Whitfield During the past three months we have continued to receive a few items for our archive in Ft. Collins. We had planned on having our March board meeting there, but due to scheduling problems it did not work out. I want, again, to encourage you to donate rock art related items for inclusion in the archive. We have engaged a student who has inventoried our holdings and will be presenting a short report at our annual meeting. We have had several meetings with archaeologist Larry Loendorf to discuss a recording project in southeast Colorado. This is still in the planning stage but we are reserving some time early in September and hope to give you more information very soon. Planning for the 2007 annual symposium is proceeding. It has been a delight to see the folks in Craig work toward setting up their own CAS chapter and perhaps our having our meeting there gave them a little encouragement. They have coordinated some exciting fields trips. Final Call for Papers abstracts were due 3/15 and we hope to have the selections completed very soon. There are self-guided trips for that those of you who would like to see more rock art on your own. 2 Meet our dedicated CRAA Board Members! This Month: Anne Whitfield - Secretary & Project Chair Anne Whitfield, Louden Ranch 2006 Jan Gorski Anne Whitfield has been a hard working board member since CRAA s inception and has held many board positions. Currently the Project Chair and Secretary of CRAA, she cheerfully donates many hours coordinating and supporting conservation efforts, recording projects and CRAA activities. Along with Mike Maselli and Mark Mitchell she completed the rock art survey of Picture Canyon and created a detailed report for the Forest Service. Anne also coordinates the monitoring projects of rock art sites in Picketwire Canyon each fall and spring with the help of Mike Waugh, Marsha Perry-Ellis and Karl Minck. Anne does volunteer survey and rock art recording for the Forest Service, BLM, Park Service, and U.S. Military (Pinon Canyon). She has also recorded arboglyphs (tree carvings), participated in archival lab projects, and excavation projects as a volunteer. Anne is also a phenomenal photographer and Photoshop expert. She has held two onewoman shows of rock art photography, and has exhibited in several galleries. Anne currently lives in Beulah, CO, a town which recently ran out of water, then almost burned up in a forest fire before the flash floods came, and had a little bout with plague. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy as well as radiation treatments. Be sure to drop her a line and wish her a speedy recovery. 3 CRAA Archive Established at CSU by Peter Faris The Colorado Rock Art Association (CRAA) and the Laboratory of Public Archaeology (LOPA) at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado, have reached a cooperative agreement on establishing a Colorado Rock Art Archive. A cooperative agreement between Peter Faris for the CRAA, and Dr. Jason LaBelle, Assistant Professor of Archaeology at Colorado State University, and signed for CRAA by President Mike Maselli, calls for the use of facilities provided by LOPA to house materials provided by CRAA. Equipment and furnishings for archive use include a file cabinet donated by Mike Maselli, slide viewer donated by Peter Faris, a computer donated by the Denver Chapter/ Colorado Archaeological Society (DC/CAS), and a laser printer/copier/scanner/fax donated by Jan Gorski. Materials included in the archive at this time include three boxes of images and papers from the estate of Bill Buckles, two trays of slides of southeast Colorado rock art from Dell Crandall, one box of pictures and reports on rock art in southeast Colorado including the recording of Hicklin Springs (5BN7) from Peter Faris, and a number of rock art tracings on plastic from Brown s Park in Moffat County by members of DC/CAS led by the late Ray Lyons. All members of CRAA, and others, are encouraged to donate photos and slides of rock art, and related materials, to the CRAA Rock Art Archive. Please make sure you label your donations with location, date and pertinent information. Related materials could include some good rock art reference books, tracings, maps, reports, and field sketches. Additionally, CRAA has a graduate student working on accessioning and recording the donated materials. Marcy Reiser is a graduate student in Anthropology at CSU, and her studies and previous experience make her ideally suited for the position of our first archivist. She volunteers a few hours a week in our archives in exchange for the archival scholarship CRAA voted at the Monte Vista meeting in May Marcy will present a report on the progress of the CRAA Archive at our May meeting 2007, in Craig, CO. GEORGE UT & VICINITY Date: March 23, 24, 25 and 26. Location. St. George, Utah and Vicinity Meeting Place: 8:00 am UT time from the BLM office at 345 E. Riverside Drive, St. George, UT. Leader: Jeff Allen. Phone: allenjeffrey@beyondbb.com Activity Level. Most sites have vehicle access and short walks less than one mile with some light scrambling over talus or easy to moderate slickrock. Vehicle Type: High Clearance. 