Page 5 RAHS Excursion: Visit to the Australian National Maritime Museum Thursday 18 May, 11am 12.15pm at Australian National Maritime Museum, 2 Murray Street, Sydney Cost: $15 The Australian National Maritime Museum is Australia s national centre for maritime collections, exhibitions, research and archaeology. It was planned and built more than 20 years ago as part of the massive Darling Harbour and Pyrmont redevelopment. The museum was the site s showpiece and remains the Australian government s most visible national cultural institution in Sydney. Getting there: If you are coming from Central you can catch the light rail to the Pyrmont Bay stop, which is located directly opposite the museum. Itinerary: 11.00am Arrive at the Museum; 11.15am Guided Tour of the Permanent Galleries and the destroyer Vampire led by one of the Museum s Volunteers. RAHS/NAW Tour: Central Park, Broadway Evolution from fresh water creek and brewery to high-end urban village Sunday 21 May, 3pm 4pm, meet outside the Old Clare Hotel Cnr. Kensington Street and Broadway, Chippendale Cost: $10 Central Park is a 2 billion dollar urban development situated on the site of the former Carlton and United Brewery, which represents the last of the major city breweries to survive in New South Wales. The site s rich historical period, spanning over 200 years, includes expansion from a fresh water creek running through shrubs and sand dunes via the city s first Military Gardens to an important industrial and residential site. The layout and some of the components of the site, including buildings and industrial fit-out, are still preserved and incorporated into the modern urban complex. This one-hour walking tour will provide an insight into the site s rich and layered history, and changing relationship to its surrounding urban and suburban contexts. The tour will finish with a drink at the Old Clare Hotel. Tour leader Anita Yousif is currently employed as Senior Associate and Historical Archaeology Team Leader with one of Australia s leading heritage consultancies Extent Heritage, Sydney Office. Anita s extensive experience in archaeology and heritage management spans over 20 years of professional work.
