President Chris assumed the role of Chairman for the evening and invited Rotarian Geoff Wilson from Carindale Club to address the Club. District Governor Phillip Charles is inviting your club to a special breakfast meeting from 7.00 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 25th, It will be held in the conference centre of the Brisbane Technology Park, Miles Platting Road, Eight Mile Plains, on Brisbane s Southside. Cost is only $20 a person. The aim is to promote Rotary membership in a big way. The special Guest Speaker will be Anna Robbie who will tell us about three new BTP (Business and Technology Precincts) in Brisbane. Anna Robbie will inform District 9360 Rotarians about three BTP business and technology precincts now being integrated by her employer, Graystone Pty Ltd. Phillip will also comment on the prospect our District 9630 has of increasing membership among the executives employed by BTP precinct companies.

Two club officials are invited: The Club President and the club Membership Officer. Other Rotarians can attend if they wish. The precincts are potential sources of many new Rotary members for at least (eventually) 30 District 9630 clubs plus clubs in District The three Business and Technology precincts are: Brisbane Technology Park precinct at Eight Mile Plains currently housing 137 companies and an estimated 2,500 executives. BTP Westlink Green at Darra two buildings are complete with a further 20,000 square metres to be completed within 5 years of the first stage. BTP Northshore precinct at Hamilton. The first building has been completed and a further 60,000 square metres is to be brought on in the next five years. Each precinct is under the building development of Brisbane-based Graystone Pty Ltd. Anna is contributing to the development of each new Business and Technology Precinct. She has a particular focus on securing lease tenure and design and construction opportunities. With expertise in project marketing, Anna coordinates all advertising, branding and public relations for Graystone and associated entities. Graystone has more than 30 years of property experience throughout South East Queensland, and has earned an enviable reputation for producing exceptional commercial and industrial precincts. Graystone is unique. With integrated services, the company has gained a reputation operating mostly in South-East Queensland. The company provides end-to-end business solutions for businesses wishing to relocate their corporate and technical requirements. Anna said: Most of our project pipeline has come from repeat business, with many of our clients making advancement in technology and innovation not necessarily prescribed to an industry segment. The diversification and evolving nature of these businesses make them perfect candidates for our precincts, and our long-term approach in providing flexible workspaces. She will explain the BTP Precincts and their chosen locations across Brisbane. Brisbane Technology Park will soon accommodate 150 businesses. On completion the three precincts are expected to include more than 300 businesses employing about 10,000 executives. That s a big opportunity! DG Phillip Charles will explain membership recruitment plans to help BTP memberships for at least 30 Rotary clubs of District He will also outline the club opportunity in two proposed District 9630 special Membership Promotion Events at BTP Eight Mile Plains on Wednesday, February 11th, Please register with me your club s participation at the November 25th breakfast at BTP Eight Mile Plains conference centre. Yours in Rotary, Geoff Wilson, Rotary Club of Carindale, Mobile: or wilson.geoff@optusnet.com.au

Footnote from Geoff to accompany the above article: Here s the news item on our District 9630 speaker Anna Robbie, which I promised to send you tonight for an article in the Wynnum and Manly newsletter. I m expecting about 50 Rotarians at the November 25th District 9630 breakfast meeting. The major event, however, is the February 11th luncheon/dinner presentations - where we will have two main speakers, plus a display table for each participating Rotary Club of District The target audience is about 2,500 executives of the well-established BTP Eight Mile Plains precinct of science and technology companies. Over the next five years I expect there to be membership prospects for Wynnum and Manly from the new BTP at Darra and the new BTP at Hamilton - when some 300 companies - possibly employing about 10,000 executives will be in prospect in the three BTP precincts over the next five of more years. President Chris reminded all present that this Club is very keen to establish A Friend of Rotary using Facebook. He invited anyone who is interested in helping Rotary but not being a full member to go on Facebook and see what s involved. Community Service Director, Dave Warren, advised the Club that the next Adopt a Road Scheme Clean-up will be held on Sunday 14th December commencing at 7.00 a.m. and concluding with Morning Tea at around 9.30 a.m. Graeme Wescombe gave members an Update on the Garden and ANZAC Centenary Projects by Community Service Teams. At Manly West SS we installed 8 raised vegetable gardens, extensive landscaping, a shade house and an ANZAC memorial garden. At Wondall Hts SS we installed 4 raised vegetable gardens and provided ancillary equipment. We were asked to coordinate a garden project at Tingalpa SS. This project covered the landscaping of 7 gardens. In all cases Bunnings Cannon Hill was the major donor of materials. In March, based on our previous experience with schools, we were asked to consider an application to the ANZAC Centenary Fund for a project. It was decided that we would work with all of the 17 local schools/colleges. We developed a proposal that was supported by 17 schools/ colleges, the local political representatives and the Manly-Lota RSL and associated organisations which would provide an ANZAC Centenary plaque and garden precinct at each institution. The Rotary Board approved the proposal and it was lodged with the local electorate review committee in May. It was approved and sent to Canberra by the end of May. The anticipated timeline was - approval of the project by 1st July and for the funds to be available shortly after.

