1 DG Geoff s Message It is with great pleasure that I can let all Lions, Lioness and Leos know what Lions Lady Cherie and I have been doing over the past couple of months. Since becoming your District Governor, I have had the great privilege to visit 32 Lions, 5 Lioness and 4 Leo Clubs. I am visiting so many early this Lions. year because I want the opportunity to return to as many as possible to help with their projects an opportunity for me to give back just a small measure of the support and encouragement I have received from the Clubs I have visited so far. MD201 N2 Lions Newsletter Lions Lady Cherie and I decided we would not continue our employment this year so that we could spend more time with the Clubs during our visits. Many of the Clubs have hosted Lions Lady Cherie and myself which has allowed the two of us to meet many of the Lions family at breakfasts and morning coffee away from the usual official visit evening. We have also had the great privilege to see firsthand the many projects the Clubs are undertaking to make the communities in which they live and serve that much stronger. When I was the Zone 10 Chairperson, I received a real buzz. out of the work the Zone clubs were doing, but I am truly overcome by the work of those clubs I have visited so far. Every club is undertaking diverse projects, some in partnership with local government and associations, some alone but all are seen by their communities as an important role for Lions. This year, the District began the year with 1,718 Lions and currently has 1,703, a net loss of 15. I am happy to report though we have a net gain of 9 so far for the month of October, the first time this year, so the signs are encouraging. During my official visits, I have inducted 11 of the 46 new Lions who joined our Association and 26 new Leos. There is little doubt in my mind our District will continue to grow, despite the loss of 61 members so far. Our International President takes every opportunity to speak about what he calls My Club, My Family. Let us all treat each District 201 N2 of the International Association of Lions Clubs Sending the message about lionism DG Geoff Hobart, District Governor Motto: Dare to Serve November 2011 Edition, Issue 2 ISSN (Online) DG Geoff Hobart (right) presenting 1st Conventioneer ribbons to Leos other as if they were members of our family so that we can improve our membership retention rates. On Sunday 28 August, I attended a meeting of the ACT/NSW Save Sight and Public Health Care Foundations in Sydney. This was my first opportunity to see the work of our Foundation up close and I am very impressed at the way things are being done to ensure the best possible outcomes for Lions of the ACT and NSW are being considered. I encourage all clubs to donate to and seek grants for suitable projects from our Foundation. Between 6 and 8 September, I attended the Council of Governors Meeting on the Gold Coast, matters approved included: Exploration of proposals to collaborate with Apex Clubs Australia Adoption of the amended Multiple District Organisational Roadmap and confirmation of the Operational Plan to be presented to Council in January 2012 Encouraging Districts and Clubs to undertake an annual performance review Training for the incoming 1st Vice District Gover- nors would be held in Perth from 1 3 May 2012 Endorsing the 2014 Multiple District Convention will be held in Tamworth; and Approving a trial of advertising in the Rotary Down under All of these matters are designed to improve the standing of Lions in Australia and to make our organisation more professional and truly out- (Continued on page 2) CONTENTS DG Geoff s Message 1 Welcome to New Members...3 Past members remembered..3 Contact/Meeting Updates..3 Cabinet Secretary Notes 3 Canley Vale Leos MD201 Convention ANZI Pacific Forum N2 Convention MD201 Conv Tour LCI Convention..9 Wollongong Tree Planting..9 Gunning Fireworks Festival.10 Thirroul Seaside Festival 10 Macarthur Lions Fundraiser.11 Macarthur Lions Fun Run.11 Lions Products..12 Extra articles in Internet issue Page 1

During that Forum, I had a personal meeting with our International President, Dr Tam who encouraged me to work with Clubs to seek new members and to improve their membership retention rates. He acknowledged those clubs of the District involved in his special project to plant 1 million trees worldwide and asked me to inform Club presidents of the special relationship between them and our International President. Lions Lady Cherie and I also attended a number of sessions within the forum designed to educate and encourage us all to be better leaders and have a greater knowledge of Lions. Two of our Clubs had displays at the Forum, which were good advertisements for the work our District is doing. In late September, I visited the Leo clubs at the Cabramatta and Canley Vale High Schools and spent an enjoyable lunch with them. At times it was hard for me to realise these young people were actually school age. Their projects indicate they are far more mature than their age indicates! During the evening of 7 October, I went to the Gunning Showground and helped the Gunning Lions Club with their food stall at the Gunning Fireworks Display. Well, mostly I stood around talking, whilst Lions Lady Cherie helped out! I don t know how many sausages were cooked and served, but the Club is recognised for its role in what is a major annual event for the town. On 9 October, I travelled to Wollongong to take part in the planting of 1,200 trees which was organised by the Wollongong Lions Club. Members of a number of Lions and Lioness clubs from around the Illawarra were also there to lend their support to this important project. Supported by the Lord Mayor, this was a unique opportunity for Lions and Lioness to be seen to be supporting the environment. I would encourage other clubs to get involved in our International President s special project this year. The District Convention was held in Canberra between 14 and 16 October at the Southern Cross Club. Hosted by the Gungahlin Lions Club, it was a huge success. Special guests included District Governors from N3 and N5, Lions Bob Findlay and Steve Coleman. Importantly, there were 38 new Conventioneers attending (photo below). I wish to congratulate Lion Gary Parker on his election as District Governor for next year, Lion Allan McDonald as our next 1st Vice District Governor and Lion Lorraine Mairinger as our incoming 2nd Vice District Governor. They are all travelling on a great journey. I was able to attend the special Lioness and Leo forums which were held in conjunction with the Convention and