Register for the Club meetings, and activities, that have registration dates by calling or ing Paperwork: Update, or complete, your 4-H paperwork - 4-H Enrollment Form and 4-H Medical Form (this paperwork will be good through April 2014). 2 Ages 5-8 This is a co-ed 4-H group for children ages 5 8. Join us for hands on experiences about the four H's - head, heart, hands, and health. Meets the first and third Wednesday of every month. Date: Wednesday, June 5 Program: Fairies and Woodland Folk - stories and art related to "little people" Time: 3:34pm-5:30pm Date: Wednesday, June 19 Program: Local Foods & Farm Visit - Picnic lunch with local foods emphasis, 1:00 Visit a farm to see food and animals. Time: 12:00-5:00pm Location: TBD Transportation: provided in 4-H van or on your own Date: Wednesday, July 3 Program: Cloverbud Field Day we ll have fun physical activities and races such as running, egg/spoon, long jump, and Frisbee toss. Ribbons will be awarded. Time: 3:45pm 5:00pm Location: Jackson County Recreation Center, Cullowhee Date: Wednesday, July 17 Program: Bee Creative We ll become a buzzing beehive of activity as we create art out of wax and learn about bees. Bee ready to use your imagination and creativity! Time: 3:45pm 5:00pm Date: Wednesday, August 7 Program: 4-H County Fair Workshop make something to enter in the Jackson County 4-H Fair. How about doing some drawing? Painting? Maybe you d like to create a shoebox float. Arts & Crafts supplies will be available for you to create something wonderful. Time: 3:45pm 5:00pm Date: Wednesday, August 21 Program: Step Back in Time visit the lost skill of hand sewing and play with some old timey toys. Time: 3:45pm 5:00pm

3 Ages 9-16 Join us to explore the great outdoors. We go outside most club meetings. Learn to identify trees, plants, and flowers, protect planet earth, and complete a community service project. Meets the second and fourth Monday of every month. Date: Sunday, June 9 Monday, June 10 Program: Overnight Campout learn about nature at night with a hike and star gazing. We ll also have a campfire and enjoy more outdoor experiences on Monday. 4 Ages 9-12 SUMMER 4-H CLUB We ll join youth nationwide who are getting active in the First Lady Michelle Obama s Let s Move program. Learn about gardening, help staff a 4-H booth at the Sylva Farmer s Market, learn about local foods, try some cooking, get active, spend time outdoors and spend a day at an Alpaca farm in Banner Elk. Meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Dates: Saturdays, June 1, 8 & 15 Program: Farmer's Market 4-H Booth provide a kids activity, information about kids gardening, and 4-H Time: 9:00am - 12:00 noon Location: Bridge Park, downtown Sylva Leader: Heather Gordon Transportation: on your own Registration: sign up for dates and time blocks, or entire morning, by May 31 Date: Thursday, June 13 Program: Farm to Table where in the world does our food come from, learn about local foods and visit farms in our community. Time: 9:00am 5:00pm Location: meet at the Community Service Center then travel by 4-H van as needed Leader: Heather Gordon Date: Thursday, June 27 Program: Get Active with hula hoops, Frisbees, and more! 5 Let's Move - continued... Date: Thursday, August 15 Program: Visit Apple Hill Farm, Banner Elk, NC. We ll see what they re growing and visit with the Alpacas, goats and other animals Time: 9:00am 5:00pm Cost: $5 per person, families invited Location: meet at the Community Service Center then travel about 2 hours by 4-H van to Banner Elk Leaders: Heather Gordon and personal vehicles for families, payment due August 1 Dream. Serve. Change. This group of 9 th -12 th graders in Jackson County is learning leadership skills and applying them to making a change in our community. This program is supported by a generous grant from the Cherokee Preservation Foundation. 6 GSM NATIONAL PARK DAY AT CATALOOCHEE Grab your passport, not the one to leave the county, but your National Park Passport and go with Haywood County Extension 4-H to Cataloochee! In 1910 over 1,200 people lived in this lovely mountain valley. These folks made their living farming and surviving from the land. 4-Hers will view wildlife including deer, elk, and turkey; as well as homes and barn structures from the time period. 4-Hers will walk trails, eat watermelon, and pitch horseshoes or corn hole, play in the creek and enjoy a beautiful day as Appalachian kids would have over 100 years ago. Date: Tuesday, June 11 Time: 10:00am to 4:00pm Ages: 6 to 18 (families are encourage to attend) Location: National Park Leader: Heather Gordon, 4-H Agent GEM MINING Let s venture on over to Franklin and see if we can strike it rich! Spend the morning looking for priceless gems at the Mason Mountain Mine. In the afternoon we will have a picnic lunch, visit the Gem Museum and Historical Museum and then cool off in the water feature at the playground, or take a walk on the Greenways trail. Date: Thursday, June 20 Time: 10:00am 5:00pm Ages: ages 5-18, families are welcome to join us Cost: $6 per person (two buckets of dirt) Location: Franklin, NC and on your own Leader: Heather Gordon, 4-H Agent CHEROKEE CULTURE DAY Come and have fun in the sun and water at the Cherokee Island Park. Possible activities include: storytelling, traditional games, and traditional dances. Date: Thursday, July 18 Time: 10:30am 3:00pm Ages: 8-14 Location: Cherokee Island Park

