8 Nightshades are often thought of as very poisonous plants, but tomatoes, eggplants, and potatoes are all part of the nightshade family. You can buy jam infused with sand from the Great Pyramid in Giza, Egypt. There are close to 400 lakes under the ice in Antarctica, including one with an area nearly as big Fun Page as North America s Lake Ontario. Giant crystals as long as a school bus can be found 1,000 feet underground in Mexico s cave of crystals. There is a device created by two students from George Mason University that uses sound waves to put out fires. If Earth were the size of a grain of sand, the sun would be the size of an orange.
9 How Do I Enter My 4-H Project in the Boone County Fair? Who is eligible to enter 4-H projects in the Boone County Fair? You must be an enrolled Boone County 4-H member as of June 1st of the current year to enter projects in the Boone County Fair. Watch the 4-H newsletter to see when 4-H fair passes will be available. You will need these passes to enter the fairgrounds free of charge and to register your fair entries. What 4-H projects may I enter in the fair? Eligible projects are ones made after the fair last year. The Boone County Fair catalog explains what categories and units you may enter. Check the overall 4-H rules as well as the rules for each specific division. If you need clarification call, to speak to a 4-H representative. How do I enter my 4-H project in the Boone County Fair? Entries will be taken in the Lutes Floral Hall on the fairgrounds on Monday, August 8, from 11 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (crops, fruits & vegetables, & honey are entered a different day/time see fair catalog). No projects will be accepted after 4:00 p.m. How are my 4-H projects judged? In 4-H, we use the Danish System of judging. In this system, each exhibitor is recognized for his or her efforts and accomplishments. Each exhibit is considered in comparison with the ideal and is evaluated and awarded a ribbon as follows: Blue means excellent, Red means good, and White means fair. Thus, each entry is accorded a rating based on how it compares to the ideal or standard, not in competition or comparison with other entries. After all individual ribbons are awarded, the individual Comparison System is used to consider each blue ribbon entry in comparison with other blue ribbon entries. From that group, first, second and third place winners are determined. Entries qualifying for State Fair will have a sticker displayed on their ribbon. Please note that State Fair rules determine what each county is allowed to bring as entries. You may contact the extension office at for more details. Please be aware that some categories are county level only and do not advance to the State Fair. Educational programs of Kentucky Cooperative Extension serve all people regardless of race, color, age, of Agriculture, and Kentucky Counties, Cooperating. Disabilities accommodated with prior notification.
10 What happens with the 4-H projects after they are judged? Once items are judged they will be arranged in a display. All entries will remain on display in Cloverville during the fair week. When do I get my 4-H projects back? All items, except those selected to go to the state fair, must be picked up in Cloverville located in the Lutes Floral Hall on Sunday, August 14, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. If you cannot pick up your project on that day, ask a friend or relative to do so for you. Projects not picked will be taken to the extension office and held until September 30; they will be discarded after that date. My 4-H project is going to the State Fair...what do I need to do? Nothing really, unless you have a food item. You should prepare a duplicate item and bring it to Cloverville at the fairgrounds on Sunday, August 14 by 3:00 p.m. Those items and all the other State Fair bound entries will be boxed-up by 4-H staff and taken to Louisville. Your entry may be required to have additional paperwork. If you are unsure, please check with Steve Conrad to make sure 4-H has everything necessary for your project. When will I get my State Fair items back? State Fair projects should be available for pickup at the extension office on Tuesday, August 30. Office hours are from 8:00 a.m-5:30 p.m, Monday through Friday. Items will be held until September 30. After that date they will be discarded. How do I collect my prize premiums? Prizes receiving first, second, or third place are awarded money. If you have prize money coming, you may collect your check from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 14, at the Lents Building/ Fair office, the small green building straight back from the front gates. After Sunday, checks may be collected at the extension office.
