the four of us took 10 hours to fit the new convertible top. Dash Original moulded new door trims and arm rests from scratch, probably the most expensive part of the resto. When it came time to get her registered, a lovely guy from Regency Park came over and did the inspection at our place over our pit. We gave him cups of tea, scones, jam and cream and he passed her with flying colours. All very easy! Meanwhile, Mark who was going extremely well, passed his five year health tests and was getting close to learning to drive. He was taking a big interest in our cars and of course wanted a car of his own. We bought him an XR Falcon in pretty rough condition on the proviso that he do a lot of the work to fix up the body. Mark was already a pretty handy welder so with that he set about cutting out rust and welding in new sheet metal. He painted the car red, had the seats reupholstered by the same people we know who did the Falcon Convertible and added some striping and chrome wheels. He had done a pretty good job of it so we decided to buy him a brand new 250 2V motor to put in it and he was on the road. With a number plate to reflect the car itself, TRU XR 6 became quite well known around the district. In typical Wilkin fashion, Mark couldn t resist the odd act of indiscretion but nothing too wild or expensive! It was obvious we had passed on our interest and passion. It s in the DNA. Carol Wilkin Picture over leaf.
