3 CEO Statement On January 13, 1974, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport officially opened after decades of discussion between our owner cities of Dallas and Fort Worth. We have been connecting the world ever since by providing our customers with outstanding facilities and services. In our first year, DFW had 190 employees and served about 6.8 million passengers. Forty years later, we now employ 1,760 employees and serve approximately 62 million passengers annually, with 7 runways, 5 terminals, and 30 airline partners transporting people and goods to more than 200 destinations around the globe. This tremendous growth has reshaped the North Texas region. We have become a force of change, a connecting point that integrates industry and aviation, and a place where jobs and opportunities are created for the communities we serve. As we turn our focus to the next forty years, DFW is poised for growth in both domestic and international markets. By practicing sustainability, DFW can continue to grow the core business of passenger and cargo air service, while strengthening and preserving the natural resources and assets that we depend upon our people, our community, and our airport. I am excited to present our 2014 Sustainability Report, which represents the enthusiastic efforts of our employees and sustainability teams. DFW takes its responsibility to the planet seriously, and I intend to strengthen that commitment. We will enhance and further integrate robust programs to the sustainable use of natural resources, the efficient use of energy and the growth of our local economies and communities. I proudly recognize the efforts of DFW s employees to address sustainability issues relevant to our People, our Airport, and our Community. DFW has made considerable progress in many areas towards a more sustainable community this report acknowledges our past successes while keeping us on the path for future sustainability improvements. DFW s vision for a more sustainable enterprise will require commitment, innovation, and collaboration for years to come. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to our customers, business partners, neighbors, and the staff of DFW for taking a leadership role to protect and restore our environment, create economic value and support and strengthen our community. At DFW, our sustainability motto is Trusted with Tomorrow. As responsible Airport leaders, we have a duty to make sure that the airport we leave behind is resilient and enduring for generations to come. By embracing sustainability as a way to continually improve our business, we are taking the steps today to ensure tomorrow s success. Sincerely, Sean Donohue 3
4 This is the third Sustainability Report published by Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and is presented as an executive summary, providing updated figures for our chosen sustainability indicators. This report was prepared using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3.1 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines and the Airport Operators Sector Supplement (AOSS). GRI, a non-profit organization, has pioneered and developed a comprehensive Sustainability Reporting Framework that enables all organizations to measure and report their economic, environmental, social and governance performance. Thousands of organizations, of all sizes and sectors, use GRI s Framework to understand and communicate their sustainability performance to stakeholders and the general public. Learn more at The report period covers primarily the fiscal calendar year, October 1, 2012 to September 30, 2013, but also includes information from the 2013 and 2014 calendar years. 4
5 DFW IS THE WORLD S 3RD BUSIEST AIRPORT 40YEAR ANNIVERSARY DFW MOBILE APP FT WORTH OVER MILLION CUSTOMERS A YEAR DFW AIRPORT DALLAS About DFW Airport Celebrating its 40th Anniversary in 2014, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is the world s third busiest, hosting 1,850 flights a day and serving more than 60 million customers a year. Located halfway between the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, DFW Airport provides nonstop service to 147 domestic and 55 international destinations. For seven consecutive years, DFW has ranked among the top ten large airports worldwide for customer service in surveys conducted by Airports Council International. For the latest news, real-time flight information, parking availability or further details regarding the many services provided at DFW International Airport, visit or download the Official DFW Airport Mobile App. 5
6 Our Approach to Sustainability In the most general terms, sustainability means seeing the big picture recognizing how our actions today can have long lasting impacts on our environment and natural resources in the future. Such a broad concept applies to different organizations in different ways. For DFW Airport, the idea of sustainability relates to our commitment to conduct business responsibly, allowing the benefits of our work to flow naturally to all of our stakeholders. Rather than focus on solely financial success, we have an obligation to obtain optimal results in the areas of social responsibility, and environmental stewardship, as well. Sustainability experts refer to this as the Triple Bottom Line of economic, social, and environmental needs. Taking that idea a step further, our goals as an airport are divided into multiple focus areas. Procurement Asset Optimization Infrastructure and Resiliency Energy and Air Community Partnerships Biodiversity and Communication and Education Natural Environment Employee Participation Water Leadership Waste and Recycling THE TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE Our goals often mutually support one another. For example, when we reduce operating costs by conserving energy, we also preserve our physical assets, improve the quality of our work environment, limit regulatory interventions, increase the pace of innovation, and improve our reputation and brand value. By operating so that our business interests and the interests of the environment and society intersect, DFW has positioned itself as a strong corporate and community partner, a recognized industry leader, and an organization poised to thrive for the long term. FINANCIAL SUCCESS SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP 6