The Hemmant flexible Learning Centre was one of the 17 schools on the ANZAC Centenary list. The Hemmant SS site was established in 1864 and is the oldest education site operating in Queensland. It was decided that they needed general help with the grounds/gardens. Energex provided a grant of $2000 and Bunnings Cannon Hill have to date, provided/ allocated $1900 for materials and machinery hire. We started work in July/ August. We removed the 15 m high flagpole before it fell down, lopped trees and cleared the front garden site. We had approval to proceed from Youth Plus (the tenant) but for some reason the State Department of Education decided to review the lease. Work was suspended on the front yard, but I was given permission to work on the vegetable garden area. We constructed two raised garden beds with sleepers and installed a water tank before further work was suspended. We had planned to have the project completed for the official opening of the Centre. I had the privilege of attending that official opening of HFLC yesterday, 11th November. It was great to observe and soak in the patience and enthusiasm of the teachers and students. At the official opening I was assured that the lease agreement should be resolved soon. It is hoped that we can complete the work, requiring a bobcat, over the Christmas Holidays. Work on the vegetable gardens can be completed with funds from Bunnings Cannon Hill. At this stage planting will be in the new school year. Current situation re projects: With the co-operation of Bunnings Cannon Hill we have organized materials and new garden beds for Lota SS. Alison has organized funds for materials and the beds were donated by the supplier. ANZAC Centenary Project. We have a letter from the Minister Veteran Affairs advising that $49,000 has been approved and an advising that the full amount of $56,000 has been approved. We are patiently providing paperwork and waiting for the next round of paperwork and approvals from Canberra. We have approval to use the official ANZAC Centenary logo on 17 plaques. The wording of our Centenary plaque has been vetted by local organisations and has been referred to a supplier for a quote/delivery time. The plaque will be comparable in design and layout to the existing LEST WE FORGET plaque. Based on current experience we do not expect the funds before Christmas. This will adversely affect the ordering and supply of plaques, sandstone and plants. At the same time we are proceeding with work on the ANZAC Project. Manly West SS was the original ANZAC memorial site and will up dated as required. At Tingalpa SS we have completed the ANZAC Garden edging with materials from Bunnings and others. At Lota SS we are helping to save an Allepo Pine by relocating it into a new container in the ANZAC Memorial Garden. Due to the 6 month delay, I plan to review all sites and confirm the designs before the schools close for holidays. It is hoped that we can arrange to work at some sites over the holidays.

The experience with State Department of Education has prompted a review of our risk management and insurance. An update of the ANZAC project will be presented to the board on Thursday night. At the conclusion of Graeme s presentation Dave asked for and received an enthusiastic round of applause for the hard work being exhibited by Graeme. Rod Fletcher came forward to the Lectern and commented that at the end of the RYPEN presentation last week the six participants presented the Club with a signed picture of themselves all tied up with a pretty ribbon as an indication of how very happy they were to have been given the opportunity to participate in the RYPEN programme. Rod commented that it is not very often that we are given something like this and it was truly appreciated. Our picture shows the gifts in all its beauty. Moreton Bay College Play The Drama Director Kelly Redhead-Adelt, a woman with professional theatre credentials as well as the top person at MBC, introduced the play. She began by thanking the Club for allowing her small group of twelve Senior Girls. She informed us that it was a Play written by a Brisbane playwright Sally McKenzie and portrays the true life experiences of a number of refugees whom the author had interviewed. They girls have previously performed this play three times and had recently won a competition. Kelly told us that not only did the girls learn their parts but in the process learned a great deal about the people they were portraying. The twelve girls were all dressed in black tops and trousers and their only propos were 12 wooden boxes, a few hats and caps and they very competently presented pictures of us as they each told their particular story. As each story was presented the girls skilfully rearranged the boxes to bring us with them into the place they wanted us to be. Kelly told us that the way that this was organised was a cooperative effort between her and the girls. The Play usually runs for 45 minutes but due to the time constraint of Rotary they limited their performance to 30 minutes. As has been said the author interviewed all the characters so therefore it is assumed that all the characters have made it to Australia.

