About the campaign underway to protect the 220,000 acre Thompson Divide area southwest of Carbondale from oil and gas development. There will be a short film highlighting the need to protect this area, maps and pictures of the area, talk about the broad coalition (including cowboys and conservationists) that is Unified for Thompson Divide, and discuss Wilderness Workshop s ongoing effort to ensure that this special area remains intact from oil & gas development.
2 CMC WINTER XC & DOWNHILL SATURDAY JANUARY 11, 2014 The best XC in the state, on top of Grand Mesa at County Line, Maintained by the Grand Mesa Nordic Council. With no trail fees, unlike most other XC areas in the state of Colorado. CMC members XC ed Loop 3 to the Overlook where the views of Mt. Sneffels, the San Juans the West Elks, and Lone Cone were NOT obscured by smog, then around to Tower and the Dog Loop and back to the TH. Distance 9 K. Members included Terry Randall and Friend Steve from Montrose, Plus Allan Conrad, Babs Schlermer and XC Leader Carolyn Emanuel. Sadly, Jack was not able to come with us as his hips were hurting. 3 CMC WINTER HIKES Saturday January 25, 2014 Rustler s Loop. 5.5 miles. Leader: Stanley Nunnally. This outstandingly scenic bench loop is usually packed with Mountain Bikers but this Saturday on a snowy, Bluebird day, there were none. Only the 9 CMC hikers who reveled in the majesty of the Colorado River and the snow covered red canyon country. CMC members included Leader Stanley Nunnally, Kim Warthan, Doug Underhill, Rick and Carolyn Emanuel, Babs Schlermer, Allan Conrad Rachel Madiema and guest Mikayla. Plus Luke the Great Dane. 4 Richard was an avid CMC member since high school. He climbed all the 14ers plus some 13,000ers and in May 1961 he reached the summit of Denali via the West Buttress route. As one of the first NPS Rangers and early climbers to summit Denali, he was assigned by Secretary of the Interior Walter Hickel to head up an Advisory Committee to protect federal lands in Alaska following statehood. In 1970 he urged NPS Director George Herzog to see what was at stake in Alaska. By 1974 Stenmark s knowledge was used by the Senate and House in developing legislation for proposed national interest lands. He was instrumental in the expansion of McKinley s boundaries to include the southern side and the glaciers radiating from the mountain as well as other mountains in the Alaska Range. Richard s knowledge and energy resulted in the newly expanded Alaska National Parks under ANILCA. President Carter signed it into law in He is survived by his wife Helen who is a CMC Western Slope Member. Highway 550 Closed Indefinitely Highway 550 at the Uncompahgre Gorge is closed indefinitely for all you XC skiers who want to go to Ironton Park. CDOT does not have an estimated time to reopen the area that was buried by a rockslide. End of the Trail Richard Stenmark June 5, 1931-December 23, 2013 Richard was born and raised in South Denver. He graduated from Colorado A&M College (CSU TODAY) with a degree in Forest Management. After serving with the 27 th Infantry Regiment, he began a 37 year career as a National Park Ranger in Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Teton NP, Sequoia NP, Kings Canyon NP and Yosemite. His last 19 years as a Ranger were spent at Mt. McKinley National Park (today s Denali) where he retired in 1989 as Deputy Regional Director of the Alaska Region NPS. DATES: TBD This course follows a standardized program through the Emergency Care and Safety Institute and consists of 8 hours of lectures, 8 hours of practical training, a written test, and practice scenarios. A comprehensive textbook is included in the fee. People who fully participate and pass the exam earn a 16 hour WFA certification. Saturday, and Sunday, 9 am-5 pm each day Lectures and Practical scenarios.
