SPECIAL FOCUS GVK AUSTRALIA Queensland Government declares GVK Hancock rail access a State Development Area The Queensland Government has declared the designated route of GVK Hancock s proposed rail line from its Galilee Basin coal projects to the existing Abbot Point coal port as the Galilee Basin State Development Area (GBSDA). This declaration followed extensive consultation with landowners along the proposed rail line and provides guidance and development certainty to access the geographic area of the proposed rail infrastructure; thus enabling a coordinated approach to the development of the rail corridors. Till date, the GVK Australia team has undertaken over seven years of detailed planning and analysis for Galilee Basin projects, including the associated rail and port infrastructure. The detailed planning and design work for GVK s rail line goes far beyond the level completed for any earlier project in Queensland and has met all of the hydrological requirements of the government s stringent regulations. It also incorporates the respective parent companies extensive infrastructure experience to ensure that the rail line enables water to flow in extreme flood events, and to minimise damage to infrastructure. In fact, the design incorporates designated overflow points to ensure that repairs are able to be undertaken within a seven to ten day timeframe. Consultation with local landowners was a central element of planning for the proposed rail line. As part of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Supplementary Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) process for the rail line, an independent hydrogeological consultant was appointed to examine the extensive modelling and information was provided to affected landholders. Our GVK Australia team has successfully negotiated term-sheets with landholders for around 75% of the rail corridor that outline the commercially agreed terms for the acquisition and compensation of land. Irrespective of this GBSDA declaration, which incorporates land acquisition powers, GVK Australia aims to continue working cooperatively and negotiate in good faith with remaining landholders. GVK Australia also plans to recommence negotiations with the remaining landholders along the rail line route once it has finalised the proposed joint venture with Aurizon, Australia s largest rail freight operator. This joint venture with Aurizon will develop the rail and port solution connecting the southern end of the Galilee Basin to export markets with the joint venture agreement currently in the process of being finalised. Alpha Mine planning refinement to improve environmental and cost outcomes GVK Australia has always believed that large greenfield projects such as the Alpha Coal Project and its associated transport infrastructure can successfully be developed by delivering world leading cost and quality benchmarks. Applying this approach, the team has consistently focused on optimising the mine, rail and port project in order to bring the projects on-stream in the lowest global cost quartile. GVK WORLD December

SPECIAL FOCUS The GVK Australia project team has now materially refined the infrastructure and operational planning for its Alpha Coal Project, achieving significant cost savings and reducing environmental impacts. The impending environmental improvements are the result of ongoing planning refinement and a better alignment of infrastructure requirements without impacting the mine s 32 mtpa production capacity over 30 plus years. Amendments to the project s infrastructure and operational plan incorporate and reflect further advances in equipment usage, product handling strategies, infrastructure placement, land use improvements and mine lease optimisation. These planning advances not only reduce environmental impacts, but also ensure that our proposed Alpha coal mine continues to remain cost competitive in the current market conditions. In the past, the project team had secured contracts for water allocations of excess regional water supply, but through ongoing planning, refinement and subsequent reduction in water requirements will only be continuing with contracts for the water allocations that are required. GVK Australia will continue to work with the Queensland Government to develop the necessary infrastructure to secure a regional water supply for our operations in line with the Galilee Basin Development Strategy. As the GVK Australia team continues to advance their projects to a point where construction can commence, they remain committed to continue working with landowners, the community and all levels of Government. The project also continues to have compensation agreements in place with all properties in the area of its Alpha coal project and the amendments to the mine plan will be reflected in these ongoing agreements. GVK Hancock secures Environmental Clearance for Alpha Coal project After over 6 years of comprehensive environmental assessments and detailed planning, GVK Hancock has been granted an Environmental Clearance for its Alpha Coal Project in the Galilee Basin. The grant of this Environmental Approval represents one of the most extensive and rigorous processes that went into