3 FROM THE EDITOR, We are in the middle of the busy season for motoring events, far and wide. Bay to Birdwood over for another year along with the Biennial Motorfest Classic events. Closer to home we have seen a variety of community events and as I type this, just a few days off the MAPS Melrose Campout. I m hoping I can get shot of a nasty cough and cold in time for that and the Murray Bridge weekend. Personally, car wise, the Bristol has just had some jobs done after its trip to Burra.; tappets all reset, handbrake adjusted, oil change and most important, some work on the steering idler. The last item has made a very positive improvement to the car.. Now I am planning for some other work on the basis of keeping the car on a long term basis. as it just drives so well. Meanwhile, the MG Magnette engine is back in place after the full overhaul, along with a string of other jobs. It sounds really good and is good drive, as you d expect from an MG. However it may well be that the MG will be another one of my major jobs in that I ll get it just right, but then decide that when it s done, I don t really need so many cars. Mary favours a classic estate, but medium size ones are relatively rare, so perhaps a dog friendly hatchback? Good to get a number of reports and articles for this edition; keep them coming please. One item I would hope everyone will read is the proposed MAPS Club Rego code for Club Rego. OK, so we have not yet thrown the doors open for any vehicle over thirty years of age as have a number of clubs. On the other hand, the MAPS proposals are relatively relaxed in comparison to others. Will we lose some potential members, such as those with highly modified vehicles or hot rods? I ll leave you to answer that, but our Clubs origin and aims are focused on historic and preserved vehicles. Anyway, the decision one for the members to make when the proposal is made formally. In the meantime, it s been busy with events and more to come. Keeping everyone up to speed on what is going on is a major job for the editor and those planning and coordinating events. SUNDAY 29TH OCTOBER JOINT CLUBS TOUR, SYP MAPS has been invited by the SYP Motorcycle Club to participate in a tour of the southern Yorke Peninsular not just with Classic Bikes, but with the Classic Trucks group as well. We will meet at the SYP Motorcycle Clubrooms, on the Stansbury Road, Yorketown, at approx. 10:00am where all groups will gather, have a cuppa, and then set off at around 10:30am. This eclectic collection of bikes, trucks and cars will make its way around the Leg, arriving (via Warooka) at the Marion Bay Tavern where we will have lunch. Just order off the normal menu. Following lunch we will then continue our meandering journey back to Yorketown. The tour will be run all on bitumen. Please help me spread the word by encouraging your fellow members to join in this unique opportunity; enjoying the company of others whilst acknowledging the variety of Classic vehicles that will certainly enhance the day. 6 MAPS BIGGEST MORNING TEA, KULPARA, WEDNESDAY, 27TH SEPTEMBER. For those who may be new to the club, or have missed previous articles on the Motorfest Classics, here is a brief background to the two week program. With the Bay to Birdwood Runs for two separate age groups of vehicles held on alternate years, there has been a series of events in the weeks before and after the main event. Whilst these were very much part of the B2B publicity, they now stand alone, organised by a separate committee. The various SA historic vehicle clubs are invited to stage events which are open to others, from SA, or interstate, B2B entrants or not. The common meeting place is the Combined Car Club Rooms at Glandore, ideal for those spending time in Adelaide. Having taken part in several of the individual events, initially I was able to persuade MAPS members to put on a morning tea for those attending the YP Field Days. The venue was at the Kulpara home of Dawn and Lindon Penney was the fifth such tea, with three years also including the YP Field Day as a destination. Others were the Farm Shed Kadina and the Snowtown collection of the late Steve Muirhead.. The remaining year was a meet up in Two Wells, Mallala War Grave Cemetery and onto Balaklava Museum. Whilst some clubs understandably make a charge for their refreshments, our policy has been to offer morning tea for free. It s good publicity and a way of a country club putting something back to the old car movement.. The program has been made