recognise the very special niche these have in our organisation. I wish to particularly thank the Leos, who got me onto the dance floor on Saturday evening. I had a really great time with them, but on Sunday morning, I realised I am not 18 anymore! I especially wish to thank those who were involved in the debates of the various notices of motion. Finally, between 21 and 23 October, I represented our District at the N3 District Convention at Lemon Tree Passage, north of Newcastle. Past International Director Ron Loxton from New Zealand was the keynote speaker and he spoke about the role of Lions as volunteers. An annual Tailtwister s competition was conducted over Saturday breakfast, which was entertaining and expensive for some. N3 District Governor, Bob Findlay was kidnapped. by pirates on Saturday evening and more than $200 ransom was paid by Lions and their partners, which was donated to ALF. I met with the senior leadership of their District and can report N3 faces many similar challenges to those of N2. In summary, the first three months of my journey as your District Governor has been exciting and Lions Lady Cherie and I are looking forward to the remaining nine months with anticipation. Similar to previous years, we seem not to have problems inducting new members (42 at this stage) but it is the drops that are of concern - 76 in total. If you remove the deaths / transfers the total drops are close to 60 and of this amount a significant 39 are drops in good standing. In some of these cases the Lions were later reinstated and thus we didn t lose out as badly in overall terms. This suggests that Clubs may not be meeting the needs of these members one way or the other and they may be leaving as a result. It could also simply be our older members going of their own volition, though some brief analysis indicates that it might be our newer younger members who may be leaving because Lions is not their cup of tea. Do we need to change, or look at new ways of running our meeting, or different projects, or running training? Each Club is asked to have a look at their own situation to see what can be contributed and couple that with initiatives from Cabinet. WMMR s & Activities Reporting For all the past Cabinet Secretaries, none of what I am about the say will surprise. I generally have had around 35 Clubs per month submitting activities reports, with more often than not, generally the same (Continued on page 4) Page 3

4 (Continued from page 3) ones each month. This figure could and probably should be higher. I know DG Geoff has received correspondence from Lions Clubs International asking for an improvement in this area. The WMMRs are a less pleasant set of figures. Whilst I appreciate Secretaries have until the end of each calendar month to submit their WMMRs, on 24 th of this month I still had 40 of 65 missing. In July 4 Clubs failed to submit a WMMR, in August it was 11, September it was 16 and this month it was 14. We need to do better and your Zone Chairperson will be making contact if you are one of the Clubs involved. Elections and PU101 s While I know it s a little early be discussing Club elections and submitting PU101 s could I ask Clubs to schedule / complete their elections before the end of March 2012 and submit their resultant PU101 straight away thereafter. Next Cabinet Meeting Mittagong RSL Club 8:30 for 9:00am Sunday November 13 th 2011 Youth of the Year Greetings District and State Chairmen, I welcome those of you who are new to YOTY at the District level and wish you the best for your year. It is a demanding role as you keep chasing clubs, but it is also a very rewarding one, especially as you approach your District Final. To those who are continuing from last year (or beyond), I know you received an from me last year, but I make no apology as there is always the need to refresh the memory! You may be aware that the 2009/10 Council of Governors appointed me to the newly created position of Youth Membership Conversion Officer. This position came about in recognition that we need to work harder at encouraging young people to consider joining Lions. I have attached an outline here to give you an idea of what it is all about. As Lions, we come into contact with literally thousands of young people every year through our major youth projects (YOTY, YE and Leos). Through these projects we have a unique opportunity to introduce Lionism to the young people - and their parents, family and friends - and yet we have never really tried to keep in contact with these future leaders and encourage them to become part of our great Association. I have begun building my list of young people with whom we have had contact through YOTY, YE and Leos. So far I have been able to collect over 550 names (mostly YOTY) over a 15 year period - mainly in the last 6-7 years. I am writing to ask for your assistance in two ways: 1. Make sure that all of the Winners Advisory Forms are collected at all levels and forwarded on to your State Chairman. These forms have the details I need for future contacts, so they are a very important source of information. 2. If you have any details of former YOTY entrants (names and addresses), I would delighted to recieve them. I am also working with a couple of young Lions and Leos to look at how we communicate best - ie via electronic means, whilst keeping control (especially in the privacy area) by restricting membership to invitation only. I intend to write an article for the LION magazine as often as possible and I am working on a "where are they now" approach. I look forward to your assistance and maybe hearing from you with some details to help fill the gaps. 7 Youth of the Year 2012 At the time of writing, the response by clubs to this year s quest is very disappointing. There are many clubs who in previous years have made a voluntary contribution to the quest who have not realised that the Cabinet Treasurer s Semi Annual Dues Statement did not include the $130 Entry Fee in the amount to be paid. The sub-total of other contributions is incorrect and if clubs intended to pay the $130 entry fee or make a voluntary contribution they should check that their Treasurer has included the sum relating to Youth of the Year and make a separate remittance if necessary. Important Dates: Club Finals: must be completed by the 25 th February, 2012 at the latest. Preferably, prior to Christmas. Zone Finals: if required must be completed no later than the weekend of 3/4th March, Region Finals: must be completed by the weekend 10/11 March, District Final: will be held on Saturday 24 March, The District Final will be hosted by the Lions Club