1 The CAS Surveyor Newsletter of the Colorado Archaeological Society Historical Archaeology in Colorado and Now the Rest of the Story Hi Friends, I hope you are having a great summer traveling, relaxing, and perhaps getting a little work done as well. For me, the summer has passed too quickly, and I am busy getting ready for the fall semester at Colorado State U and a new batch of students. Lately I ve been reading up on historic archaeology in Colorado and urge our membership to take up the interest as well. A great volume titled Colorado History: A Context for Historical Archaeology was published last year by the Colorado Council of Professional Archaeologists ( It s a fantastic book, containing great references to the archaeology of the last two hundred years what has been done and what remains to be done. I ve noticed in visiting and working across eastern Colorado that 19th century sites are particularly at risk for loss, especially those associated with the Indian War era. Metal detector enthusiasts have been collecting battlefields and camps for at least the last couple of decades (i.e. Fred Werner), and our knowledge of these places is quickly fading with the physical deterioration of the sites themselves as well as the collecting. Some sites, such as the Sand Creek Massacre (now a National Historic Site), have been the subject of recent work. But much remains to be done, in the archives as well as the field. This got me thinking about the upcoming OCTA (Oregon-California Trail Association) National Meeting, which will be held in Loveland next year in August 2009 ( The convention will bring hundreds of trail enthusiasts to northern Colorado, to hear and see presentations on the trails of Colorado, such as the Cherokee, Overland, and Smoky Hill, among others. Many of us know of Bill Buckle s past contributions to the study of the Santa Fe Trail -- the OCTA conference might be a great catalyst for CAS members to get involved in a new generation of historical archaeology. Give it a thought and let s talk about it. There are a handful of professional archaeologists working on the historic period in Colorado, take a look at their work if you haven t already. CAS has always been a great advocate for the prehistoric record in the state, so let s stay active working with our sister organizations towards the preservation of the historic record the rest of the story. See you soon in Montrose (and in Laramie at the Plains Conference too!) Richard enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and especially his grandson, Dick, with whom he spend many hours hunting arrowheads and working on the ranch. Even though his health prevented him from getting out during the last couple of years, he kept a good attitude and kept busy writing history and documenting the history of the Louden Ranch. Richard had many serious accidents during his life, but never considered himself handicapped. Briefly edited by Jason LaBelle from obituary posted at: Rock Art Educational Event By Eileen Gose On May 2nd, students at La Junta Intermediate School learned about the preservation of rock art. This event was held in conjunction with the Colorado Rock Art Association s 2008 Annual Symposium. Eleven volunteers from around Colorado met to provide this enrichment experience. The lessons came from the Rock Art Legacy Trunk that belongs to the Southeastern Colorado Heritage Center in Pueblo. To start the event, the four 3rd grade classes met as a group to see a PowerPoint presentation to learn about rock art what it is, how it was made, what it could possibly mean, and most importantly, how they could help protect it. Next, the students returned to their classrooms where the volunteers guided them in a hands-on activity to enhance the lessons they learned. Finally, each student was given a 2008 Archaeology and Historic Preservation Poster and each 3rd grade teacher was given Dr. Larry Loendorf s book and video about rock art in the area. Back row: Ken Frye, Dick Sundstrom, Anne Whitfield, Eileen Gose, Kathy DeHerrera, Julie Tipton. Kneeling: Jan Gorski, Kate Hogue, Betsy Weitkamp, Pat Williams. Photographer: Dawn Caillouet The teachers and students were very pleased with the event, and the volunteers felt they had made a real difference those ninety-one students learned to appreciate rock art and hopefully will do their part in protecting this fragile cultural resource.

Chapter will be seeking clarification regarding Office of State Archaeology and OAHP rules regarding public access to these Archival materials, including rock art site locations. Vermillion - Due to the past fires in Browns Park, some of the rock art at the Raftopoulos Rock Art site has been covered with soot. CAS should consider obtaining grants to provide restorative work at the site in order to preserve this excellent site. Colorado Rock Art - Ken Frye (USFS) is involved in a site stewardship program in the San Luis Valley; Anne Whitfield is involved in a site stewardship program in SE Colorado, at the Picketwire Canyon site; Carol Paterson has been involved in a site program at a Shavano Valley site. PICKETWIRE- Colorado Rock Art Association (CRAA) completed Picketwire Monitoring Project #6 in Picketwire Canyon on the SE side of Purgatory River. Fifteen CRAA members volunteered to monitor a site recorded in 1994 by the Forest Service. The crew digitally photographed 53 previously recorded rock art panels and recorded 12 new panels overlooked in the original survey. Participants noted damage to panels from erosion or vandalism. The crew worked their way back and forth over a rocky hillside beside the Purgatory River all day Saturday and through most of Sunday. Three teams were at work, each with a photographer, a recorder, and one or more scouts. Session #6 was a recordbreaking session for largest number of panels at a site, greatest number of new panels found on a site, identification of a new site extension, two flat tires, no rattlesnakes, and two-thirds of crew first-timers. Session # 7 will be scheduled in fall The Picketwire sites are treasures which are part of every American s non-renewable cultural heritage. They are documented and protected by the U. S. Forest Service. The canyon, located south of La Junta in the Comanche National Grasslands. Many people do make the long hike in to enjoy the beauty of the canyon, the extensive dinosaur tracks, and the rock art.