We were introduced to the German Jew; a Czechoslovakian family attempting to get out into Austria with their two children; a Ukrainian man who when he became very sick relived the horrors of the past; there was the student arriving in our country unable to communicate because they had no English; then there was the gripping story of the young Chilean couple in 1974 trying to escape and eventually having a baby and then there was the drama of boarding a leaking boat; The German who was asked by her Australian neighbour if she would like a paw-paw. She was horrified as this word in German meant arse. Eventually the problem was overcome. The performance was well received and a number of questions were fielded by Kelly. President Chris thanked the cast and Director most sincerely and presented her with our Certificate of Appreciation indicating that 10 under privileged children somewhere in the world would be immunised against polio. The top picture shows President Chris about to hand over the certificate to Kelly while the one on the left shows an excited and happy group of students and their Drama Director Kelly with her Certificate and the girls holding their simple props which they used so efficiently. It was truly an inspiring performance by all the performers. President Chris closed the meeting with the singing of the National Anthem at 8.20 p.m.

This week's PresidenT s musings I Went with PP Dave Warren to Caloundra today to meet with and exchange ideas on Rotary sponsored domestic and family violence initiatives that the Club has undertaken over the years with Dr David Smyth of the Brighton (Victoria). I have had similar exchanges with David previously. I am most impressed with an online interactive training programme for men that is being field trialled currently. It is increasingly obvious that Rotary can help by contributing to building a fence at the top of the cliff that is by helping to bring awareness of the need for respect between the genders by boys and girls in schools. Our task force under Dave s leadership will meet next week to put together its ideas and recommendations to the Board at its December meeting. Others are better equipped (with some assistance from Rotary perhaps) to pick the pieces up at the bottom of the cliff so to speak! May have something further to say about all this at the AGM! Best wishes, Chris Reynolds. Melbourne Cup Trifecta Report Steve Jones We have done it again! We have succeeded in selling all of our Melbourne Cup trifecta tickets in the four weeks leading up to the running of the Cup. This has been achieved by some members taking bundles of tickets and selling them. Those not sold were added to the bundles we had for sale at various locations on the four Saturdays before the race. We sold tickets at Narelle s at Wynnum North, Wynnum Plaza, Leisure Centre and finally in Edith Street. This takes some work and coordination to make it happen and I wish to thank the following club members for their assistance: Chris Reynolds; Harold Parker (who fitted this in whilst he was also organising the Luncheon and also assisted in sale of a number of late returning tickets which came back from another source); our new members Robyn Bunting and Dave Tighe; Dave Warren, Tony Fox, Gordon Walters, Niels Coelingh-Bennink, Nev Harrison, Rod Fletcher, Graham Pearson, Dave Preston, Jim Byrne, Brian Pertzel, Don Poulton and Bill Simpson. Also my dear wife Di who assisted me greatly in folding and stapling with me the 2024 tickets, and also sold tickets at the Plaza. We have made a nett amount of $ after allowing a $ for the prize and $ for cost of obtaining the tickets from Rotary Club of Crow s Nest NSW who supply them. The prize has now been claimed by Mick Donnolly, a local man who bought the ticket from Brian Pertzel. New member Robyn with Steve, set up and ready for customers at the Plaza. This is a great fund-raiser for the club and basically raises as much as the luncheon itself. When coupled together, our fundraising totals approximately $ A great effort from everyone showing the true spirit of Rotary in our Community!

The District Governor s Comments to President Chris and copied to me. Chris would like you all to read what he said about last week s Bulletin. Editor. Just read the Bulletin and the Testimonial s from the RYPEN and Public Speaking Participants. What a buzz. Please pass on my heartfelt congratulations and thanks to all concerned and all the members of the Wynnum and Manly Rotary Club. With the support Wynnum and Manly for Rotary s Youth through these and other programmes our future is assured with the development of future leaders. Just to read their individual speeches knowing they were addressing a large group is a big plus in itself. Again Sincere Thanks and Hearty Congratulations. P.S. Have one more Official Club visit to go next week whew!! What an enjoyable experience amongst a District of truly Dedicated Rotarians giving Service above Self to our community. Keep Safe.
