1 Monthly Panmure Business Association Newsletter Issue 126 May 2015 ANZAC Day in Panmure - Lest We Forget Chris Sutton, Leon Matthews,Debra Lawson, Gary Holmes

2 If your business lies within the Panmure Mainstreet area (Queens Road, Ellerslie/Panmure Highway and adjacent side streets) you are automatically a Member of Panmure Business Association and are paying.02c in the dollar of your general rates towards funding the Association. How the combined money us spent is determined by elected board members, any of whom would be happy to talk with you, tell you more about who they are and hear your comments or suggestions. Leon Matthews Mt Wellington Panmure RSA (Chairman) Stephen Hall Power Real Estate 78 Queens Road (VC) Brett Clark Maungakiekie- Tamaki Local Board Representative Shelley Katae Redevelopement Company - Co-op Member Rosemary Cosgrove Auckland Council BID Partnership Advisor Gary Davison Dorothy Miles Vinod Ranchhod Sharon Stephens Douglas White Greg Woodcock Salvation Army 159 Queens Road Sugarcrafts NewZealand Ltd Big Broz 95 Queens Road Tamaki Ataahua Early Learning Centre Kiwibank Akl Psychological Associatres Ltd Panmure Business Association services include: Panmure Christmas Parade & Festival, King of the Mountain, Monthly Business Newsletter, CCTV, Graffiti Removal, Security Patrol, Under Veranda Lighting, Tastes of Panmure Promotion,Tamaki Business Breakfast Series, supporting local Community Events Chris Sutton - Town Centre Manager When Mt Wellington/Panmure RSA President and PBA Chairperson, Leon Matthews, first told me of his plan to land a helicopter in the intersection of Queens Rd I laughed and told him that would never be allowed by Auckland Transport and the powers that be! I also asked him who would pay the cost of putting traffic management in place but he brushed my concerns off and doggedly continued with his plan. Two weeks ago I attended a meeting with Leon and the powers that be and was amazed that they all said that it was ok as long as the helicopter pilot was happy which he was. Fortunately ANZAC day dawned fine with only a the lightest of breeze. At precisely 9.42am the twin engine helicopter carrying four Mt Wellington/Panmure RSA veterans descended sideways through the air along Queens Rd from the big roundabout and landed right in the middle of the Pilkington Road and Queens Road intersection. The four veterans who won the ballot to go in the helicopter were delighted with this opportunity especially as the pilot gave them a little tiki tour of Tāmaki before they came into land. The veterans were then driven to the ANZAC service in the Panmure Community Hall in WWII American jeeps. Leon asked the Panmure Business Association to organise some informal traffic management and I would like to thank the Tāmaki Community Patrol, Maungarei Cadets, the Panmure firemen, Lisa and her partner John and my son John who all helped with the traffic management around the intersection as the helicopter landed. On Wednesday 8 April, Lisa and I were invited to the dawn blessing of Te Oro in Glen Innes which was followed by a lovely breakfast at the Ruapotaka Marae. This music and arts centre was asked for by the Glen Innes community in the early 1990 s and it took the new structure of the Supercity to see the idea finally taking shape under the guidance of the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board. Visit to see a list of events that have been planned. Friday the 1 May is the start of our Tastes of Panmure promotion for the whole month of May. Thank you to all the food outlets that are participating in the promotion. Our aim is to continue to focus on Panmure s food outlets as an affordable and flavoursome place to eat out in.

3 Te Oro Blessing At 5.30am on 8 April Chris and I visited the Glen Innes to be part of the blessing ceremony of the new Glen Innes Music and Arts Centre: Te Oro. In this multi-purpose space young people and the local community can come together to perform, practice and learn the arts; express their creativity and talents; and celebrate their cultures. The name Te Oro has been gifted to the centre by Ngāti Paoa with the endorsement of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki and Ngāti Whātua Orakei. Oro is the tonal reverberation or sound within a chamber. Maungarei (Mt Wellington), in its natural state, would contribute this low drone created by the winds moving over its volcanic crater. This natural phenomenon existed before the migration of waka landing in the Tamaki Makaurau region. The name acknowledges how the sounds of nature connect people and place with the past, present and future. Metaphorically, it reflects the voices of the local community and the creation of music and arts that will flow from the centre to the surrounding areas. Local iwi also contributed to the visual expression of Te Oro, which is created from the art of tukutuku. Tapa Toru, the repeated triangular pattern used in Te Oro s typeface, is a reference to Maungarei Mt Wellington. From 23 March the new website was live check it out for up-to-date information about what s on at Te Oro over the coming months. Te Oro will be officially opened on Saturday 9 May. Sergeant Kevin Reynolds was one of many early risers that attended the blessing. Denise Krum elected Councillor for Maungakiekie-Tamaki address the reporters.

4 AMETI - Going Going Gone Security Report Taoa is our Security Officer roving the town of Panmure. Taoa has been looking after our businesses for 12 years. Please don t hesitate to talk to Taoa about any security advice. Taoa is in Panmure Monday to Friday keeping a watchful eye over our town. He is also a Minister of the Congregational Church of Niue. You would have noticed the changing face of the Panmure roundabout. In our December newsletter we congratulated Maurice Burney about his move to their smart new offices at 75 Queens Road. Their old building is currently being demolished in preparation for further AMETI (Auckland Manukau Eastern Transit Initiative) works down Lagoon Drive. Already we have seen the new 1.5km Te Horeta Road linking Morrin Rd to Mt Wellington Highway cutting peak journey times between Mt Wellington and Glen Innes as well as markedly reducing the volume of traffic using the Panmure roundabout. This has also meant faster travelling times for other commuters still using the roundabout. Tuesdays 12 & 26 May Month of May Sunday 10 May DIARY DATES Blue Recycling Bins out for following morning collection Tastes of Panmure Mothers Day REPORTING OF INCIDENTS. It has come to my attention that there have been some serious incidents that have happened that have not been reported to the Police. If there is no Police report then ourselves and the Police are unable to act on these incidents. Often incidents are a prelude to more serious crime so it is important to us and the Police that we do our utmost in supporting each others, you the shopkeepers and the community at large. TROUBLE MAKERS. We are aware that there are young trouble makers in our town. These can involve both girls and boys and they are often in large groups. As with any problems we are powerless to take action unless we are informed of the incident. Likewise it is important we take action sooner than later so that we give young offenders a clear message that negative behaviour in our town will not be tolerated. Please help us help you. I am in the street on a daily basis, as is Lisa, so please take this time to tell us if you have any problems we can assist with. May God continue to bless Panmure and everyone who works and lives here. Fakaue lahi mahaki for all your support Taoa Folekene SAFETY & SECURITY IF IT IS AN EMERGENCY DIAL Call 111 when: Someone is badly injured or in danger. There s a serious risk to life or property. We have a wonderful team of well trained volunteers who are here to help, and have access to huge information resources including a referral database which lists over 35,000 organisations.