of Macarthur at the Camden Golf Club. State Final: will be held on 14 April, 2012 at the Griffith Leagues Club and hosted by the Lions Club of Griffith. Multiple District Final: to be held at the Multiple District Convention in Perth on 4 May, It is important that Club Chairmen contact their Zone Chairman to ascertain the dates and venues of Zone and Region Finals. Judges Briefings: The briefing must be undertaken at Club, Zone, Region and District levels. The purpose is to provide uniformity and consistency into the judging at all levels of the quest. Please refer to Chapter 4 of the Club Chairman Manual. Multiple District Chairman suggests that judges be supplied with a copy of the Contestant Entry Form in addition to the items listed under Section at least seven days prior to the final as this will enable the judges to formulate questions they will ask each contestant. The impromptu question at Club level should be reasonably simplistic, allowing for all contestants to answer comfortably. These will gradually become more complex as the contestants progress through the quest. Winners Advisory Forms: Immediately following the holding of a final at club level the Winners Advisory Form must be completed and the winner s entry form attached and forwarded to the Chairman of the next level of competition with a copy to the District Chairman. Zone and Region Chairman must ensure they attach copies of the Winners Advisory Form for all previous levels. Website: The website continues to provide up to date information regarding the quest. The site currently has a School Poster which has been designed to promote the quest in schools. The poster can be personalised for each school and Lions Club. The website address is: On opening the webpage there is a link to PROMOTION. Click on the link for further details. Under, YOTY Club Promotion, click on the link for further details >>> Promotion. The details on the YOTY Brochure can be change or altered to suit. Please don t hesitate to contact me should you have any question you can t find answers to on the website or in the manuals. Lion Brian Thompson District 201N2 Chairman Youth of the Year Quest bthompson@optusnet.com.au Phone: Mobile : Youth Membership IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE EXISTING LIONS YOUTH PROJECTS One of the great challenges to Lions is how to recruit young members. Lions are concerned that our membership is ageing and clubs are experiencing difficulties attracting new and younger members. It is a fact that young people do want to volunteer but many of them just do not know how to go about it. It is also a fact that young people are not interested in what they consider as protracted meetings and overdone protocol. Young people want to make a difference, but without the frills that traditional Lions Clubs observe. Some Lions may find this difficult and confronting, but if we are to survive, we must adapt to the new thinking. Lions Clubs must adapt to the world of today - to be a little adventurous, show initiative and be inventive in the ways that we promote Lions and in the projects undertaken so that we attract the younger generations to Lionism and its ideals. We have listen to the young people and encourage them to serve - and allow them to undertake programs that they are passionate about. We must also convince the younger that LCI has the brand and resources to enable them to achieve outcomes that are not possible for individuals and random groups to achieve. The Council of Governors recognized that we must work harder and smarter to encourage our youth to be involved in volunteerism by creating a new position the Youth Membership Conversion Officer. The position took effect from July 1, 2010 and the objective can be summarised as simply:- to encourage young people who have come into contact through the various Lions youth projects to remain in contact with Lions and become members. BACKGROUND As Lions, we are in the enviable position of already having a number of youth related projects which generate a huge pool of young contacts and we need to utilize them:- * Youth of the Year * Youth Exchange * Leos These well established projects give Lions ready made paths to the youth - and our future leaders - in the early stages of their development. Through these projects there is a great opportunity for promoting and encouraging young people AND their parents to become involved in Lions. Each year, thousands of young people to enter YOTY, travel with YE and to join Leos Clubs. We seek the approval of their parents and encourage them to come to the various events involved with these projects. What an incredible source those projects provide into the wider community, yet at the end of their involvement with many of these events, we say thank you for coming, shake their hands and let them walk away! We are effectively turning our backs on all of these young peo- (Continued on page 8) Page 7

8 (Continued from page 7) ple AND their parents - and in many cases - teachers, friends and other family members. In most cases, these people are very impressed with Lions and what we do, yet we make no real effort to introduce them into the Lions family. Most of the young people who come into contact with Lions through these projects come away with an excellent impression of Lions and what we do. They think that Lions is a wonderful organisation and our members do great work. Many former YOTY entrants are very happy to return as a judge, former YE travelers will talk in glowing terms about their time with Lions. Leos have already shown their willingness to serve by joining a club but what happens when they leave school or move away from where their joining club is located? We need to keep contact and encourage these young people and their parents to stay in contact with Lions. This new position has been created to do just that. MOVING FORWARD The next step: The best way to contact and keep in touch with young people is to use the technology available to them. With input and support of young people, programs such as Facebook are being investigated to present a package that is attractive to them. We will want this to be secure with restricted access to members only. There are also ways that Lions and Lions Clubs can contribute at their local level. Youth: We have the information we need to keep in touch and to promote Lions:- YOTY entry forms have contact details (please make sure this information is forwarded on the Winners Advisory form) YE registration forms have contact details. Leos are already members, we have their details Parents: Lions can develop strategies to invite the