the environmental assessment of GVK s proposed Alpha mine, which included around 300 collaborative scientific studies, involving over 500 specialist consultants. The scientific rigour that has gone into the environmental assessment of this Alpha Coal Project has received approval from the State and Federal governments and GVK further plans to meet every environmental condition that has been set by regulatory authorities. This is a significant development that takes GVK another step closer towards bringing online a new low cost, low ash, low sulphur, high quality thermal coal basin, offering the ability to lower emissions from global coal fired power generation. With the Environmental Authority for Alpha Coal Project in place, GVK s key focus is to continue advancing the project to a point where construction can commence. 9 GVK WORLD December 2014

RECOGNITIONS AND EVENTS GVK EMRI and National Trauma Research Institute (NTRI), Australia to collaborate on developing better trauma care models To strengthen much needed trauma care in India, GVK EMRI has signed an MoU with NTRI Australia that would further enhance an established world-class network of emergency transport services managed by GVK EMRI. The expertise of NTRI Australia would bring an unparalleled opportunity to develop regional trauma systems that provide injured people with lifesaving care at the roadside, rapid transport and timely treatment of their injuries. Aims of the collaboration Developing model regional trauma systems linking ambulance and hospital services Developing protocols to guide treatment and transport of patients Training in trauma care and emergency system leadership Strengthening communications, system monitoring and oversight Demonstrating effectiveness of integrated systems on patients and costs Provide financial models to support sustainable systems Our Founder Chairman and MD, Dr. GVK Reddy and Prof. Russel Gruen - Director, NTRI signing the MoU in the presence of Australian PM Mr. Tony Abbot (C). GVK EMRI helps reduce Maternal and Infant Mortality Ratio in states across India Since its inception in 2005, the GVK EMRI service has helped transport more than 25 million patients to medical facilities out of which more than 8 million (> 30%) have been pregnancy related cases. This timely intervention by GVK EMRI has helped reduce the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) significantly. In a state like Tamil Nadu where the service was started in 2008, the Maternal Mortality Rate has decreased from 85 to 79 per 100,000 live births. Since 2008, it has also helped the government reduce the Infant Mortality Rate from 35 to 22 per 1,000 live births. Similarly, in Gujarat where the service has been active since 2007, MMR has come down by 15%. In Andhra Pradesh, where the GVK EMRI services were launched in 2005, a 13% reduction in MMR has been recorded. One of the chief causes of Maternal Deaths identified by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is delay in identification and transportation of the pregnant woman to a nearby medical facility. In a diverse country like India with a large rural population, varied geography and inadequate transport infrastructure, this issue gets compounded. And where emergency transport is available, the ambulance staff is often not trained to handle such cases, should a woman deliver enroute. GVK EMRI ambulance staff has been specially trained in basic life and cardiac support, as well as support in obstetrics. In fact, GVK EMRI technicians have successfully assisted in over 300,000 deliveries which took place enroute to the medical facility itself. 21 GVK WORLD December 2014

PROJECT UPDATES Deoli - Kota Expressway Project, Rajasthan Toll Plaza Overview of road Toll Plaza building GVK EPC: Fast-tracking growth The main challenge for any company involved in development projects is to deliver the project on time and at a predetermined price. Having an in-house EPC arm reduces the risk of dependency on outside agencies for the delivery of the project. The engineering and construction contractor carries out the detailed engineering design of the project, procures all the required equipment and materials, and then constructs and delivers a functioning facility or asset for the company. GVK Projects and Technical Services Limited (GVKPTSL), the Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) group is the construction arm of GVK. It helps deliver responsive and end-to-end engineering, procurement and construction solutions for GVK s crucial projects including project management. Presently, GVK EPC has two major road projects that are under construction in Rajasthan and Gujarat and a hydro project in Uttarakhand. The vertical is also contributing towards non EPC works at Goindwal Sahib Thermal Power Plant, infrastructure and R & R Colony works at the coal mines in Jharkhand and is actively involved in the Ratle Hydro Electric Project. The GVK EPC team has overcome many challenges pertaining to clearances, local interferences and other socioeconomic issues to deliver these projects. With EPC s valuable contribution, GVK is well placed to commission three of its major projects, Deoli-Kota Expressway Project, Shrinagar Hydro Electric Project and Goindwal Sahib Thermal Power Plant. The other key projects like Bagodara-Vasad Expressway and Ratle HEP are under development. Also, with the new government s focus on infrastructure development, it is expected that many projects on PPP mode would be implemented in the near future, thereby helping progressive companies like GVK to effectively contribute towards economic development. Thus, the role of EPC is only set to grow as it would help deliver projects in a timely and costeffective manner. 23 GVK WORLD December 2014

