2 BROADHEATH WALK. On Saturday 20th August 2016, the North Worcestershire Association of the National Trust (NWANT) held a joint walk with the Droitwich Spa German Twinning Group. Of the 10 walkers, 5 were NWANT members, and 8 were twinning members (three of us are members of both). There had been heavy rain overnight, and it was still raining at breakfast time, but the forecast was for it to clear up, with the odd shower. For once, the forecast was right. Unfortunately, the early rain deterred some from walking. We met at the Bell Inn in Lower Broadheath, and the rain had stopped, although it was windy. The clouds parted, and we saw some blue sky. We set off, and were soon walking across fields which were remarkably dry. We went around the southern edge of Hallow, and had a good view of the church. Later, we saw two donkeys in a field. One of them was having a good time rolling over and over in the grass. We had to make one detour, as a field we should have crossed was planted with maize, which had grown to over head height. We had a very good lunch at the Bell, and were joined by 5 others. Peter Field had arranged for the "Pensioners Perks" menu to be available to us, even though it is not usually available on a Saturday. Most of us opted for two courses, including Roger Collins who ordered a starter and main. However, when he saw some of us eating a large Lemon Blizzard, he couldn't resist having one too! Many thanks to Peter Field for organising the trip. North Worcestershire Association of the National Trust. The NWANT was founded in 1994 with the aim of supporting the National Trust by entertaining local Trust members with talks, excursions and planned holidays. Evening meetings, which cost just 2.00, with interesting speakers are held monthly, on the third Thursday, from September to June in the Tardebigge Community Hall at 19:30. Why not come along and meet us? Local walks and coach trips to places of interest are arranged all year round, and there is also an annual holiday. All profits are given to the National Trust. The total raised to the end of 2015 is over 55,000. They mainly support local properties. 4 GARDEN PARTY. Our annual Garden Party this year was held on a sunny and warm Sunday, 3rd July, at Salwarpe Village Hall. As usual, this event was very well attended, with about 50 people present, including the deputy mayor and his wife. In the absence of our chairman, who was on (yet another!) holiday, the event was hosted by our Vice-Chairman, David Morris, who did a grand job. The food was excellent, and there was a good selection of desserts, with enough for second helpings. During the lunch, we had a 30 question quiz. This was won by Frank Holliday, who scored 24 out of 30, and he won a bottle of wine. Many thanks once again to Adrienne and her team for a wonderful event. MALBERGBAHN UPDATE. I wrote last year about the Malbergbahn in Bad Ems, which was the first funicular railway in Germany. Here is an update on progress since then. The temporary cafe has now been replaced by one more permanent. It is called "Cafe Eckstein" after Elisabeth Eckstein, who was a prominent member of the group set up to restore the railway, and who died in 2010 aged 91. The vandalised lower carriage has been cosmetically restored, and now forms extra seating for the cafe. One of the seats in the carriage has been named in her honour. Other seats have been named for other local people, including one for Mayor Josef Oster. The restored carriage and cafe were officially opened in May this year, at a ceremony which attracted many visitors. It had been suggested that the carriage be left in it's vandalised state as a way of attracting funds, but it was pointed out that it had attracted very little in the last 40 years, and it is hoped that more support will be received now that it looks as though it could run at any moment. 5 BEDSPRING 2017 TRAVEL. Are you intending to drive to twinning in 2017? Are you worried about possible problems driving via Calais? If so, have you considered using the ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland? Stena Line Ferries operate this service. From their website I have found the following sample services Travel out on 1 st June Harwich 09:00 23:00 Hook of Holland 17:15 08:00 Cost Return on 6 th June Hook of Holland 14:15 22:00 Harwich 19:45 06:00 Cost The cheapest fare is return for a car and two adults. Note that cabins can be booked. Driving from Droitwich to Harwich can be via the M6 and A14 (to avoid the M25) and is 193 miles, which should take about 3 hours 30 minutes. Travelling via the M40 and M25 is 221 miles and takes about 3 hours 45 minutes. The times and distances quoted were found on Google. The drive from the Hook of Holland to Bad Ems is just over 250 miles (400 k), and the driving time is about 4 hours. For comparison, Droitwich to Dover is shown as 210 miles, taking 3 hours 30 minutes, and Calais to Bad Ems as 325 miles, taking about 5 hours.