parents to consider Lions. At all events involving parents, a simple strategy is to set up a display with pamphlets and displays of Club, District, MD and International projects. How to make the first move is up to the club. When contacted, some young people may not want to be involved, their preferences would be requested and they will be removed from the list on request. CHAIRMAN RESPONSIBILITIES The Chairman is to contact and encourage young people who come into contact with Lions through the various Youth Projects and advise them of the opportunities available to participate in other Lions Projects and to encourage them to consider joining a Leos or Lions Club. Where possible, facilitate the formation of new Leos (or Lions) Clubs in conjunction with the District and nearby clubs. Recognise the potential for parents of the youth to be Lions and encourage Lions Clubs to approach these potential members. Provide practical suggestions to help clubs achieve these aims. Prepared by Lion Adrian Miles MD Youth Membership Conversion Officer Lions Regional Leadership Institute The institute was held on 26th to 28th August 2011 at the Novocastrian Hotel, Newcastle, which is owned by PDG Ken Gatehouse. It ran from 9am on Friday until 3pm on Sunday and included a working dinner on Friday evening and a formal Lions dinner on Saturday evening. At the dinner on Saturday, we had the pleasure of listening to a guest speaker, the previous owner of the Wangi Queen a cruise boat on Lake Macquarie, who at the age of 73 enjoys skydiving and travelling to remote areas of the world. Topics over the weekend included: Diversity: embracing individuality Lions fundamentals: where we learnt that Lions have a formal uniform a green jacket with the Australian coat-of-arms that ALL members can wear Working in teams: with several team building activities (photos below right) Sharing best practices: which was an opportunity to learn from fellow participants Public speaking: we had to deliver a 3 minute speech about either my family, my favourite holiday ; or where I live Communication: and the various styles of communication, where I learnt that I am a thinker Goal setting: where we learnt that goals need to be SMART, i.e. specific; measurable; actionable; realistic; and timebound Membership programs: where we learnt that overall there is a 13% annual attrition rate across Australia. This was concerning because even if a club gains new members, the overall membership is likely to decrease due to this attrition rate. We also learnt of a new type of Lions Club called New Century Lions Club which is specifically designed for young adults through to 35 years of age. The weekend proved a fantastic opportunity to meet 45 other likeminded Lions ranging from relatively new members who have been in Lions for only 2 months, through to those with extensive involvement, 27 years. Ages ranged from 24 to mid 70. In total there were over 30 Lions Clubs represented. (Continued on page 9) Page 8

9 (Continued from page 8) I would really recommend this course for anyone interested. I think that another emerging leadership weekend will be held in Melbourne in November. So if you are interested then I really do encourage you to participate. (Article & photos above supplied by Tony Kennedy, Canberra Belconnen Lions Club) No fewer than eight District N2 clubs participated in the Lions Regional Leadership Institute held in Newcastle over the weekend of August. Those represented were: Bundanoon (2), Canberra Kambah (1), Gungahlin (1), Nowra (1), Ulladulla-Milton (2), Wollongong (1), Moruya (1) and Canberra-Belconnen (1). In addition to Leadership, the intensive course covered a wide range of subjects including Lions Fundamentals, Membership Motivation, Public Speaking, Mentoring and the wide-ranging roles of the LCIF and ALF - along with meanings of many Lions' acronyms! A highlight of the course was the Saturday evening business meeting to the mythical - and legendary - Upotipotpon Lions Club. While the meeting had moments of hilarity under the chairmanship of President Spot (seriously, Lion Spot Swales, Zone Chairman Zone 3, Region 2, District N1), there was a very serious message to Lions Clubs from the guest speaker, polar explorer and adventurer, Graham Burgess, that Lions must always be aware of the need for revitalising and growing the organisation. All who participated felt the course was well worthwhile, although exhausting, and left buoyed up with enthusiasm and missionary zeal. Thanks to Institute Convenor, Lion Keith Parry, and to facilitators, Lions Andy Mojsiewicz, Ron Way, Deidre Schaefer, Peter Waymouth and Ann Ryan for their erudition - and patience. We had in total one hundred eighty people come to our lovely town to see our gardens and nursery. Lioness Sandra Symonds, Open Garden Coordinator Lions Family Cub Programme On Monday, 3rd October, DG Geoff Hobart visited the Lions Club of Canberra Belconnen and informed us that the one of the International President s foci this year is youth and that one of his, the International President s, wishes is to establish a Leo Club in every secondary school. As a result, I would like to suggest that our (Lions Australia s) attention be aimed at a younger audience as well. In the most recent edition of the MD201 district newsletter they mentioned about the Lions Family Cub Programme at present this is mainly run by clubs that have younger members because they have to bring their children to all of the functions. Why couldn t this be an activity like Leos where primary school aged children have an outlet. Unfortunately some children do not have good role models, so Lions could be an activity for children as well. Senior Lions members could be like foster grandparents giving parents support or even an occasional break from their parenting duties. Could this be a possible point for discussion at the next Cabinet meeting. 