available to MAPS members, either by , or a printed copy at meetings Unfortunately, only a few MAPS members have taken part in the wide 6 selection of events on offer, due to the distance involved with many final venues being in the City, Hills, or southern areas. Perhaps we can encourage more MAPS participation in future years New Member Officer, Grant Harvey and a few others will vouch for the rewards in attending. Now to the 2017 MAPS even report. I opted to revert back to the Kulpara Morning Tea after a suggestion from one of the regular visitors. However, there was an challenge; Lindon and Dawn Penney were moving from their Kulpara home. Lindon and Dawn generously arranged the hire of the nearby hall. Then, having set a limit of fifty guests many more that we d had in previous years entries flowed in, exceeding our maximum. Would we have sufficient supplies became another worry, but the list of donors snowballed in the last couple of weeks, backed up by us obtaining 100+ scones, cooked by our local CWA. One big improvement over previous years at Paskeville was the provision of reserved parking for entrants by the main gate. Thank you to Elaine Bussenschutt, Paul Thomas and Erica Andrews in assisting with this matter/ The new tea venue also meant a right turn off the main road, so it was fortunate that we had the stock of hi vis vests for our newly certified marshals. A great job done by all those who donned the vests and helped., plus special thanks to Richard Hopkins for heading off to the main gate to round up the visitors. Not long after 8 AM and MAPS members were on scene at the hall, setting up tables and getting things prepared. The food rolled in!; our reputation for the Biggest Morning Tea was safe. The last time such quantities appeared so plentiful was with five loaves and two fish.. Mike o

7 Our guests arrived and we accommodated more than we had booked in. I also had to deal with those had not booked in, but wished to park with the other at the Field Days. I d cut out and distributed some additional red discs which were supposed to be the pass for parking. One problem I could not sort out was that of people who had not gone the Glandore starting point to collect their entry money. The car park was filled with a wide variety of cars, some from interstate I rather liked the red MGA. After about an hour of eating and chatting, our guests left for the Field Day site. It was wise that we marshalled them back onto the main Copper Coast Highway, given the volume of traffic. The clearing up was dealt with and we dispersed; many going on to Clare to view the veteran cars in the National Rally. A bonus for me was the gift of an Alvis picture from Arthur Clisby Thank you. I think it's a Silver Eagle Mike O 7 The Town Marshalls above, plus a variety of the Motorfest Classics visitors cars A very nice MGA1600, Mercedes Benz, Jaguar 2 door and Ford. My choice? Perhaps the MGA for fine days only, but I d be happy with any of them.

8 NATIONAL VETERAN CAR CLUB RALLY, CLARE Both Richard Bastian and myself had been promoting this in recent weeks, so to see a score of MAPS members making the trip over to Clare was pleasing. The prospect of the twilight parade in the Clare main street was a big draw card and I doubt if anyone was disappointed. We booked a couple of nights in the Clare Valley Cabins at White Hutt; delightful location and accommodation is dog friendly. Having settled in and shared a cuppa with Ashley Farrow and Margaret, we headed for the oval to watch the best part of 100 veteran cars and some motorcycles assemble for public viewing. The weather was ideal and it was a great opportunity to look at such a wide range of historic vehicles from all over Australia, not in museums, but out on the road. Shortly after 6 PM, the authorities and marshals closed off the main street. We took up a good vantage point with Erica and Haydn Andrews to watch a man with a red flag march from the oval followed by the assorted vehicles to the main shopping area The light was fading and the assortment of period lights and some modern updates provided a contrast. Many drivers and their passengers were dressed to suit the age of their vehicles. Exhaust and engine noises, plus a multitude of horns, klaxons and whistles added to the atmosphere. Numerous circuits of the street were made as darkness fell. It was such a great mixtures of sights, sounds and smells! The following day we spent time touring around the area, seeing some veteran cars out on the day s