THE FRUSTRATIONS OF BEING AN EDITOR In common with many other car club editors, I get frustrated with the difficulty in obtaining event reports. Due to a flurry of events and a lack of reports, this edition has lots of photos, as that has been the only input, apart from a summary by Events Co-ordinator, Graham Klingberg. My thanks to him for providing that. Of course I could opt for a ruse used by one fellow editor: a blank page except for a comment such as, This is where the report from A.N. Other would have been, had it been submitted. The newsletter is the Club s biggest outlay by way of postage and printing, so give me a break and help me continue to make it worthwhile. My thanks to all those from other clubs who say they enjoy it anyway! Mike O WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS- Richard & Marg Bastian from Moonta with a 1923 Buick Tourer (Richard gave a lead to our guest speaker for June much appreciated) Nick Price from Wallaroo Stephen & Martha Marks from Maitland Well known to many MAPS members as they are Mine Hosts at the Yorke Valley Hotel. An increasing number of MAPS members enjoy a pre meeting meal at the YV. Stephen and Martha were also on the catering team at Wheels & Wings I liked the Lindemans Early Pick! YPVVCMC RALLY & RUN RESULTS Best Veteran, Darryl Oldland, 1914 Pope Beat Static Derek Rutter s 1955 BSA Bantam The Combined Truck and Motorcycle Run to Port Victoria, 20th March. 3 Three trucks, 13 cars and 9 motorcycles with 40 people made up the entries. It was a pity that only short notice was given for this event as I for one would have taken part. Let s hope it gets repeated. For MAPS members, Leon & Natalie Hall took his Kawasaki outfit, The McPhee s in the Humbers, Wilton s Holden Ute, Derek Rutter MGB, Knopes Mercedes 230CLK, Jim Davis, Harley Davidson took part. By all accounts it was a good run and the lunch at the Port Victoria Hotel appeared to have gone down well. SUBS & LOG BOOK PROCESSING These appear to be going well with about half the subs collected so far and a similar proportion of log books processed. Thank you to all those who have co-operated with the officers dealing with a demanding task which has to be done efficiently. With a number of opportunities and venues and method, there should be no reason for all members to ensure that by July 1st, the task will be 100% complete. UPDATE ON OUR MUCH LOVED PATRONS Just finishing the April MAPS Review and thought it would not be complete without an update on Don & Shirley Rose Don is home and has had some reaction to medication, but going along OK Shirley was home, but taken to Wallaroo Hospital yesterday due to shortness of breath- fluid on lungs. The event which happened nearly a couple of weeks ago was in fact a mild heart attack- not a stroke as first reported. I suppose that s better as that means Shirley can still talk and fly the broomstick, God bless her! Mike O

6 HELP NEEDED AS ANNOUNCED AT APRIL MEETING From Adrian Brown 9 Duffield Street Gawler East SA 5118 Dear Car Club Members I am looking for information to help me with my project, building a wooden body frame for a 1920 Angus Sanderson. This car body was built by Autocars of Flinders Street, and is a two seater what would be called a roadster here in Australia. It was originally from Minlaton and was retrieved to Adelaide in 1970 and I acquired it in 2014, and am really just beginning a restoration. The car belonged to Mrs. Ann Taylor in 1932 and its registration number at that time was She lived at Minlaton. My main reason for writing to you is to see if anyone in your club owns, or knows of, another car particularly a two seater built by Autocars in the early 1920 s. The timber for my car is about 70% complete and I would like to see another car to find out how it was put together. I am fairly sure that build techniques would be similar across the cars that they built bodies for at that time. These cars include; Overland, Willys Knight, Nash and Vauxhall. My car has a nickelled brass plate across the door sill, saying built by Autocars Limited of Flinders Street. Thanks for your time Adrian Brown Gawler East SA From Wikipedia- The Angus-Sanderson was an English automobile manufactured from 1919 to 1927 by Sir William Angus, Sanderson & Company Ltd. In concept it was something like the Bean and Cubitt; the idea was that one model would be mass-produced, as Ford had done so successfully. The 14 hp (10 kw) car was an assembly of proprietary parts, containing as it had a 2.3-litre side-valve engine from Tylor, a 3 speed gearbox and rear axle by Wrigley, Woodhead springs, and Goodyear wheels. One distinctive feature were disc wheels with a wavy pattern. Indeed, the company made fewer of its own parts than any other British car company at the time. Approximately 3000 cars were produced but the car was expensive at 575. It came on the market in 1919 and by 1921 the impact of the Morris at undercut prices killed it off, although not before cars had been supplied to the Princess Royal and to S.F. Edge." [ The company was refinanced as Angus Sanderson (1921) Ltd and moved production from Birtley, County Durham to the Grahame-White aircraft factory in Hendon, Middlesex in 1921 and toyed with the idea of building a smaller 8 hp car in 1925 but few, if any were built. Neither of these actions nor a price reduction to 365 staved off the inevitable, and the company folded for good in [

11 How about encouraging the owners of these cars to get them all on a club run? How about- Sunday 4th September Starting point would be at Moonta at 1030 and the finish point would be the Ardrossan The entry cost for a car load is $20.00 a. At the start coffee and tea would be supplied to the entrants and also at the finish. The lodge will provide a variety of salads, BBQ meat and bread for $4.00. Soft drinks will be available for those requiring them. More details to follow. Perhaps a special gift for those bringing their oldies - I mean cars!