7 Would you like to perform on an instrument or sing a song? It s time to register for the second Youth Talent Contest of the year to be held in Franklin. You can compete for prize money by age in the following categories: Vocal, Dance, Instrumental and Poetry/Prose/Storytelling. All performances need to showcase the music and stories of the WNC mountains. Find the entry forms at (under 4-H Youth Development) or Date: Saturday, July 20 Time: 1:15pm -2:15pm Ages: All Ages Cost: free Location: Franklin, NC Leader: Heather Gordon Registration: Entry forms due to Cooperative Extension by July 12 at 5:00pm "BE YOUR BEST SELF" FOR GIRLS This all day event for teens will include advice from professionals and a keynote speaker to get you fired up! Come get hair and makeup tips, a spa nail treatment, eat a healthy lunch and attend workshops on self confidence, and how to live a healthy life. Also learn about choosing clothes for different events and activities and how to look your best. Date: Wednesday, July 24 Time: 9:00am - 4:00pm Ages: 13-18, girls Cost: $8 Location: TBA Transportation: on your own Registration: by July 15 WEST DISTRICT TEEN CAMP Feeling adventurous? You'll love these three days of activities such as ropes course, team building, swimming, leadership workshops, Asheville Tourists baseball game, and more! Date: July Time: 9:00am- 3:00pm Ages: Cost: $150 (scholarships may be available) Location: Swannanoa 4-H Center Transportation: On your own

8 ASHEVILLE TOURISTS BASEBALL GAME 4-H NIGHT Join 4-H members from across Western NC for a baseball game and celebration of 4-H! Wear your 4-H t-shirt and show your support for the Tourists team. Free pizza for the kids plus games and the 4-H clover highlighted on the scoreboard. Bring your whole family for some summertime fun. Date: Monday, July 29 Time: 7:00pm game time Cost: $5 per person Location: McCormick Field, Asheville, NC or families may drive on their own Leader: Heather Gordon, 4-H Agent Registration: by July 15 JACKSON COUNTY 4-H FIELD DAY Participate in fun physical activities and races with 4-Hers from across WNC. There will be 3 legged races, running races, egg/spoon race, watermelon seed spitting, long jump, and Frisbee toss as well as some large group games. Ribbons will be awarded. Date: Thursday, August 1 Time: 10:00am - 3:00pm Ages: 9-13 Location: Jackson County Recreation Center, Cullowhee Leader: Heather Gordon, 4-H Agent Transportation: on your own Registration: by July 15 FONTANA FUN DAY Get to know other 4-Hers from across the West District while we hang out at the pool, eat some ice cream, and enjoy other activities at Fontana Village. Date: Thursday, August 8 Time: 10:00am - 4:00pm Ages: 10 and up Cost: $12 Location: Fontana Village, Robbinsville, NC Transportation: on your own Leader: Heather Gordon, 4-H Agent Registration: by July 15

9 JACKSON COUNTY 4-H FAIR Won t you enter something in the 4-H Fair? Entries will be judged in age groups in various categories such as art, decorated potato, baked goods, garden vegetables, decorated cupcakes, and recycled art. Ribbons will be awarded for 1 st and 2 nd place in addition to participant ribbons for everyone. The 4-H Fair will be held at the Bridge Park Pavilion in conjunction with the Saturday Farmer s Market. Watch for entry forms in the June newsletter. Date: Saturday, August 17 Time: 10:00am 12:00pm, 11:00 Animal Show (dogs, cats, chickens, goats, hamsters, etc) Ages: 5-18 Location: Bridge Park Pavilion, Sylva, NC Deadline: Entries are due at the Cooperative Extension Office by August 14 Details: Entries submitted for the 4-H County Fair may be entered in the Mountain State Fair later in the month. Entry Categories: Artwork Recycled Art Photography Things That Grow (flowers, garden vegetables) Animal Show (dogs, cats, chickens, goats, hamsters, etc) Baked Goods Decorated Cupcakes Decorated Potato SCOTT HOGSED YOUTH CONSERVATION & EDUCATION DAY A full day of learning about outdoor activities centered around hunting, fishing, and conservation. Try your hand at archery, learn from hunting experts, learn about outdoor safety, and have a meal featuring wild game. While youth attend learning experiences adults are welcome to set up a lawn chair and relax in the shade.
