2 Cover Profile Bill & Kath Salters 1954 FJ Holden We bought our 1954 FJ Holden at Moonta in 2002 for $300. It came with most parts but was mostly dismantled. Bill asked a friend for advice and was encouraged to go ahead and buy it. It was loaded onto a trailer and brought to Clare to be stored in Bill s brother s shed until he had time to spend on it. This was estimated to be about 1 year. However. time flies and about 9 years later Bill decided to commence the restoration as he had semi retired by then. So.. back onto a trailer and up to our shed. Bill completely dismantled it and he and his brother worked on the car, doing welding repairs, fitting new inner and outer body seals and much, much more. Bill overhauled the brakes and then the rubbing down. There was much hard work to be done and Bill had a few rest months in between. The vehicle was then painted and left to harden for a couple of weeks. Then the reassembling began new hood lining, trims, carpet, it was extremely challenging and a few new words were learnt. The seats had been reupholstered by Clare Upholsterers who did a really great job. Bill then started looking at the motor. With even more challenges he partly dismantled it and fixed the oil problem with the camshaft, then fitted a new timing gear head gasket, gave it a valve regrind, just to mention a few. Test drive time! After registering the FJ we took it on a road test and all was good. Our first drive out of Clare was to the fair at Brinkworth where we met up with the PADARC group and joined in the drive to the oval and display. It was a lovely day and we returned to Clare safely. 4 Hello Members, Hasn t the weather been cold lately. Spring will soon be here! The countryside is looking nice and green though. Hopefully the rain will continue into the remainder of the grain season, and the farmers will have a good year. (All we need now is some sunny weather to get the crops to grow.) August is the Month when the Club gets back into the busy times again with quite a few Runs on in the coming months. Please support these runs and get your Historic Vehicle out and participate. The Crystal Brook Show will be the next run, and it looks as though it will be well attended with quite a few names on the list of attendees already. Also David has organised another run to Booleroo Centre area again in the week or so after the Show. Check out the Upcoming Events section for details. I have been working in the shed over the past few months in readiness for the Engine Displays, (when warm enough,) as I like to have something new or different for my displays each year. Spending time in hospital also has been Rian Chappell who had a medial procedure in the Port Pirie hospital. Pat Greenfield joining the heart attack patients who also spent some time in the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Frank Ventura is still not his old self. Happy too report Bill, Rian & Pat are progressing well. To any other members not enjoying good health get well soon. August 2016 Crank Talk 5

ANNUAL HANDOVER DINNER 24 JUNE This year the venue we chose for our luncheon was the North Laura Hotel where forty plus members enjoyed the meal & atmosphere of first rate country cuisine.

Congratulations to our worthy winners; Kerrie-Lea Scarman who took out the coveted Ross Hogben Award.

Kym Greenfield was awarded the Editors Award for his submissions & pictures in Crank Talk & a creditable mention for her submissions to the magazine went to Kerrie-Lea.

6 ANNUAL HANDOVER DINNER 24 JUNE This year the venue we chose for our luncheon was the North Laura Hotel where forty plus members enjoyed the meal & atmosphere of first rate country cuisine. There was a chill in the air when we departed our clubrooms but with the absence of rain, the pleasant drive & the warm dining room, folk soon forgot the winter condition outside. Congratulations to our worthy winners; Kerrie-Lea Scarman who took out the coveted Ross Hogben Award. This award voted on by her peers in the Club Committee is for her efforts & commitments over the past year. Kym Greenfield was awarded the Editors Award for his submissions & pictures in Crank Talk & a creditable mention for her submissions to the magazine went to Kerrie-Lea. The Stirrers & Motivation Award went to David Scarman, he has been responsible for PADARC having an Internet page & Facebook, plus he has had many good & appreciated ides taken on board this year. This recipient is selected by the Club President. Following the presentations Club President Andrew Todd, who again accepted the position of president welcomed several new members to the committee, thanked those who had served the preceding year & gave a summary of the clubs progression. Club Patron Pat Greenfield also delivered a short address & congratulated the recipients, it was unfortunate that due to illness Kerrie Lea & her husband David were not in attendance to receive their awards. The awards were presented to Kerrie-Lea & David at the July General Meeting as was a Trophy for best motorcycle 1960 on, won at our Biennial Rally by Leith Button who was unable to be at the rally trophy presentation. 8 At the handover Dinner last to arrive & almost suffering from hunger devastation was Robert Richards. Struth said Robert when he entered the dining room, I came to the conclusion all you guys had either had a mental blank or got lost, I've been waiting up the road at Wirrabara for you all too arrive. We were happy to see him & to insure him where the mental blank was. Farmer Jack once lived on a quiet rural highway but as time went by, the traffic slowly built up and eventually got so heavy and so fast that his free range chickens were being run over, at a rate of three to six a week. So Farmer Jack called the local police station to complain, "You've got to do something about all these people driving so fast and killing all my chickens," he said to the local police officer. "What do you want me to do?" asked the policeman. "I don't care, just do something about those crazy drivers!" So the next day the policeman had the Council erect a sign that said: SCHOOL CROSSING Three days later Farmer Jack called the policeman and said, "You've still got to do something about these drivers. The?school crossing' sign seems to make them go even faster!" So again, they put up a new sign: SLOW: CHILDREN AT PLAY. That really sped them up. So Farmer Jack called and said, "Your signs are no good. Can I put up my own sign?" In order to get Farmer Jack off his back said "Sure. Put up your own sign. The phone calls to the Police Station stopped, but curiosity got the better of the Officer, so he called Farmer John,? How s the problem with the speeding drivers. did you put up your sign?" "Oh, I sure did and not one chicken has been killed. The policeman was really curious and thought he'd better go out and take a look at the sign. He also thought the sign might be something the Police could use elsewhere, to slow drivers down.. So he drove out to Farmer Jack's house. His jaw dropped the moment he saw the sign. Leading our senior birthdays for August is Dennis Scarman 65 on the 31st. Heather Nottle celebrating 60 years on the 11th. Ute McKay clocking up 55 years on the 25th & Derek Bennier will be 45 on the 11th. PADARC Juniors Happy Birthday to Olivia Maywald for her 15th Birthday on the 28th, Also Happy Birthday to Imogen Pech for her 5th birthday on the 27th.