tour. On a quiet spot on the way to Mintaro, we 8 came across a lone veteran car parked on the verge with a red rear light flashing. A look around revealed no driver; perhaps he was taking a comfort break I thought. Sadly, I learned later that the car was no longer able to proceed and a trailer was due to collect it. Arriving at Mintaro, we had a pleasant walk around the side roads, discovering a great B&B place which allows dogs. Then a rest back at Reilly's Wine Tasting and Café, plus a look at Splinters & Steel before a back roads trip to Riverton. That evening we headed down to the Sevenhills Hotel to enjoy an excellent meal with MAPS members, Ken & Jeanette Heinrich. Friday morning we called in at the Wuthering Heights B &B when the Heinrichs were just getting ready to depart; another pleasant option for a rural retreat. Breakfast at the Av a Chat café in Clare s main street. Then back to the YP, reflecting on what a great area the Clare Valley offers to explore on our doorstep. A MAPS day trip is something others might like to consider. How fortunate we were to have seen over one hundred vehicles which were one hundred years or more old. I wonder how many of would be brave enough to take on the task of maintaining and driving such cars. On a nice sunny day, it looks fun, but on those days when the cold and rain prevail, it really is a case of, When the going gets tough, the tough get going. of the Mike O

10 10 FROM THE SIGSTONS NZ last year... Napier is famous as an art deco ( buildings etc.) town. Vintage, & Veteran ( it was also the Model T's from all over, day out, when we were there. ) classic cars & trikes are a big thing there also. Every time a cruise ship comes in the car club leaves a big selection of beautifully restored cars on the wharf, all day, with the owners alongside dressed in the appropriate clothes of the day. Also accompanied by a jazz band. Also at Napier is a company called Hooters which takes tourists for a drive for an hour ( or more if you can afford it!). Rosi and Mike chose the cars they would each select for a drive, all perfectly restored, and then discovered each one would be $180 per hour, so thought they would just wait to come home and enjoy their own!

11 11 MINLATON SHOW, WEDNESDAY 4TH OCTOBER Thank you to the 16 members who put their Cars on display at the Minlaton Show. From all reports, entry to the showgrounds and finding a park together went smoothly. Although the morning was pleasant enough, the wind and dust came up soon after 1pm. Sorry that the Parade didn t happen if the club wants to attend as a group again, I would approach the Committee and see if we could get our parade onto their timed program. Results of the Judging for those that were there are Best Old Stock : 1st HZ Holden Panel Van, 2nd XA Ford Coupe :~David Croser Best Old Modified : 1st Holden Torana :~ Scott Liebelt 2nd FB Holden Ute The Show Committee are still looking for the winner of the Best Stock Modern (built after 1980). If you had (or know who had) an orange 2 entry number on their car, there is $ waiting to be claimed. All the organizers have is Craig. They would love to get any information. 12 MODELS AND MORE DAY AT MAITLAND, SUNDAY 8TH OCTOBER 12 The picture theme is - Getting the oldies out - the cars I mean, not the owners A new initiative from the Maitland Progress Association Model s and More a day to promote local clubs, hobbies, sport etc. Set in the parklands on a fine sunny day, it was ideal to take along our vehicles and to have a look at the other attractions. These included the dragster of Brad Hicks, model gas powered dragsters, radio controlled yachts and speed boats. Inside were slot cars racers, plus model railway layout. Food and drink available too. I think we all enjoyed ourselves, meeting people and showing that the M in MAPS stands for Maitland To illustrate the range of the older cars in the Club, The Wood collection of Model T Fords joined by the Ingram 1924 Dodge and the Heinrich 1923 Hupmobile drew lots of attention. 13 13 SOME LATER CLASSICS AT MODELS & MORE A MORRIS PUZZLE The Mitchell Jaguar XJ6 The Andrews Ford Thunderbird The Nixon Prince Doug Miller who lives at Wallaroo, contacted Darren Woods, his Sonin-law who then asked my for help, as he is trying to find out what year the car pictured above was made, This was the secondhand car Doug Miller s father bought about 1940, Doug is the little boy in the photo and his Father mounted the spare wheel on the rear, I asked some Morris enthusiasts, Bill Watson and Jeff Beatty and it appears the car is a Holden-bodied 1929 Morris Cowley roadster. They concur that it is a 1929 model Morris Cowley (or Oxford) roadster. It more than likely had a dickey or rumble seat in the rear. Although the sidelights are not easily visible they should be on the side of the scuttle below the top body moulding line. The angled louvre air vents in the bonnet side panels were introduced in the 29 Holden body. Mike O