4wd not required. Carpooling available. Motels/Camping. Abundant motels in St. George. Very good camping at Red Cliffs Recreation area, Snow Canyon State Park, and Zion NP. General Description: Celebrate the spring equinox in Southern Utah. We will visit several archaic, Western Anasazi, and Fremont sites. Sites will be chosen based on participant s interests. Friday, March 23. Whitney Pockets. This major site south of Mesquite, Nevada and has many panels including the famous falling man. Kota Circus is south of here as is a large panel of bighorn sheep. If time permits we might visit the many glyphs at Kurt Nielsen s Babe. Saturday, March 24. Parowan Gap. This predominately Fremont site has glyphs dated back to nearly 3,000 B.C.E. in a birthing cave and many calendrical glyphs. The Gap functions as an astronomical calendar and we will walk from the summer solstice to the winter solstice observation points and stand at the equinox marker as the sun sets. The Paiutes had their own markers and interpretations, including the rock formation called Tabuts Swallows the Sun. On the way to the Gap, we will stop at three petroglyph sites adjacent to Snow Canyon and Lion s Mouth, an archaic pictograph site in a cave west of Cedar City. Sunday, March 25. The high point will be the Cave Valley site in Zion NP, an archaic site in a deep cave. There are many pictographs in the Cave Valley style. On the way, we call visit a bighorn glyphs in basaltic Gould s Wash, Yellow Man in Little Valley, two sites near Smithsonian Buttes and Canaan Gap. Monday, March 26. For those with rock art O.C.D., we will visit the major sites near St. George, including the Santa Clara River and Three Mile sites, Fort Pierce Wash petroglyphs and four foot Red Man. If time permits, we can travel to the Virgin River Gorge to see a fine blue heron petroglph and two additional large panels. Page 4 Colorado Rock Art Association (CRAA)

5 Craig Symposium Field Trips All field trips on Sunday May 20th 1. Vermillion Canyon, Irish Canyon and Raftopoulos Rock Art Site Max: 25 Full Day Trip Located in Brown s Park, 90 miles W of Craig on SH 318 (~2 hour drive). Visits Vermillion Canyon in the am, Irish Canyon & Raftopoulos Ranch in the pm. If time permits a side trip to the Medicine Wheel may be available. Vermillion Canyon: Outstanding site which contains numerous Classic Vernal panels of excellent quality. See pg 178 of Sally Cole s Legacy on Stone. The road can be reached by 2WD vehicle; however, can be impassable if wet. Accessibility: Moderate. From the parking spot, the walk is approximately ½ mile on fairly level ground. Irish Canyon: E end of Brown s Park on Moffat CR 10 N. At the S end of Irish Canyon, there are several Classic Vernal panels. Near the N end of end of the canyon is a birthing scene which is shown on pg 190 in Legacy on Stone. The road in can be reached by two wheel drive (2WD) vehicle. Accessibility: Easy Raftopoulos Rock Art Site (Private Land): Noted for numerous outstanding Classic Vernal panels. The hike is on level ground and about ¼ of a mile from the parking lot. Parking lot can be reached by 2WD vehicle. Accessibility: Easy Medicine Wheel: The southernmost medicine wheel in North American is located south of the Vermillion rock art site. An excellent article by Peter Faris appears in Vol 20, pgs of the URARA Symposium Papers from Sept 1-4, A 4WD is advisable in order to reach medicine wheel. Accessibility: Strenuous. The hike to the medicine wheel is a steep climb of approximately 200 feet in elevation along a steep trail. 2. Raftopoulos Rock Art Site, Irish Canyon and Vermillion Canyon Max: 25 Full Day Trip Visits Raftopoulos Rock Art Site in the am, Irish and Vermillion Canyons in the pm. 3. Raftopoulos Rock Art Site, Irish Canyon and Medicine Wheel Max: 25 Half or Full Day Trip Visits Raftopoulos Rock Art Site in the am, Irish Canyon & Medicine Wheel in the pm. This trip can be a full day trip, however, if attendees chose to forego the Medicine Wheel, the trip would be approximately one-half day. 4. Canyon Pintado and Carrotman Site Full Day Trip Rangely is located approximately 90 miles W of Craig. This field trip may be a self-guided tour. Both sites can be reached in regular cars 4WD not required. See page 11 for website links to self-guided tours of these sites. Canyon Pintado: This National Historic District lies E of Rangely on CO 139. There are numerous pictographs and petroglyphs panels of San Rafael, Fremont, Barrier Canyon and Interior Line Styles. Some of the Canyon Pintado panels are shown on page 80, 100 and 179 in Legacy on Stone. Accessibility: Easy. Carrotman Site: Located south of Rangely, CO, the Carrotman Site contains red and blue pictographs in the Barrier Canyon Style. The Carrotman panels are shown on page 5 of Sally Cole s book Legacy on Stone. Accessibility: Easy. 5. Clock Site, Crooked Wash Sky House, Mud Ball Ridge Sky House and Shaman Cave Full Day Trip Clock Site and Crooked Wash Sky House: The Clock Site is a sandstone monolith, approx 65 mi SW of Craig, and is believed to be a calendar. Crooked Wash Sky House is a drilled hole complex, with solar and lunar alignments. Both have been described as the most important archeoastronomical sites in North America. Accessibility: The road can be impassible in wet weather. The walk to the Clock Site is easy. The hike to Crooked Wash Sky House is moderate. Mud Ball Ridge Sky House: Another archeoastronomical drilled hole complex located approximately 5 miles from Crooked Wash Sky House. Accessibility: Road can be impassible in wet weather. The hike is moderate. Shaman Cave: Located E of Mud Ball Ridge Sky House and believed to be the easternmost example of Fremont Rock Art. There are some Ute Rock Art panels nearby. Accessibility: The walk is ~1/4 of a mile on mostly level ground. 