3 China -The Next MICE Powerhouse The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) predicts that mega events such as the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, will serve as catalysts to propel China into its next phase of MICE development. The meetings and incentive travel industry is growing at an unprecedented rate, with a global trend toward more meetings, larger budgets and higher attendance rates worldwide. China has been identified as one of two countries in Asia, the other being India, making a big impact on the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) global stage. The country s burgeoning economy looks set to fuel a steady upward increase of MICE travel. China s economic growth has averaged above 10 per cent in recent years. By 2020, China will become the largest source of international tourism and the number one travel destination, while having the largest domestic tourism market in the world. There are more than 200 million Chinese today that are financially able to travel overseas. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) estimates a minimum annual growth of 12.8%, reaching 100 million by The Chinese MICE sector is growing at 20 per cent annually. In 2007, China held over 5,400 exhibitions and conferences, with the total area for exhibitions or conferences reaching 2.4 million square metres, ranking third in the world. Major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, along with domestic secondtier cities like Shenzhen and Wuhan, are becoming increasing popular in the MICE market for international companies. With its long history and rich cultural heritage, China is an ideal destination for MICE travellers as it has a plethora of offerings to cater to has various interest groups.