14 MELROSE CAMPOUT,OCT I remember back to the first MAPS campout in about As I recall, no more than three or four couples attended. Then, 10 November 2009, over forty members took part and some of the goings on are still talked about to today. E.g. The trip to the hotel at nearly midnight by a Porsche owner and the air conditioned dog, but not the wife! Editor PART ONE Graham Klingberg reports- What a fantastic weekend, with great weather, brilliant entertainment and good attendance at Melrose. 45+ Members' and friends made their way to Melrose for the MAPS Camp-out weekend. While this was booked around 6 months ago, we were blessed with the best weather that was ever possible. Friday evening's dinner at the Mt. Remarkable Hotel was handled pretty well by their staff, with little disruption and the chef did a good job with the variety of food and considering it wasn't only MAPS who were being catered for. Saturday and off to the Stone Hut bakery for an early lunch and some Bird entertainment. ( Top right) Richard Bastian and James Davies had been liaising to make it possible for us all to visit the Golden North Factory at Laura. We did just that after we had visited Brian Beyer and his wife's place to look at his collection of a Triumph car, a stand-by motor on removable wheels, an (1890) 3 wheel bicycle and a walking bike with no name. It looked like a red praying mantis. This was made by Brian from a picture on the computer and while this man has no engineering experience, he has plenty of patience and know-how. Well done Brian, and then to the information centre for a brief video on Golden North and we were all treated to Giant Twins at the end of our visit. 14

15 Well appreciated by all there. Back to Melrose for a break and discussions were held as to which camp kitchen area to use for the night's entertainment, so as the weather was so good, a late change was made to hold it in the park; close handy and no need to go over to the camp site area on the other side of the river. A quick run around the caravan park, informing everyone there of the venue change and supposedly all good, we thought. We had forgotten that the Wiltons' and Wilkins' were staying at another place, so they found themselves at the other venue, until they noticed us all at the other place. Sorry, to them was the explanation! Monica Smith treated us with her violin playing and Roger and Dee Redpath entertained as well with guitar playing and some great singing all round. During this, I mingled with each and every person as usual to involve them all, by way of a small quiz and a tricky question at the end, to help with any tied scores. Question = How did the sport name of GOLF get it's name? G _ O _ W F ( NASTY HEY ) Answer = Gentlemen Only Women Forbidden! It's likely that as many women play now as men do? A brief presentation to the prize winners, in Haydn Andrews Roger Redpath, Kath Mason and Monica Smith and off to bed. This was a fantastic social evening and well done by all involved in participating and with all the day's planning and to Haydn & Erica Andrews for donating some prizes. 16 16 PART TWO REPORT From Mike Osborne Sunday dawned and no sore heads apparent! Some of the group had other commitments and headed off. For those remaining, the plan was to visit the Toy and Puppet Museums at Wilmington as well as look at the Land Rover collection. Mary and I headed off early, so as to get a coffee at Quorn. As a result, we were able to watch the steam locomotive, Justin Hancock get fired up to full steam and head off down the Pichi Richi line. Then we met the party at Wilmington where both Jenny Penhall and Carol Wilkin bought cars. Jenny s purchase was a scale model Ford and Carol s a full size Austin A40 Somerset! A small group got to look at some vehicles not usually seen by the general public too. For those staying on, the Sunday afternoon was a good time to take it easy, enjoy the happy hour and then turn in.. 17 17 BARBARA WHITELAW WRITES, PROMPTED BY THE OLD ADVERT IN LAST MONTH S REVIEW. Dad (Clem Foster) was