13 2011 N2 Canberra Convention N2 Leos Report As promised I have accompanied DG Geoff and Lions Lady Cherie on their visits to Canberra Lake Tuggeranong, Cabramatta High School and Canley Vale High School Leo Clubs and thoroughly enjoyed my time with these club members. I travelled to Bega to speak with the members of both Bega and Tathra Lions clubs on forming a joint Leo Club as there is only the Bega High School. The other option is to have two smaller Leo Clubs and not have them as Alfa Clubs. This is still a job in progress. The latest member numbers for the Leo clubs are: Ambarvale HS 39 members + 2 Remote (Narellan) Cabramatta HS 33 members Camden 5 members Canberra Lake Tuggeranong 16 members + 8 Remote (Taralga 6, Crookwell 1 & Bermagui 1) Canley Vale HS 35 members Fairvale HS 2 members Ulladulla Milton 3 members Warilla HS 23 members Dapto Lions inducted a new Remote Leo on 25th Oct The only hours I have had reported are Canberra Lake Tuggeranong (256hrs) & Taralga (93hrs) and monies raised - Canberra Lake Tuggeranong approximately $3, & Taralga $ I plan to hold a Leos Convention on the last weekend in March March 30, 31 & April 1 at the Wombeyan Caves Complex. I have booked the Dorm building for the nights of March 30 & 31. This building will hold 48 Leos and 4 supervisors and the cost per Leo will be $80.00, this will cover the accommodation and catering (to be done by Taralga Lions) and the price includes three cave tours two guided and one self guided. I have not budgeted for any costs involved with guest speakers, etc. We will have the use of the Barmah Kitchen and their Convention Room. We had 14 Leos attend the full convention, staying together in a house made available to us at Lions Youth Haven, for which I have to thank PDG Ron Kingsbury OAM, Lion Frank Brown, who went out of his way to help ferry Leos on Friday night and to unlock a bedroom door that was inadvertently locked on Saturday morning, and Farm N2 Leos with Matilda House (centre front) who gave the Welcome to Country during the opening of the Convention. Manager Gerry who played electrician and fixed the smoke alarms. These 14 attended the Leo Forum on Saturday where we also welcomed 2 Leos from Canberra Lake Tuggeranong plus their adviser Bec. The Leos that spent the weekend there were from Canley Vale HS (10), Cabramatta HS (3), Crookwell (1) and Taralga (3). I intend to visit the rest of the Leo Clubs with DG Geoff as he does his DG s Visits and look forward to meeting all of the Leos in the district. Jenny Cee, N2 Leo Chairperson N2 Lioness Report Our District Convention in Canberra was a great success, I hope everyone had fun, I did. It was wonderful to meet up with the Lioness from, Camden, Shoalhaven, and Wollongong Heights. I must congratulate the Wollongong Heights Club for receiving their award from PDG Warren for the best bulletin, and Oak Flats Club (photo to right) for the best Lioness club, you should all be feeling very proud of yourselves. 14 2011 N2 Canberra Convention The UN Flag Why do we march in the United Nations Flags at Lions conventions? (see photo to right of UN flag being marched into the 2011 N2 Convention). Lions took a leading role during the United Nations Charter Conference in San Francisco in 1945, and is one of the non-governmental organisations holding consultative status to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNESCO) since The first purpose of the UN is To maintain international peace and security ; the second purpose is To develop friendly relations among nations ; and the third purpose is To achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural or humanitarian character. Please compare these UN purposes to the first Purpose of Lions Clubs International, To create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world. These UN and Lions purposes fit well together. There is an Annual Lions Day with the United Nations, which includes presentations by UN speakers, a guest appearance by the UN Secretary-General, the grand prize award to the winner of the Lions Clubs International Peace Poster Contest, a luncheon with UN ambassadors, and a tour of the UN building. The Lions Peace Poster may be used in UN promotions and become a UN stamp. Because of this relationship between Lions and the United Nations, Lions are entitled to fly the flag of the United Nations. If you attended the 2010 Lions International Convention in Sydney you may have seen the Lions representative to the UN present President Syd L Scruggs with his personal UN flag (right). N2 Convention Chairman s Report The 201N2 District Convention 2011 at the Southern Cross Club was up there with the best, said District Governor Geoff Hobart, when he congratulated the Gungahlin Lions Club for their fantastic effort and team spirit. The weekend commenced with the Remembrance Service at Southern Cross Yacht Club, Yarralumla. A sudden downpour in the middle of the service did not dampen the reflection on the friendship of the dear friends and family members of the Lions and Lions Ladies that have been lost throughout the year. Our thanks to Chaplain Bill Sweeting and Lion Sandra Gilmour. The Southern Cross Club was the venue for the weekends convention. Delegates were entertained by Matilda House for the Welcome to Country, her down to earth humour set the mood for a relaxed and happy weekend. The Official Opening was by the member for Ginninderra, Dr Chris Bourke. For the Flag Ceremony we were privileged to have the Scouts as organised by our own resident trooper Garry Lymbery. Our partners went on a bus tour to visit Floriade, some of the ladies went on a cruise around Lake Burley Griffin and were given a commentary about some of the more important landmarks and then to have lunch at the Oaks Brasserie set in the Yarralumla Nursery, a good day was had by all. The Dinner Dance was very enjoyable with some people putting on their dancing shoes and enjoying the entertainment by Jetson 5. Our Leos were particularly busy and were able to entice our DG Geoff to join in the fun. There was so much activity over the weekend it is difficult to report on it all. There are a few people that need a special mention, firstly Lion Steve Holm excellent MC, his professionalism made the event run smoothly. Congratulations to the Committee on a job well done. Finally a big thank you to all Gungahlin Lions Club who came together and worked so well as a team. On the negative side however, the Clubs need to advise their members to complete and post their registration & hospitality forms and payment at least 2 weeks prior to the convention and that they cannot bring their forms with them to the convention, as catering needs to organised prior to the event. A final finance report cannot be given at this stage, owing to the fact that a couple of sponsors ($720) have still not paid and we are also expecting 10% of the sales from the Lions Shop (approx $149). When these monies have been received we should be able to return approx $869 to Cabinet. Therefore the total cost to Cabinet for the Convention should be around $4,000 George Fox, 2011 N2 Convention Chairman Left: Frank Brown talked about Lions Youth Haven, located in Canberra, & made us aware of the Lions Memorial Drive Right: Peter Wearing Smith talked about the Bundanoon Lions Club project, the falshid emergency identification system N2 Convention Xmas Cakes Raffle The prize winners of the Lions Christmas Cakes stall raffle were: 1st Prize: Watch Ian Bullman Ticket nd Prize: Crocheted rug Andrew Field Ticket rd Prize: Babies basket Heather Howe Ticket 5055 Tickets drawn by Lions Lady Cherie Hobart Kind regards, Lion June Field, N2 District Christmas Cakes Chairperson & State Coordinator N Districts Page 14

