1 MD 201 N2 NEWSLETTER ISSN (Online) May June 2014 Service through membership District Governor Allan McDonald District 201 N2 of the International Association of Lions Clubs Greetings from District Governor Allan Thank you to those members of Lions would have assisted Ann & me over the last 12 months as we travelled along the journey. It was a well worth while experience and we will cherish memories for a long time. To those Lions who opened their homes to us during the visits, thank you. To all Cabinet Officers who have given their time and efforts to make this year a success it could not have happened without you, thanks again. A special thanks to Lorraine and Sally who shared the visits. It was not only a learning experience but it relieved the pressure so that other activities could be done in a timelier manner. The training team led by Ray Strong performed magnificently all year, with courses for Certified Guiding Lion, Club Excellent Process (CEP),Zone Chairman training, Incoming Officers plus there were the special trips to Clubs who requested extra assistance. The Club Care team has been working behind the scenes assisting Clubs sort things out between members. Not all were successful but members now know they have someone to turn if required. The event of the year was the Charter of Wattle Grove Lions Club sponsored by Ingleburn Lions Club. Thank you to Ingleburn but special thanks go to Zone Chair Wayne Franshaw and his assistant Garry Feeney who did all the hard work. Wattle Grove is the 1 st Club that our District has formed in 11 Cutting the cake at the Wattle Grove Lions Club Charter function. L-R Ingleburn Lions Club President Dennis Baert, Guiding Lions Graham Feeney & Wayne Franshaw, DG Allan McDonald, Wattle Grove Lions Club 1st Vice President Heather Franshaw Thomas, PDG Ian Hughes, PDG Keith Kent, & PCC Franz Mairinger. Photo supplied by Ann McDonald years. These events were closely followed by the formation of Club Branches at Ulladulla and Shellharbour. Congratulations to Peter Scifleet and his hard working committee from Kiama Lions Club. Ann & I have spent some time promoting the Club Branch at Ulladulla to finally see it formed. Hopefully both Branches will grow into fully working Lions Clubs in the next 12months. Members who completed the Guiding Lions courses are slowly completing their paper work to gain their certificate. Well done. It is hoped that the knowledge gained will filter down through Clubs in the years to come. Membership of the District is holding firm at this stage. Clubs are asked to work hard to prevent the drops that occur at this time of the year. Remember it takes about 10 times the effort to recruit a new Lion than it does take to drop them so it is worth the effort to retain them. Statistics show that if we could save 1 in 5 members who resign we wouldn t have a membership problem. Club changeovers are in progress at this time, may I congratulate the new Club Boards and wish them well for the next Lions year. District Changeover will take place in Ulladulla on the 19 th July; Clubs and Cabinet members will receive an invitation separately but there will be one later in this bulletin. Changeover is an opportunity (Continued on page 2)

2 Page 2 to thank this year s Cabinet and to welcome Lorraine back as District Governor with her new Cabinet. Lions will remember Lion Margaret Gerritsen who was Convention Chairman in Ulladulla, she was holidaying in Holland her native land where she had an accident on a bicycle and had a serious break to her ankle. On arrival back in Australia she was rushed back to hospital and has been there for some time. Unfortunately due to complications she has had her ankle amputated and will be out of action for some time. I am sure all Lions send her best wishes and a speedy recovery. Lions throughout the District have responded to the call to assist the Youth Exchange committee with hosting overseas youth. To those who have helped thank you. There are still families needed for 8 youth. Clubs who have qualified for the Club Excellence Award and wish to apply need to go to pdfs/da1.pdf applications close on the 30 th September 2014 and must be signed off by myself. I would love to see as many Clubs apply as possible. Clubs & their secretaries are to be congratulated with their reporting each month to District and Lions Clubs International. This improvement is as a result of the constant assistance given to them from the Zone Chairman and the Zone chairman Coordinator John Flarrety. Our District has far exceeded the level expected by Lions Clubs international. Once again thank you to all who have made this year a pleasure for Ann & me, Lorraine & Franz & Sally & Stan. We all enjoyed the hospitality and the experience. 4 Page 4 Lioness Report My congratulations go out to each and every club and all your members, you have done an amazing 9,438 hour of service in your communities, this is what we are all about, I m so proud of you all. I wish to pass on mine and Bevin s condolences to Wollongong Heights Lioness at the sad passing of their friend and Charter member Lioness Jill McLachlan, she will be sadly missed by her family and friends. The girls are raising the money for the purchase of a barcode scanner & reader for a local visually impaired person. It would be wonderful if some of the Lioness members from other clubs could attend, should be a good day. Camden Lioness have done it again, June Holdsworth OAM has received a Government of NSW Community Service Award, congratulations June. They have also assisted Camden Lions, supplying salads, cooking fish and sausages for the Seniors Picnic, which was held at Belgenney Farm. Their donations into the community this year is an amazing $19, The Camden community are very lucky to have the lioness so active in their area. I m proud to say that all Lioness Clubs have put in a huge effort into their community, Oak Flats Lioness have contributed $16,149.00, congratulations, for a small club this is an amazing effort. I have been busy paying my final, official visits, to all the clubs and of course attending changeovers, and, installing the new boards, is it just me, or has this year only had 6 months in it? Congratulations to all the new boards, I know that your members will all work hard to support you, have a wonderful year. Shoalhaven Lioness have received an amazing gift, a small local gift shop has closed down and the owner donated his remaining stock to the club, he has heard what a wonderful job they do in the community. They and Bomaderry Lions members had a very busy day boxing all the stock. They will be having lots of stalls to turn the stock into valuable dollars. A big thank you to the Liverpool girls for the amazing hours you put into the community, 6 ladies, 1,289 hours for the year. The Eden girls are busy getting the RSL hall, that they are now looking after, shipshape, it will make their lives easier as they can have all their catering equipment in one place, keep up the good work. I know we put so much of our time into the community, but at the same time, we must remember to look after our own members, sometimes they need, big hugs, as Camden President Mary keeps reminding us and also to have, fun, fun, fun. Bye for now Lioness Kay Hardy, N2 Lioness Liaison

8 Page 8 Wattle Grove Lion wins business award Wattle Grove Lion Heather Franshaw-Thomas, the owner, director, and early childhood teacher, of Funtazia Child Care, won the Child Care Centre category at the 2014 Australian Small Business Champion Awards on 5th April Funtazia and another business, Sleep Doctor and Holy Sheet, were the winners from the Campbelltown area. During the presentation, Heather said, I am very proud of Macarthur and considered it such an honour that my small business was a representative of the community on a national scale. I think the most outstanding part of Funtazia Child Care winning this award is that it is showcasing family day care and raising awareness on the level of quality care that exists in the family day care sector.
