SOCIAL ELEMENT: Sel was the lucky recipient of the first meal voucher to the value of $113 aimed at members getting groups together for social outings. NYSF: Trish Peddie advised that she is the District convenor for NYSF and asked for a volunteer to travel to Toowoomba with her for an NYSF activity on August 10. COMMUNITY: David Tighe mentioned the Silky Oaks program for parents and carers see above, then ascertained that members were more in favour of running the bbq for the Relay for Life - see above than providing teams more details later. He also reported that the Club is in the process of providing 2 boxes of thermal packs for Meals-on-Wheels.

3 David then mentioned that assistance for a family recently affected by domestic violence had been readily forthcoming within 24 hours of the request for help and that Gordon Walters had been heavily involved. PROBUS: Secretary Rod reported that a number of seats would be available on upcoming Probus trips to Esk, etc., due to a number of Probians travelling on a cruise. DROUGHT SUPPORT: Rod also advised receiving letters of appreciation of our recent assistance to the Downs and West Community Support Group. EXCHANGE STUDENTS YEP PP Tony Fox produced some booklets detailing exchange students hosted by our club since our first involvement in 1963 in PP John Davies year as President. If members have any more details or photos, please let Tony know as these booklets have been compiled with the aid of a number of members. THANKS TO DAMIAN: Thanks to Damian Nolan for his term helping organise Bunnings sausage sizzle. ELIZABETH NOSKE: Thought I hadn t heard I ve been everywhere for a while but Elizabeth has certainly done that! A primary school teacher who holds a Bachelor of Education, a Masters of Education, Executive Master in Neuro Leadership, Elizabeth has a considerable background in Special Education and is specialising in Brain Based Learning. Her father was the only Rotarian in his Club in the western districts of Victoria who held the classification of Primary Producer. Trained in Adelaide, Elizabeth has held appointments in Geelong, Mount Gambier, Surabaya in Indonesia, Europe, Canada, Shanghai, but is currently based at Corinda State High School handling Special Education for the Junior School. Working overseas provided wonderful travel opportunities and also resulted in her doing 10 half marathons in 4 years in China. GUEST SPEAKER NEXT WEEK: Sel advised that the speaker for next week s meeting is Peter Keyte, General Manager Trade Services for the Port of Brisbane. Peter is responsible for managing, developing and improving shipping and landside services in the Port of Brisbane, the operation of the Brisbane Multimodal Terminal (BMT), Port Operations, Port Security, Trade Development, Marketing and Communications, Health and Safety, Emergency Response, and Strategic Projects. Annie Ryan our exchange student in France says Hello everyone! The last month I have been on holidays! And it s been fantastic!

But this wasn t just a holiday- we were there for the wedding of my host s eldest host sister!

The Church ceremony was beautiful with the Church overlooking the sea. The reception was held in the backyard of the holiday house.

! There were many laughs and some amazing speeches and skits for the couple. I feel so lucky to have been able to witness and participate in such a marvellous event!

4 Annie Ryan our exchange student in France says Hello everyone! The last month I have been on holidays! And it s been fantastic! From the 20-30th of June I was at Varengville which is a part of Normandy. My host family have a holiday house there. But this wasn t just a holiday- we were there for the wedding of my host s eldest host sister! It was a really awesome week preparing for the wedding- cooking food, making decorations, practising hymns. It was a magical and massive wedding - over 350 people. The Church ceremony was beautiful with the Church overlooking the sea. The reception was held in the backyard of the holiday house. I say reception because it lasted from lunch to dinner up until 7am the next morning. It all had a very rustic feel to it and the food (which was all homemade during the week) was amazing!! There were many laughs and some amazing speeches and skits for the couple. I feel so lucky to have been able to witness and participate in such a marvellous event! For the rest of my holidays I ve been equally as lucky. I spent a relaxing week at home where I said good bye to all my oldies (the exchange students who came six months before me) and caught up on some sleep (which was well needed after the Eurotour, backed up by a week of wedding shenanigans). After, I went to the centre of France to go to a 60th birthday party. To be honest, I wasn t exactly hyped about the idea of this, but went along obliging with my host parents. Turns out it a beautiful sheep farm in the middle of nowhere and it was a really fun night! From there, the next day I went to St. Jean D Angley, which is around 1.5hrs north of Bordeaux. I was staying with friends of my real family s good friends. The fact that I didn t know them at all before did not hinder my week! It was so much fun.