Family fun day, district interclub fellowship opportunity, fundraiser, greening the planet with 1100 new seedlings, call it what you will but the Tree Planting Initiative at Greenhouse Park run by Wollongong Lions Club and opened by our Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery was a huge success. Our District Governor Geoff Hobart came up for the day to lend a hand and led the plaque ceremony to acknowledge all of the Lions Clubs in our district AND Corrimal and Bundanoon Clubs as well. All present braved the impending wet weather to show their belief in the wishes of our International President Wing-Kun Tam. Lions and the community working together to help green our corner of the world. Wollongong Lions Club ran the BBQ, Wollongong Heights Lioness ran the morning and afternoon tea and everyone pitched in and had fun. We had $440 in raffle prizes for the day and free face painting for the kids. Money raised on the day went to Kids Fund, a local charity that provides specialised equipment for children with a disability, and the Australian Lions Foundation. It was such a successful day that there are plans underway to do it all again next year. (Article & photos supplied by Danina Scrivenor) Page 15

Lions Youth Haven I was very pleased to see such a good turnout from the Regions Clubs yesterday and I want to thank you for your excellent work in driving the tree planting project you created to such a successful conclusion. Additionaly, I'm sure it was the best exposure LYH has had in the Region for quite some time. The cooks tours allowed us to show the Lions what we are doing for youth at the farm and certainly appeared to go over well. 50 trees represents a good start to achieving the International Presidents objective of a million new trees during his year and, it will help Westwood Farm to present a much greener face to the world. A good job, well done and thanks again. Regards Frank Brown, Chairman Mbl; Both Maxine Helmling (Chair Zone 8) and I have set a goal for this year to get Zone 7 & Zone 8 to work together on a couple of projects. I put a proposal to the Youth Haven Board (of which I am a member) for our two Zones to supply and plant a number of trees at Westwood Farm (Youth Haven), Kambah. I felt, and so did Maxine, that this would kill a few birds with one stone ie planting trees in accordance with the International President's goal of planting 1,000,000 trees this year, promoting Youth Haven to our clubs and getting our two Zones to work together. Within a month we were able to get most of our clubs to agree to subsidise the purchase of 50 three year old trees at a cost of $20 each, coordinate the purchase and delivery of trees and muster some thrity odd keen Lions and their families to assist with the (Continued on page 20) Page 19

20 (Continued from page 19) planting. Gerry the Farm Manager used his farm equipment to dig the holes before we arrived so the really heavy work was taken care of, the trees weighed 40kgs each. There was a little concern during the week prior to the planting as we had heavy rain the two days leading up to the planting, but having contacts in high places helped us to arrange a beautiful day, even if a little windy. Obviously Maxine and I have the right contacts. As we knew we would have some hungry helpers Maxine and I tried out our culinary skills and provided morning tea for all. Youth Haven Board Chair Frank Brown took us all on a guided tour around the property in the Youth Haven bus which was very enlightening. After the tour a number of us had a BBQ lunch and then headed off home. From all the feedback we have received it appears Youth Haven are very happy and grateful for our donations and hard work and the workers really enjoyed the day and working together. Judy Farr, Zone 7 Chair (Photos supplied by Judy Farr) Lions Youth Haven Trees In Trouble As an Executive Teacher in charge of Student Support at Wanniassa School, it is part of my role to seek out programs that will assist students to remain connected to the school community and to support them in their learning and social journey. This year we have been fortunate enough to access the Trees in Trouble program. A group of 11 students (9 boys, 2 females), ranging from Year 7 to Yr 10, take part in the program weekly. The benefits of the program from two perspectives are outlined below: School and Teacher Perspective: The younger students have been exposed to the older ones in a different environment and the older students have taken on somewhat of a peer support role with the younger students Classroom behaviour has improved for the majority of the students with increased respect for school expectations and values New links have been established between the students, myself and the school s Youth Worker that enable more meaningful and productive conversations and planning Students see this as something that they value in their week and something to look forward to. Social interactions have improved through the conversations that happen about what they have been doing out there. Students feel that they are important in the school community because they are doing things that are helpful for the environment Student Perspective: These are quotes from some of the students involved: It s fun, educational and a great learning environment We ve seen it change some of the other kid s attitudes and personalities What we are doing is good for the environment It s great to be out in the bush doing physical stuff I love the fishing and that we get to cook It s changed my attitude to school Gerry is so patient The scientist guy knows so much We re lucky we were chosen to go It s the one thing that I love to come to school for We are very grateful to Lions Youth Haven for the time and effort they put into this project. The program is educational, team building, supportive and challenging. If school finances permitted, we would love to have more groups attending as the benefits have been noticeable and extremely positive. Sharron Kupke Executive Teacher Student Support Wanniassa School flashid: Making its presence felt Making its presence felt at yet another major Lions gathering, the Lions Clubs flashid Project attracted the attention of International President, TAM Wing-Kun of Hong Kong, at the recent ANZI Pacific Forum held on the Gold Coast. Picture: David Robson This was the second international appearance of the Project in 2011, the first being the International Convention in Seattle, where the Project was represented by FlashID Managing Director and N2 Spinal Cord Fellowship Chairman, Lion Lyn Montgomery. Since the Bundanoon Lions Club s adoption of flashid as a Club Project in 2009, and the project s first appearance at that year s N2 convention in Yass, (Continued on page 21) Page 20

