In Memoriam Mrs Barbara Fowler OAM It is with great sadness that the BIHSIFF Committee acknowledges the passing of Mrs Barbara Fowler OAM, Founder and Patron of the Bothwell International Highland SpinIN and Fibre Festival. Mrs Fowler was an inspiring, gracious and hospitable person, whose vision and creative love of fibre, spinning and friendships, brought the world's artisans to Bothwell. At Barbara's invitation, international, national and local guests have shared their skills and cultural history, to encourage and enthuse SpinIN and SpinOUT attendees alike to pursue their creative potential through the manipulation of fibre. We extend our sincere condolences to her family and her many friends across the world. Juliet Smith President BIHSIFF Committee July 2018

Welcome Message from Juliet Smith Dear Patrons Welcome to the 40th birthday of the Bothwell International Highland SpinIN and Fibre Festival. The theme for our event is A Coming of Age. We wish to celebrate how we have grown creatively in this state through the influence of our Traditional Owners and the SpinIN s international guests over 40 years and our new Tasmanians, whether they arrived in the fifties or yesterday. Befitting the mission of the SpinIN, at this birthday festival we present more to learn, skills to share and friendships to make in an environment of tolerance and understanding. We have lost our Patron and Founder, Mrs. Barbara Fowler OAM in the past year. From a simple innovation to raise funds to repair St. Luke s church roof, this remarkable, imaginative and highly respected resident of Bothwell has left us a huge legacy; an internationally recognized festival. I invite you to enjoy, participate and be inspired by what you find here and celebrate this birthday, where for the SpinIN the phrase Life Begins at Forty is very applicable. We have learned much, but there is more. Juliet Smith BIHSIFF Committee President! 1 "

Welcome Message from Loueen Triffitt The Bothwell SpinIN is held every second year and embraces a celebration of fibre arts. It has an international flair featuring overseas, national and our very own Tasmanian guests. The two day event encompasses a wide range of activities and there will be something of interest for all who attend. As Mayor, I am delighted to welcome you all to this unique event. The cultural exchange that occurs between participants and the official guests is one of the festival s highlights. I thank the President, Juliet Smith and her Committee, who have worked tirelessly over the past two years and also the residents of the Bothwell Township for their input and continued support over the many years that the Festival has been running and in particular this 40th anniversary. I wish the SpinIN every success for 2019 and may you all build new skills, establish new friendships and reconnect with past acquaintances. It is a fun filled event of fibre, fleece, fabric and flocks of sheep. Loueen Triffitt Central Highlands Council Mayor! 2 "

Welcome Message from Margaret Miller Dear Friends Spinning, weaving and dyeing are ancient crafts and they are also very modern. It is a privilege to be among craftspeople and artists who love what they do. During this 40th Birthday we remember Barbara Fowler and are grateful for her vision and enthusiasm. Thank you to Juliet Smith and your committee for all your hard work bringing us this year s SpinIN. On behalf of the Handweavers, Spinners and Dyers Guild of Tasmania, I welcome all visitors to the Bothwell SpinIN and hope you enjoy your time relaxing, enjoying and learning. Margaret Miller President of the Handweavers, Spinners and Dyers Guild of Tasmania Our Special Guests The SpinIN has a long tradition of inviting guests to the festival. This year, we are pleased to welcome our State Guests Rita Summers and Jan Dineen, both of whom are distinguished designers from Tasmania and experts in their field. Our International Guest is Professor Julian Roberts from the United Kingdom. He is an accomplished fashion designer, artist and educator.! 3 "

A Short History of Bothwell Bothwell is a historic township with a rich agricultural and architectural heritage, nestled in Tasmania's beautiful Central Highlands. Established in 1822 and situated seventy kilometres northwest of Hobart, it is the southern gateway to our spectacular lake country. The tiny town with a population of around 400 was established by Scottish settlers. They named the settlement Bothwell and named the river which runs through it the Clyde. It was previously known as the Fat Doe. The Scots brought with them the Aberdeen Black Angus cattle and many families worked the land. Bothwell is one of Australia s oldest townships and is classified as a historic town. It boasts a large number of well preserved historic buildings and homesteads, comprising sandstone quarried from the hills adjacent to the town, bricks made from local clay and timber sourced from local sawyers. The township is home to around one hundred buildings of architectural heritage interest, an exceptionally large number for such a small town. Significant properties include Strathbarton, Clifton Priory, Wentworth House, Cluny, Llanberis, Dungrove, Sherwood, Montacute, Nant and Ratho Farm. Incidentally, the oldest golf course in Tasmania, if not Australia, is located at Ratho Farm. The surrounding highland plateau, at an altitude of 350m above the sea, provides rich soils for agriculture, the primary industry in the area. Bothwell produces high quality crops of wasabi plants and pharmaceutical poppies, Angus Beef cattle and thousands of sheep roam the pastures.! 4 "
