3 Presidents Report Being an Olympic year 2012 proved to be significant year for badminton in Queensland. The media exposure gained as a result of the Olympics saw a resurgence in the number of people wanting to play badminton, and a general increase in club numbers (as reflected in the memberships). The challenge will be to capitalise on this in 2013 and to ensure this is reflected as an increase in membership numbers. There were some outstanding achievements from our individual players in Wendy Chen (Brisbane) and Wesley Caulkett (Gold Coast) were both selected to represent Australia for the Thomas and Uber Cup. The Australian Womens team qualified for the Uber Cup Finals held in Wuhan, China. At the Australian Closed Championships, Queenslanders won three of the five titles. Wendy Chen won the Womens Singles, and Womens Doubles events with Chia-Ju Hsieh and Wesley Caulkett went on to win the Mens Singles at the same event. Other outstanding results were David Ngiam who won the Australian U19 Mens Singles and Mens Doubles events with partner Cham Chen (NSW) and Grace Ngiam who won the Australiasian U17 Ladies Doubles championships with partner Joy Lai (VIC). Grace Ngiam also won the very prestigious award of the Sylvia and Clem Jones Emerging Athlete Award at the 2012 Sportwoman of the Year Awards. Queensland Badminton hosted Li-Ning Val Nesbitt Trophy and Under 15 Regional event and Australian National Under 15 Individual Championships in Caloundra during October Eleven teams from around the country took part in the Championships. A big thank you to our Referee Ian Williamson, Assistant Referee Andrew Greenway, Executive Officer and Brisbane based volunteers (including a number of our state juniors) for their work throughout the weeklong event. It was also great to have National Coach Lasse Bungaard and National Development Manager Glenn Warfe in attendance throughout the event. Throughout the year we conducted a number of Queensland competitions and tournaments. These were very successful and had good participant numbers. A big thank you to the players who supported these events and volunteers for making these events possible. The standard of badminton played at events continues to improve from year to year, and a number of players were re-graded throughout the year, due to their hard work and improvement in their play. Queensland Badminton partnered with Badminton Australia and Brisbane Badminton Association to commence some new badminton activities targeting people from a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse background. The funding from Badminton Australia assisted with the vital start up of new 3

4 activities at Sunnybank Hills and Nundah to deliver additional badminton programs. activities have been further expanded in 2013 to be delivered in Cairns and the Gold Coast These Cairns Badminton has now become a very strong member of the QBA. A big thanks to David Langtree who is the driving force behind badminton in Cairns. The club has gone from strength to strength and we hope that in the near future we will see them participating in more competition. Queensland Badminton has been bolstered in 2012 with the addition of a Local Sport Co-ordinator on the Sunshine Coast and in Cairns. Samantha Moore undertook the role for a six month period on the Sunshine Coast, and did a lot of work with schools and council to raise the awareness of badminton on the Sunshine Coast. Vinny Nowell has taken up the role in 2013, and will continue to spread this awareness and increase playing and membership numbers in that region. Alexi Sachlikidis is based in Cairns and is shared resource between 3 different sports. Whilst this provides for some challenges Alexi has contributed to the development of badminton in Cairns throughout the year. In 2013 we do face a number of challenges. Growth in our volunteer ranks is critical to the sports survival. The challenge for all of us is to enhance our volunteer numbers and get more people actively involved in running our sport. We must also grow our technical officials, being umpires, line judges and referees. With the 2018 Commonwealth Games on our doorstep it is critical that we have volunteers and technical officials to support this event. It is also critical that our existing clubs continue to grow and adapt with the sport, rather than resist the growth opportunities. The Queensland Government, our major funding partner, is insistent that we have a more state based focus. A key deliverable is for the sport to expand outside of our existing affiliates. Our existing South-East corner affiliates must take more responsibility for the development of the game within their jurisdictions and ensure that they continue to grow and contribute to the membership in Queensland. In 2013 and beyond, QBA must focus its efforts in expanding badminton in new areas such as the South-West, Northern and Western regions of the state. It is vital that our sport invest in the future and operate activities for juniors. All of our Associations must take responsibility for the delivery of junior activities and growth of junior membership. It was also pleasing to have the Brisbane Badminton Association run a junior competition in 2012 (this had not run for a few years). It would be great to see more junior tournaments come onto the calendar. It was also great to see Brisbane Badminton Association affiliate two new clubs during Finally I d like to express my sincere thanks to our funding bodies for their support throughout The Queensland Government have been our major contributor for a number of years, and the funding they provide allows us to do vital development work with school, and to introduce badminton to regional areas where it is currently not played. Badminton Australia s support 4

5 through development money they receive via the Australia Sports Commission has also been critical to the success in expanding our sport. Without the help of these funding bodies our sport would not be able to continue to grow. I would also like to acknowledge the support of Ipswich City Council who provided the venue for the Queensland Junior Championships at no charge. Yours Sincerely Christine Luck President 5