21 (Continued from page 20) there has been an impressive string of achievements: April/May 2010 flashid made its national debut at the Mildura MD convention and was well received, with enquiries from all states; June/July 2010 flashid exhibited at the 93 rd Lions International Convention in Sydney, attracting much interest from overseas attendees; October 2010 flashid adopted unanimously as a District N2 project at the 2010 District Convention in Nowra; November 2010 First order received from a US Lions Club; December 2010 Lions Clubs flashid Project launched and registered as a fully-owned business of Lions Club of Bundanoon Inc; January 2011 world-wide Lions co-branding of flashid products approved and licensed by Lions Clubs International; February 2011 Second order received from US Lions Club, this time with Lions branding; April 2011 Lions Clubs flashid Project exhibited at MD201 Convention in Launceston, with several Clubs signing up; July 2011 Lyn Montgomery attended 94 th Lions International Convention in Seattle, USA and exhibited flashid in conjunction with US distributor, with enquiries from US, Canada, UK and Germany, among others; September 2011 ANZI Pacific Forum, at which many Clubs sought information, several signed up for the Project s $99 Starter Kit, and strong interest was shown by Lions New Zealand. As well as being on display at our own N2 convention, the flashid Project will be at several NSW and Victorian District conventions during October and November. For those unfamiliar with flashid, it is a patented Emergency Identification System, whereby owners may record personal and medical information on a pre-formatted, easily completed document that is then saved and stored in a USB device that may be read on virtually any computer. A typical page (left) of the flashid Emergency Identification Document. All that s necessary is to use your computers TAB key to move from one yellow box to the next, and from one page to the next, with the owner in control. Benefits of the flashid Emergency Identification System include: Ease of use; Comprehensive identification and medical information available in an emergency; Low initial cost, with no recurring membership or updating fees; No privacy issues, as the flashid s owner controls the information contained; No external database; Immediately recognisable through use of the international emergency symbol of a white cross on a green background; Choice of information carrier: Lions flashid Classic or Lions flashid Card. An early reviewer of flashid, a Professor of Medicine in one of our major universities stated succinctly, I assume it s an electronic equivalent to the old fashioned alert bracelets which people wear (and still do) but obviously can contain much more information. Contrary to the expectations of many, flashid is not just for the elderly or infirm. It was born as the result of motor racing experience and many are being used by young and active people, such as cyclists and an international rally team in which all team members are equipped with flashid devices, so that if any are injured they may receive timely and accurate medical attention. In a recent presentation, founder of flashid, Lion Peter Wearing Smith quipped, flashid is becoming an overnight sensation after seven years of hard slog. More seriously, he added, We are proud of what we have achieved with flashid. It is the product of years of steady development and improvement and is now a product with the very real potential to save lives. The Project recently made a commitment to donate $5 to the Lions Australia Spinal Cord Fellowship for every Lions flashid sold before June 30, 2012, with a target of raising $100,000 by the deadline. Of all the Lions Category B Projects, I cannot think of one more deserving of our support in this year, said Les Johnson, president of Bundanoon Lions and Chairman of the flashid Project s board of management, who indicated that other projects will be supported in subsequent years. Above are the flashid carriers, Classic (left) and Card (right). Footnote: N2 Spinal Cord Fellowship Chairman, Lyn Montgomery, and her husband Peter Wearing Smith, are available to visit N2 Clubs as guest Speakers with a double act in which Lyn briefs members on the Spinal Cord Fellowship and is followed by Peter on flashid. 22 Ambulance petition presented to Pru Goward MP Following the Bundanoon Lions Club s initiative in calling for a new ambulance station to serve the Highlands southern villages, a series of petitions were today presented to Member for Goulburn, Pru Goward, by Les Johnson, president of Bundanoon Lions. The first petition, with almost 800 signatures of residents in the southern villages, called for the establishment of a new ambulance station in Bundanoon or Exeter. The second, calling for an overhaul of the chronically under-resourced Bowral ambulance station, was gathered by Lions Clubs in Mittagong, Bowral and Moss Vale, and contained more that 2,800 signatures. At the public meeting we held in March, speakers, representing both the Ambulance service and the union, warned of the danger of resources at any new facility being siphoned off to meet the needs of Bowral, explained Les Johnson. As a result, our neighbouring Lions Clubs mobilised their members and gained tremendous support. Most significantly the strongest response was from Bowral itself, added Les. The petitions were not directed at the NSW Parliament, but specifically to Jillian Skinner, as Minister for Health, via Pru Goward, who undertook to call an urgent meeting with her ministerial colleague, to present the petitions personally. Outward Bound: Where to now? It s very gratifying that she is taking the matter so seriously, declared Les. Now we ll wait to see the results. Photo L-R Bundanoon Lions Club President, Les Johnson, presents the ambulance petition to Pru Goward, MP. For further information, please contact Peter WEARING SMITH on , or by on peterws@bundanoonlions.org In April 2012 the Nowra Lions Outward Bound Outward Bound Project will pass the 100 mark of young Australians to be sponsored