5 The town was very cute- a quaint, old town. I saw the fireworks for the 14th of July in the centre of town which was great. I visited the surrounding area with the family, including La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Saintes, Cognac (did a tour of a Cognac factory- Remy Martin), had crepes on the beach at Chantallion, as well as working one morning in their Restaurant/Hotel). They were a very hospitable family and they showed me the best of that region. I m having a fantastic time - my French is still pretty poor, but I m getting there. Now I am on holidays until the 1st of September and have lots of fun things planned that I will be sure to tell you about! I ve attached some photos. Thanks for the support. Annie P.S. Thanks for the postcards. REPORT ON TONY FISHER Tony is still undergoing 4 hour sessions of dialysis 3 afternoons a week, still driving himself comfortably to and from hospital. For the present time, activities such as attending Rotary at Shangri-La on Wednesday evenings are not now possible, but I will be back attending regularly as soon as my body allows me. DIK COLLECTIONS/DELIVERY Ken Evans has arranged collections of hospital/nursing and school equipment this Friday morning from Iona College by 9.30 am, Blue Care (Lindum) and Nazareth House, stock to be delivered to DIK at Durack early Saturday morning, departing Shangri-La at 7.00 am. Thanks to those who volunteered.. Lachlan Whitwell (Rotaract President) has also volunteered to assist us on Saturday, to gain a better appreciation of Rotary activities. GARAGE SALE Fundraising Director Steve Jones reminds members to collect all unused furniture, household goods, bric-a-brac, books and puzzles, plants, etc., for the Club s Gragae Sale on August 15 at the Bayside Sea Scouts Hall, Upper Esplanade, Manly. There will be a sausage sizzle not another one! and we also need cakes, etc. for sale. Assistance will be needed for setup from 2 pm on the Friday afternoon and from 5.30 am open from 7 am to 1 pm - on the Saturday. Please let Steve know when and how you can assist. 6 RCWM Golf Tragics Storm the Queensland Open Course! Rotarians are not the only ones who know how to have fun while doing good works. $42,000 was raised for the Foodbank organization via a Golf Day held at the Brookwater Course yesterday, and RCWM was there! With the sponsorship of Shangri La, (many thanks Valmae R!), a scratch team of Rotary golfers took part in the event and inevitably had a great time. Sharp Shooter Schneidewin and Hit and Miss Reynolds rode the range in one cart while the Pertzel Bros got down and dirty in another (Brian The Tryer and brother Graeme The Gun), all lined up and ready to go courtesy the superbly organized staff. After a hearty breakfast and Barista coffee on the house, a gunshot start at a sedate 11:30 am found us moving comfortably from one beautiful hole to the next on the Greg Norman designed Queensland Open course and a super, sunny day. The game was Four Ball Ambrose! And whoever Ambrose was/is, he knows how to get the best out of amateur golfers. Four players hit off and the best ball is the location for the second shot and so on! Easy but, as always with golf, you have to be honest and lucky very lucky! Anyway, while the rest of us fluffed their shots, Graeme the Gun got off to a good start with a couple of pars and a birdie. Happily, his quality play rubbed off on the rest of us and one by one each of us experienced that lift when the club hits the ball sweetly and the ball obligingly moves in the intended direction. Even a few long-distance putts rattled nicely into the cup and it was only when the Tryer started being triumphant at beating his brother that a couple of chips and a drive went badly astray. Fortunately, the drinks cart stopped a couple times to keep the ice-box on each cart supplied with tinnies, the contents of which kept the golfers well lubricated! By this stage also, Sharp Shooter was starting to complain about Hit and Miss s hair-raising cart driving and the odd bump to his tender frame; things got a bit nasty when he took over and reversed several times out of a tight corner into a reluctant rock or two. No harm done, however, and weary from having rescued balls from the rough, the RCWM Scratch team found themselves back at the 19th Hole where further lubrication was provided and raffles drawn and several seriously expensive auctions took place. Fortunately, Ernst and Young and several other deep-pockets were there to raise their hands at the right point in the bidding, although Hit and Miss was sorely tempted by the bottle of 97 Grange Hermitage which fetched $600. Weary golfers drove home up the highway guided by temperamental Tanya and the IPhone! Made it back after 5:30 pm and a day well spent. Oh and don t ask what the team score was unless the acceptable answer 10:10 for fun! C.R.