EMPLOYEES CONTRIBUTION A Journey called India Venkat and his wife Lakshmi were walking up and down the house, awaiting the arrival of their son - Ram, his American wife Mary, and their US raised kids Ananya and Krish. As Ram and his family arrived in their traditional home in Mylapore, Chennai a subtle happiness descended on the family. Ram... was the journey too long? Did the children feel bored during the long wait for changeover at Mumbai airport? Venkat was curious to know about how they spent time at Mumbai airport, since he insisted for the detour from JFK to Chennai via Mumbai, despite those ordeals of changeover. Ram narrated to his parents, how he got delayed to board the flight due to the skylight walk at the terminal and how he was about to miss the flight to Chennai, as they had visited the Airport museum and had to rush to the plane as the last passenger. No sooner the flight gained height and the seat belt sign switched off, the kids ran from their seats, to ask, Dad, what is that huge black wooden carved structure of 12th century, among the many ancient things we saw at Mumbai airport terminal? I have not seen anything like this before in my Google search or in any books. Ananya s curiosity was palpable. Are they available in temples and in use even now, in India? What s that old big goat like structure on a wooden platform dad? It was Krish s turn... And those huge facades and frames? Are they part of the royal remains of a kingdom?... Are there those ancient forts and palaces standing even now, came the chorus from both. And then those huge wooden boxes? Are they the ones used centuries ago? In place of our suitcases for travel..? 29 EMPLOYEES CONTRIBUTION journey India and her people travelled for over several thousand years. Ram soon realized the tough job in hand to explain to them, about a tradition, about a legacy, a glorious past of a diverse art and culture, different languages and faiths, all of them being different from one state to another. A tough assignment, he for sure, would need his dad and mom s help to tell them the story......the story of India, be it the Royalty of Rajasthan or Bravery of Maharashtra, Tradition of Tamil Nadu or Culture of Karnataka, Nature of Tripura or the Legacy of Kerala... or the Art of Andhra. A story spanning over several thousand years, the birth place of many religions, Vedas and Yogas, Sastras and Sutras. The story of the mystique and medieval India s history is endless as well as unfathomable and will take beyond a lifetime for anyone to explain or experience. Ram was confident, his father would explain to his grandchildren about those statues and structures, relics and remnants, antiques and artifacts, each depicting a rich heritage of a state in India, which they saw and admired at Mumbai airport, and the legendary stories behind them... including showing some of them, in this holiday visit, in a Temple or a street nearby. As Ram narrated his travel experience on his return to US and his transit halt to and fro at Mumbai Airport, James, his colleague saw a glow and emotion, a sense of pride on his face. More than telling James about a perfect blend of tradition and modernity, Ram was elated to explain the time (or the lack of it), he, Mary and the kids spent in the terminal and the way they have showcased A Journey Called India. James also noticed, as Ram explained, how an airport could appeal to a kid and a grandfather alike and how it could kindle a curiosity or quell one, by becoming a subject itself for discussion. Also how an airport could attract another destination traveller, as a visitor, enroute. As Ram described the Journey Called India to James, in his New Jersey office during lunch, he fondly recalled the huge 1000 year old Ganesh statue, blessing the passengers benevolently at the airport and the story his father told the kids about Lord Ganesh winning the mango (knowledge) by just going around his parents Shiva and Parvati, compared to his brother who took a worldwide tour to gain the same. The same epic story was told by his father when he was young, as told to him by his grandfather and so on, for over a thousand years. A flash of thought crossed his mind, Was his father likening this story to the Mumbai airport, for showcasing entire India, in just the Terminal itself? A day later, when Ram was reminiscing about those events and his story to James, he was wondering if he was narrating his journey via an airport or the journey India travelled thus far. Well, when Ram met James in his office next, he saw James on the net searching for a flight heading to Mumbai. May we say, a Pride of India! By Y. S. Manian, GVK MIAL 27 GVK WORLD December 2014