12 BRINKWORTH COUNTRY FAIR, SATURDAY, 16TH APRIL As we were the only MAPS members to take up the PADRAC invitation, event I lay on praise for what turned out to be a most enjoyable day at Brinkworth. We headed off in the TR4A at about 8 AM, so as to take a easy run up, enjoying a nice coffee and jam doughnut at the Jitter Bean Oasis café at Lochiel recommended. Even then we were well in time for the AM line up, allowing us to browse a couple of garage sales in Brinkworth s main street. We were pleased to get some bits to suit our classic caravan before the line up of about 20 cars proceeded to the oval, all efficiently marshalled into two rows. PADARC had their area nicely marked with flags This was adjacent to the excellent display stand set up by the Chrysler Restorers Club SA flags and shaded gazebo areas already and waiting. Sharon Gibb pictured left snapping her other half, Brenton. We had plenty of people to catch up with and to discuss matters such as the 2017 West on Wheels Federation Tour. It was good to meet the new PADARC Secretary, Leith Button and to help him sign up a new member. Pictured left, the PADARC team relax in the sunshine. Mike O PS Details of PADRAC Rally now available.

15 THE DODGE MAKES TAKES A TRIP WITHOUT A HAT WELL, WITHOUT A BONNET ACTUALLY! With its reconditioned engine, gearbox and brakes, our Dodge Kingsway took its first trip out into the opening for some time. I am still hopeful we will have it all nicely settled in for the trip to Morgan in mid May. It is certainly a roomy comfortable car and the aim is to use it for the trips where we will be taking the small 1960 s caravan we recently purchased. The caravan had a short trial to the campout at Marion Bay and since then I have been attending to various jobs. Pam Wilton sorted out a few areas of the upholstery, new curtains are on order and I think I ve sorted out the water system. The old sink top tank had rusted through. Bob Haywood, Jim Davies and Kevin Kavanagh all helped by giving a wheel each to get a rust free set. I removed the two burner gas stove and the inside Primus cylinder yes, very original, but illegal I d guess? Now we are looking forward to our trip to Morgan in May. In the meantime, here s a reminder that so very often, you only get what you pay for.. A few years ago when I was told the vacuum advance on the Bristol s distributor was not working, I was quoted $100 to get the vac unit repaired. So, looking on the internet, I found a whole new electronic distributor for just $99. It duly arrived and then I realized that I needed other bits to make it really electronic! I had to get these from another firm and finally all fitted. I ve probably done 15000km with the new unit, but then a chattering noise appeared last week. No sign of power loss, but the noise came from the distributor which after relatively short service is clapped. Looking for a replacement, I found units as cheap as $59! However, they too come from abroad where Port Power going to play! So, I went to Pentastar Products who have supplied quality Chrysler parts to me before. A top quality rebuilt unit from Canada was $245 and here in 48 hours. As I ve said, you so often only get what you pay for! Mike O

16 RECENT EVENTS ROUND UP We have had quite a busy period lately, with events that were well supported by members and visitors alike. The Marion Bay Camp-out was a fantastic event. There were 47 who attended, with 6 of those who traveled to enjoy the Saturday with us all, plus 2 friends of Rod and Vonny's from the Strathalbyn Club and four 4 from the Murray Bridge Auto Collectors Club, all who booked in to the Caravan Park. Most took a drive through the National Park, to take in the breath taking sights. Later on Saturday afternoon, we all congregated in the Camp Kitchen area to enjoy fun games before the BBQ dinner, followed by the Unique Card Game that was provided by Shirley and Don Rose. Due to Shirley & Don's absence Re Ill health, it was performed well by Trevor & Lyn. Shirley had done a brilliant job with the setting up of gifts for the game and appreciated by everyone who attended. we wish them both the very best with their recoveries and Get Well Soon. The Yorke Valley Hotel donated 6 meal vouchers for the games prizes. Many thanks to Steve and Martha Marks for their generosity. We welcome them as new MAPS Members. Kylie and Tom Heinrich looked after us and welcomed us to their park with open arms. Tom is to make a permanent wheat bag throwing game for their park. The next weekend saw the Salt Water Classic at Stansbury & Pt. Vincent. The Clerkes were busy all weekend directing traffic etc. Some members attended both days and others only one day. A lot of wooden boat & car owners traveled from all over to attend the weekend. The next Sunday was the Wings "n" Wheels at the Maitland Aero Club Facility. Seventy three members and friends, plus six from the Gawler Club, attended the event, which went off fantastically. The members from the Aero Club did a great job with the 3 course meals, which were sensational. A raffle was run to assist them in their quest to raise funds toward line marking the runway, which is used by many, including the Flying Doctor. A one hour flight worth $250, 1st prize, was donated by one of their members, 2nd prize was a $50 voucher was donated by Sprint ( Kadina ) A beauty package worth $40, was 3rd prize & donated by the Ardrossan Pharmacy. Steve & Martha Marks from the Yorke Valley Hotel donated quite a few bottles of wine and REPCO ( Kadina ) donated some consolation prizes as well. On behalf of the Maitland Aero Club, many thanks to those who donated towards their cause. Steve and Martha also worked on the day, assisting the Aero Club with meals etc. The day was finished off with a flying display for us all to enjoy. Joan & Mike took a short flight after that.( Joan was allowed to take the controls too easy after the MG TC! Ed.) Danny Allen, the Chief Pilot from Aerotech has offered to give us a talk & presentation at the June 2nd General Meeting. His presentation is brilliant, according to Richard Bastian, a MAPS Member & also a NARC Member. Danny recently gave a presentation to them & it involves issues such as dealing with the Pinery Fires & others. We look forward to that from Danny and a night not to be missed, we feel. See you at the next one, Regards Graham Klingberg.