on the unique experience of a 12 day Outward Bound Navigator Course. This is an outstanding achievement and a genuine community investment! But it didn t happen overnight. The first sponsorship was in 1989, and since that time, in later years in co-sponsorship with neighbouring Bomaderry Lions and more recently Shoalhaven Lioness Clubs, the Nowra Project has annually delivered groups of four and five and up to eight participants. The project has engendered a true spirit of community involvement, a standout being repetitive sponsor- ships from the Bomaderry Bowling Club. As of 2011, fourteen N2 District Lions Clubs are involved, following the Nowra lead. The project has a fascinating history. Interested readers should visit the recently revamped Lions Page on our website to read the full story, which began way back in 1976 when 1989 Club President Bruce Spender was a young naval officer in the RAN and current Outward Bound champion Geoff Stanton was yet to begin his epic sixteen year chairmanship of the Project and still going strong! Check out the Outward Bound website: Meanwhile, as the Nowra Project heads towards this memorable milestone, Outward Bound is keen to maximise this unique opportunity to further research the long-term impact of its courses on the lives of a reasonably homogeneous group. The eldest participant would be mid-thirties now, and Outward Bound wants to hear their stories, with particular emphasis on how the experience impacted on their lives. Do YOU know where any of them are? Or do you know their story? Help the Nowra Lions Outward Bound Project "One Hundred" share their Outward Bound experiences by submitting their details on our website, or let them tell their own story by directing them to our Alumni page! However when sick and dying children were brought to them, they were moved with compassion. They shared their home and food, what little belongings they had, and their lives with these children, teenagers and young mothers in need. John told us that since 1998 there have been hundreds of children whose lives have been saved through emergency intervention provided at the Sovanapoom Centre by John, Tess and young leaders who live and work with them. The Savanapoom Centre is an oasis of life providing milk to babies whose mothers have no money to feed them, children dying of starvation and disease, teenagers at risk of trafficking and adults with nowhere to turn. John showed us around the complex and it was amazing what he and his helpers have achieved during the past 10 years. He explained that the community of Sovanapoom quickly outgrew its original building by the Mekong River in Kandal (Continued on page 23) Page 22

23 (Continued from page 22) Privince and the new Community Centre was opened in January John went on to explain that those who find a home with them have the opportunity to stay at the Centre as they grow up and finish their education, learn a trade and gain employment. They will always be a part of our family no matter where they live John said. Presently all funding for this work is received through donations from individuals, businesses, churches and other organizations. It s only as they receive donations of funds that the work is able to continue; caring for the children, providing and education and vocational training, and continuing to assist the local community. John said it s never been easy but the visible difference in the lives of the children and the young people being helped was very encouraging. The little girl Yvie is holding (photo to right) is the youngest child at the orphanage and she will most likely spend her entire childhood and teenage years there. Tess (left) and John (centre) introduce the children of Sovanapoom Orphanage Centre to Lionsonoz members Yvie and Kel Kearns (right) John hopes to assist the students with employment opportuni- ties and helping those interested to establish business and cooperative ventures as they work towards sustainability for both the individuals and the Sovanapoom Centre. Thirroul Seaside & Arts Festival benefits Schools In April this year the Austinmer Thirroul Lions Club s major fund raising venture, the iconic Thirroul Seaside and Arts Festival, shattered all records on many grounds (photos below). Weather, crowds, displays, stalls, LIONS BIG- GEST BBQ for Childhood Cancer Research Foundation (another story raising $2,500), and then, the $17,600 that was distributed to 11 schools in the Northern Illawarra, all contributed to setting of these records. Each of these Schools from Bulli High School in the south to Helensburgh Public School and Holy Cross Catholic School Helensburgh in the north received a cheque at a special Morning tea held on 15 th June 2011 in the Thirroul Library and Community Centre. The schools were represented by students and staff. The donation of the Festival profits was specifically directed towards the development of creative art and artists in the area. A letter from the Principal, Austinmer Public School to our Lions Club stated, Your donation is appreciated and highlights your generosity of spirit and commitment to supporting public education...it is so very gratifying to see community citizens such as...members of your Lions Club giving back to the community. That School had used their donation to purchase specialist art supplies, including stacked drying racks, canvases and fine arts brushes. Another School Scarborough Primary School has purchased a kiln for use in their ceramics and pottery classes. This donation of profits from the Festival followed on from $20,000 donated to the ten (10) schools in 2009 for Library services. In 2010, the Austinmer Surf Lifesaving Club was the beneficiary with the profit of the Festival of $13,000 being donated by the Lions Club to purchase a new Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) for the Surf Club. Once more and yet again, our Lions Club, with tremendous support from our community, provides essential services to our schools, community groups and individuals. Where to next year? is the question on everyone s lips. This year we had 500 entrants, our oldest being ninety year old Jock Wylie, and the youngest a babe in arms, with many a pram being pushed. The weather was a bit overcast, which was great for the runners and turned into a nice sunny day. A great result as the days leading up to the Sunday had been raining! 21 teams competed in the event this year, which was a record, and one team, St Clare s Primary school, having 27 participants. The event is open to male and female runners with a 5 km or 10km course, and walkers participating in the 5km course.