Here are some memorable travel experiences shared by GVKites in response to the SYTE contest Share Your Travel Experience contest Somnath The Best Temple I ve ever visited Gujarat In the Land of the Mahatma, to be in the Company of the King. Somnath The Best Temple The place is an architectural wonder with lush gardens in the surroundings. Once here, one must not miss the point at the edge of the temple directing to the south which claims that moving straight in the pointed direction, would take one to South Pole, uninterrupted by any land mass in between. Somnath is a calm and peaceful place to be that would surely bring one closer to the God within oneself. Gir - A Journey into the Lion s Den, the only Den left Sasan Gir is like any other National Sanctuary you visit. A small town surrounded by a forest. You realize you ve entered Gir as soon as the green fields accompanying the roads, give way to the dense dusty trees. Since I visited Gir in March, it wasn t much green around, but an equal draw between rising mercury and probability of animal sighting. The forest looked dry and felt thirsty. The morning safari was beautiful. March still had a bit of chill to offer at 6 in the morning and the sunrise offered very warm scenic view of the forest. We were blessed to catch a sight of His Highness, The King of the Jungle. We also spotted a pair of lionesses set out for a morning walk/ kill. It was really breath-taking when we followed the pair of lionesses, walking on the safari track for about 15 mins before they got into the forest again. It was one majestic view which left each one of us spell-bound. It was a beautiful experience tracking the pugmarks. The wind was enjoyable, the forest was quiet and dense and the feeling of suspense wafted through the air making our jungle safari unforgettable. GVK WORLD December

EMPLOYEES CONTRIBUTION Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her he asked. Daughter, what do you see? Potatoes, eggs, and coffee, she hastily replied. Look closer, he said, and touch the potatoes. She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face. Father, what does this mean? she asked. He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity - the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently. The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak. The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new. Which one are you, he asked his daughter. When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean? In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is what happens within us. Which one are you? Which one are you? by PVSS Kumar, Jegurupadu CCPP with inputs from web SAP implementation at GVK SAP (System Application and Products) is designed to create a common centralized database for all applications running across all departments in an organization. It is at the centre of today s technology revolution; developing innovations that not only help businesses run like never before, but also improve the lives of people everywhere. For a premier infrastructure developer like GVK, the importance of SAP was long being felt. Seeking to improve efficiencies and tighten integration, GVK sought to bring its entire line of operating companies onto a central, standardized platform that would allow the business to benefit from greater economies of scale. GVK needed to maintain tight control over all aspects of its operations, in order to ensure that projects are implemented on schedule and that its many business divisions run as profitably. GVK partnered with IBM Global Business Services to implement a broad suite of SAP ERP applications, including Finance & Controlling, Materials Management, Plant Maintenance and Sales & Distribution. For improved project lifecycle management, GVK chose to deploy SAP Project System, and the company streamlined electronic document management with SAP Document Management System. It all began on May when GVK SAP team comprising core members and consultants set a go-live date for January The team put in a lot of efforts into the implementation. The day used to begin with a morning meeting that went on endlessly. As we approached the scheduled date, we were working relentlessly without any question of a weekend or a holiday. But much to our delight, our hard work and planning finally paid off when we completed the project in scheduled time, in just eight months. The first phase of SAP implementation comprised five modules, namely, Finance, Material Management, Plant Maintenance, Projects and Sales & Distribution. With GVK having twenty two different companies with different GL codes and different processes, bringing this into common chart of accounts was one of the biggest challenges for the core team. A SAP umbrella for GVK has enabled a better integrated management that allows its users to conjoin diverse parts of business and access intelligible database and endless MIS information. The MIS forms an important part of the equation as it helps to analyse the data generated by SAP and implement the required changes in real time. The visibility, real time transaction and access of information to its users at multiple locations are the biggest