Australian Motorcycling Champion in the late 1930's & used to repair cars and motorbikes at his home address business, until some time in the late 1940's, when with some friends, he shared a lottery prize, which enabled him to purchase the block at 245 Unley Road, Malvern. The block contained a small iron shed and a couple of petrol pumps, but Dad set about erecting, what was to us kids, a large concrete block building and along the way, he bought adjoining properties, until he had sufficient space to house excellent workshop/lubrication/spare parts/office facilities and a showroom area. The building, which is painted blue and red, is now a Booze outlet. Dad sold Shell Petrol and Lubricants, began as an Austin Dealer, later on he changed to Ford, then in the early 1960's, he changed to a Chrysler Dealership - he retired at about 55 in 1967 approximately.. As teenagers, my half-brother (whom some met at Bethany) and I worked for Dad for some years and it was during this time that I became interested in cars, seeing our regular customers driving so many beautiful vehicles - it was a game Tony and I used to play, during the late 50's/60's, guessing what the cars were, before looking at their badges. Maybe I should add about MAPS member, the late Barry Tapscott, who worked for Yorke Motors, when Dad changed to Chrysler. Barry used to call to each Dealer to do their spare parts ordering, which was his job. Barry praised Dad, that he let him order whatever was needed, rather than delete items, or reduce quantities, unlike the other Chrysler dealers! In my mind's eye, I can see all those lovely old cars again and recall some of the people who drove them - of course most of the cars were not old then. BW

20 20 MAPS Authorised Officers Meeting re new code Thursday September 14 at 6pm in Club rooms Present: Dick Penhall, Richard Duns, Jim Davies, Mike Osborne, Rod Nixon, Marg Bastian (Minute Secretary) Apologies: Trevor Clerke General Business: Options- 1 Adopt code as is and inspect for serial number, engine number etc. 2 Tailor the code to suit MAPS - i.e. additions 3 Tougher as NARCS has done It was unanimously agreed to go with number 2 and the following are the recommended conditions. Item 1: a) Members requesting Club Registration are required to present their vehicles for inspection by a MAPS authorised officer at which time the particulars of the vehicle will be recorded before an MR334 will be granted. b) Vehicles of thirty years of age and over are eligible. c) Regular inspections: if required, members should present their vehicles for inspection d)any modifications are the responsibility of the owner in regard to road worthiness. e) An inspection by a Club Authorised Officer does not constitute an inspection for roadworthiness or legality of any modifications. Item 2: Acceptable Modifications a) Wheels of the period of the vehicle concerned will be approved for use or reproductions of a design of the period with a limit of 1 inch increase or decrease in diameter only. Width of the wheels is not restricted as long as the tyre is contained within the bodywork of the car. b) Modifications to bodywork are limited to that which is necessary to reproduce a variant in the model concerned. c) Suspension upgrades are limited to improve shockers, stabilisers and brakes to improve the efficiency of the original configuration. d) Engines of a different configuration and capacity are acceptable if it were an option in that model. e) Different gearboxes to the original equipment and final ratios are allowed. f) A different model engine in the car e.g. Holden red motor instead of grey, having visible differences is acceptable. g) Visible upgrading of an engine, such as carburettors, is acceptable. h) Exhaust headers are allowed. i) Replicas / tribute such as GT Falcons or Toranas are accepted. j) Interior changes, such as seating from bench to bucket, are allowed if approved by an appropriate engineer. Item 3: Not acceptable a) Major external modifications to bodywork such as cut and shut roofs, flared arches, bonnets modified for protrusion of engine. b) Hot rods. Item 4: Right to appeal a decision made by Authorised Officers. a) A member may appeal against a decision made in respect to Club Registration by making that appeal in writing addressed to the MAPS Committee. b) Three Authorised Officers will discuss the issue and reach a majority decision. These by-laws are to be read in conjunction with the appropriate code for club registration in South Australia.
