1 Barb Wyllie ~ Editor Please From send The submissions Governors to Chai Barb at: Deadline: 20 th of the month From the Governor s Desk 2Pg. 1 March is - Literacy Month The other day as I was heading back home from a rotary meeting, I got to thinking, what is the single most important attribute a Rotarian should possess. So, I started to examine some common Rotary descriptions we use to describe organization: We all know there is: Rotary's 4-Way Test...of the things that we think, say, and do Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it be BUILD GOODWILL and FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Then there is our Motto: SERVICE ABOVE SELF Then there is the: Object of Rotary The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian s personal, business, and community life; FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. And finally I looked at our avenues of service to see how we serve our communities: Avenues of Service Club Service Vocational Service Community Service International Service New Generations This was certainly not an exhaustive search, but enough to give me an idea of a common trend in characteristics of Rotarians that I have had the opportunity to meet and work with for many years. It seemed to me that the need to give back to society was that attribute which is common and in my estimation the most important for a Rotarian to possess; maybe not a startling revelation to you, but one that reminded me why I am a Rotarian because this is an association with people who care and therefore are a gift to the world. It doesn t get any better. In addition, remember that March is Literacy Month for Rotary just think of how many programs we have in our own district. What does your club do for literacy and how can it do more? Have a great month! DG Milan *** Meeting Location Change *** Starting on Tuesday April 12 th, Hudson Shores Rotary will be meeting at the Purple Pub, 2 Cohoes Road in Watervliet with lunch starting at 12:15 pm. 4 Southern Rensselaer Rotary Club Experiences a Record Breaking Induction of New Members In what was a record-breaking induction of new members, the Southern Rensselaer County Rotary Club on February 4 literally increased its size by onethird. Eleven new Rotarians were officially welcomed in a special dinner ceremony at Quigley s Restaurant in East Greenbush, emceed by club president Terry Brewer with the assistance of board member Jim Leyhane. Also participating were Rotary District 7190 Governor Milan Jackson and Immediate Past District Governor Dave Hennel. And, also on hand to represent the district and welcome the newcomers were Assistant District Governor Bob Van Alstine and District Membership Chair Jennifer Hendricks-Fogg. This was the largest one-time induction of new Rotarians by the Southern Rensselaer County Club, which has worked for 56 years to support and enhance organizations throughout the community. And, it also is believed to be the largest in the annals of the sprawling District 7190 and its 41 individual clubs. Those clubs are among the 35,000 worldwide that form Rotary International, a 1.2 million member volunteer organization working in many fields to improve the world and its people among them, education, health, leadership, literacy, individual rights, ecology, entrepreneurship, and disaster relief. The new local Rotarians: Melissa Bell, First Niagara Bank branch manager Michael Bennett, asst. superintendent, Schodack Central School District Michael Dewey, financial consultant Robert Horan, superintendent, Schodack Central School District Mario Kosikar, attorney at law Andrew Leyhane, chemist, AMRI: Albany Molecular Research Inc. James McHugh, principal, Bell Top Elementary School, East Greenbush John Sawchk, principal, Columbia High School, East Greenbush Matthew Smith, doctor of physical therapy, Albany Medical Center David Taylor, USAF retired Josh Wainman, Wainman Construction Inc. Shenendehowa Rotary is celebrating over fifty years as a service organization changing and saving lives in our community, through our professions, and throughout the world. Shenendehowa Rotary meets every Thursday morning at 7:15 AM for breakfast at Coburg Village at the intersection of Grooms and Vischer Ferry Roads in Clifton Park. For additional information, contact Bill Dowd at or SRCrotary@gmail.com Photo on page 17. Pope Frances Against Polio In the above photo, Pope Frances is immunizing a child in Mexico against polio. While we realize that Rotary doesn t support any religions, rest assured that having a world leader administering the vaccine provides awareness that the disease still exists, that something is being done about it and that children still need to be vaccinated until we can declare the world polio free. 7 Rotary Youth Exchange Student and Host Family Make Life Long Bond Thirty years ago Bodil Fogh Peterson Hansen came to Scotia to spend her Senior year in High School as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student. Bodil spent a totally engaged year in school, social, and personal life. As part of our extended family Bodil vacationed with us in Myrtle Beach, where it seems everyone from Scotia goes. She immersed herself in everyday tasks, and truly became a member of our family. But her time as a Tartan didn t end with her return to Denmark. The following year and other countless times she came back to Scotia, including once for our Son s wedding with her husband Jorgen. She has returned other times with her husband and even her Mom and Dad. Bodil had come to know our home so well she requested for Patty and I to, as she said, "come to my country. We went to Denmark and enjoyed Bodil and Jorgen's hospitality. We traveled all over Denmark and immersed ourselves in her life, visiting their family as well. It was truly a wonderful vacation and an experience that we will remember forever. We have exchanged gifts every Christmas for thirty years. But a week before Christmas 2015, a communication needed to occur that no one wants to make to their family. I needed to make a call to Bodil telling her Patty had treatable but not curable cancer. Over the next three weeks we kept Bodil and Jorgen updated. They were planning to return to Scotia in March for a visit with all of us. It was at that time that we conveyed to Bodil that Patty was not going to be with us in March. It was a fact none of us wanted to believe, but it was a truth that needed to be shared. For Patty was going home under Hospice Care and had one to two weeks to live. Bodil left on the first available flight, and was with us back at our Scotia home fifteen hours later. Her arrival blew Patty away, and her last days were filled with love, compassion, and memories of times shared over our 30 years of shared life. The life you live, the choices you make, the path you choose, all make your life. Shared life experiences are what make a family. Times, good and bad, are what make life worth living. Our family is so blessed to have Bodil, Jorgen, and their family be part of ours. Our family s love for Bodil and her husband is never ending.