advantages of SAP. by Megha Rani, GVK Corp. 35 GUEST SECTION Fly safe, Fly healthy Short flights are delightful but long haul flights can be a little challenging. Prolonged exposure to cold and dry cabin air forces some of us have to use the washroom often. A snoring neighbour or a bawling kid kicking our seat from behind makes the journey more taxing. Losing the track of time is another factor that affects the body cycle. The crew serves breakfast when we are just falling asleep, and when everyone sleeps we feel hungry. Air turbulence too plays spoilsport and leads to anxiety related insomnia, making many of us fatigued due to lack of sleep. Amidst all this, what we must actually worry about and try preventing is a bigger health risk of developing a clot in our blood vessels that may arise due to prolonged seating duration in such flights. Understanding the clot is the first step in preventing it. When we are wounded, blood spatters out. Our body s healing mechanism kicks in, creating a natural bandage, a crusted dark brown covering called the clot to stop the bleeding. The clot (medically known as thrombus) can sometimes turn into a curse when it develops at the wrong place. Take for example our veins that carry used blood (by the body) back to the heart and then to the lungs for purification. The problem starts when these body s pipelines are narrowed or partially blocked. This may take place due to an injury to the vein such as a sharp blow or surgery, or heart disease or radiation therapy for cancer. Even prolonged immobility can disrupt the venous blood flow and sometimes block it (medically known as thrombosis). These above mentioned conditions cause sluggish blood flow and clot formation in the veins. If these troublesome clots form in veins that run deep in our body they are known as Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT. There are other reasons for DVT, like thickening of the blood due to dehydration, or restricted blood flow due to tight clothes. A tightly fastened seat belt can also hamper the blood flow. When the clots develop in veins surrounded by powerful calf muscles of the legs it can be fatal. The clot that generally hangs on to the inner side of the vein (thrombus) can get dislodged by the pressure from the powerful calf muscles. This mobile missile called embolus is now free to travel with the blood. When the blood (carrying embolus) from the calf veins is heading first to the heart and then to the lungs for purification, it may turn into a life threatening situation. The embolus blocks the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the lungs or other crucial blood vessels in the lungs resulting in a serious condition called Pulmonary Embolism and may lead to on-the-spot death. DVT in air travellers was first described as Economy Class Syndromes (ECS) or Traveller s Thrombosis. It is difficult to know how many air travellers suffer from DVT, as the condition may be symptomless in the beginning and the embolism may occur several days after the travel. Watch for a swelling or pain. Several factors contribute to DVT - like cramped seating, prolonged immobility, position (bent knees that compress the deep vein behind the knee), low oxygen, dry air and low cabin pressure at high elevations that leads to dehydration. The risk increases if the traveller is obese, is a smoker, is pregnant or is on oral contraceptives. Excessive consumption of alcohol during flights is an added disadvantage. Easy ways to avoid DVT during travel 1) Wear comfortable clothes 2) Do not store luggage near your feet 3) Do feet exercise raise your heels keeping your toes on the floor and then bring heals down do it for several times and then repeat 4) Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol 5) Ask the airline staff if they provide compression stockings and if yes, consult the staff and use the stockings during long haul flights 6) Walk on the aisle a few times during the flight 7) If you are on a medication ask your doctor how to adjust the intake in different time zones 8) Let s be active and mobile to enjoy our flight by Medha Deshmukh Bhaskaran, The Author is a Microbiologist and was the Health Columnist for a leading newspaper in the Gulf. 33 GVK WORLD December 2014

Leisure Page LEISURE TIME Solve the Sudoku such that each column, row and block contains numbers 1 to 9 and no two numbers in the same column, row or block are the same. How to Determine the Day of the Week for any Date. Identify the day for any of the dates in 2015! Months: January February March April May June July August September October November December Formula: Add the date to the designated number for the month. The result then needs to be seen as the multiple of 7 as there are 7 days in a week, if the result is completely divisible by 7, then it s a Sunday otherwise the remainder would determine the weekday. Based on the remainder on divisibility by 7, following numbers represent the weekdays. Sunday-0, Monday-1, Tuesday-2, Wednesday-3, Thursday-4, Friday-5, Saturday-6 Example: For instance, we need to identify the weekday for 30th June 2015, then 30(date) +0(month) =30/7 leaves a remainder 2, thus 30th June is a Tuesday. by Arun Arora, Corp.