6. Powder Wash (Wyoming): Rock Art, Wickiups, and Horse Corrals Max: 30 Full Day Trip Located just N of the CO-WY border, near Powder Wash, CO, ~75 miles NW of Craig. ~90 minutes drive to site. Visit several pictograph & petroglyph sites associated with a juniper corral fence constructed in the late 1800s by Indian horse raiders. Will also see the corral, wickiups, and small rockshelters fortified by these raiders and used to escape detection by pursuing war parties. Complex of rock art sites & Ute Indian juniper structures that documents warfare & horse raiding from the mid to late 1800s. Outstanding examples of both ceremonial & biographic tradition imagery similar in many ways to that published by Sally Cole from the Book Cliffs area. High clearance recommended. Accessibility: Easy. From the parking spot, the walk to all of the sites is less than ½ mile on fairly level ground. Volume 3, Issue 2 Page 5

10 Colorado Rock Art Association Code of Ethics 1. Members will comply with all local, state, and federal antiquities laws as well as any rules and regulations of the Colorado Rock Art Association and the Colorado Archaeological Society (CAS). 2. All rock art recording shall be non-destructive with regard to the rock art and the site in general. 3. No archaeological collecting or excavation shall be done unless as part of a legally constituted archaeological project and according to Colorado Archaeological Society regulations. 4. No use of the names Colorado Rock Art Association and Colorado Archaeological Society will be allowed unless in conjunction with approved CRAA or CAS projects or activities. Members may use the names for purposes of identification but no project or activity shall be represented as having CRAA or CAS sponsorship without express authorization of their Executive Committees. The CO Recreation Search And Rescue card is recommended for all CRAA members on field trips in Colorado. Get your card at: Colorado Archaeology Society Code of Ethics The Society expects that: 1. Members will uphold State and Federal antiquity laws. 2. Members will only excavate archaeological sites using professionally accepted procedures developed in consultation with a professional archaeologist and with the written permission of the landowner. The investigator has the responsibility for publication of the result of his/ her investigation and for making the collection available for further scientific study. 3. Members will report archaeological sites to the Office of the State Archaeologist on State Survey forms. Materials noted on the surface of site shall be cataloged and described in the site survey report and they will only be collected if a Collection Permit is in place. Collected materials should be deposited with the State Archaeologist's Office or other responsible repository and made available for scientific study. 4. Members will not support illegal or unscientifically conducted activities by participating in or condoning the sale, exchange or purchase of artifacts obtained from such sites. 5. Members who exhibit artifacts will do so in an educational context. Items from burials and objects considered sacred will not be exhibited. 6. Members will cooperate with the State Archaeologist and other persons and agencies concerned with archaeology and related fields. 7. Members will respect the dignity of groups whose cultural histories is the subject of archaeological investigation. 8. Contact the Craig Chamber of Commerce for an info packet The Craig Annual Symposium will be held at the Center of Craig located at 1601 Yampa Ave. Monte Vista, Jan Gorski January 2007 Board Meeting Highlights Terry & Sharon Murphy hosted the January 2007 Board Meeting at their lovely home in Castle Rock. The minutes from the prior meeting were approved and Mike Maselli provided a treasurer s report from Denis Boon. Peter Faris gave an update on the Archival activities up at CSU in Fort Collins. Suzi Martinueau provided status on the new website. Discussion about adding the CRAA charter ensued. Terry Murphy offered to look for CRAA historical information to add to the website. The board agreed to upload as much info about the symposium as possible including self-guided tour info. Accolades to Suzi on the website! Anne is putting together a binder to include items such as the bylaws, mission statement, minutes, and other articles of significance to CRAA to be passed along to future CRAA secretaries. Volume 3, Issue 2 Several board members have been meeting with Larry Loendorf and local ranchers to work the details on recording projects for this fall. Speakers will be selected by April 10th. Details of the symposium were discussed and many action items were recorded. Contact Charlotte Faris to help with refreshment breaks! A silent auction is planned. Please plan to bring your donation items to the meeting. Jan Gorski will be the chair for this event. An annual picnic will be initiated at the Cortez Field Trip in September. Members are asked to bring a potluck dish to share. Peter Faris & Teresa Weedin are working nominations for next year s CRAA Board. Several openings need to be filled. Please help support your organization!
