4 As President of Western Suburbs Badminton Association, I welcome you to our Stadium for this great Carnival. We are proud to be the host of the 2013 Under 17 Li-Ning Australasian Badminton Championships incorporating the June Bevan Trophy. We welcome June Bevan to this Carnival. Pleasse take time to introduce yourself to June. WSBA has a proud history of 78 years of operation, starting in 1935 when Badminton was brought to the Western Suburbs of Melbourne and Church clubs were started. Now we are the largest affiliated Association in Australia. Enjoy our Stadium, play well for your team and yourself, spend time with your team mates and get to know other team players. Make the most of this great experience of representing your State and Country. Good Luck everyone! Pat Daw President W.S.B.A.Inc. I would like to welcome all participants of the 2013 Under 17 Li-Ning Championships incorporating the June Bevan Trophy to Hobsons Bay. Australasian Badminton Hobsons Bay is home to two wonderful nearby beaches, kilometres of coastline, great expanses of open space and nature reserves, as well as top eateries and shopping strips and many historical sites. I encourage you to take in all the wonderful places Hobsons Bay has to offer if you find the time between matches. With many of you travelling from across Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia to be here, I wish you all the best as you compete in one of the largest badminton events held in Australiaa and New Zealand. Good luck! Cr Angela Altair Mayor of Hobsons Bay

5 Badminton Australia extends a very warm welcome to players, officials, parents and visitors to the June Bevan Trophy teams Event and Australasian Under 17 Championships, hosted here in Melbourne by Western Suburbs Badminton Association. The June Bevan has long been the birthplace for elite players commencing their competitive life and aspirations for future representation at Senior level. I hope that, in the years to come, we will continue to see you all participating for your State (and perhaps your Country) as you develop your skills and grow towards your personal goals. I look forward with confidence that, with dedication and effort, this will occur. We at Badminton Australia also extend our thanks and congratulations to the Western Suburbs Badminton Association for again hosting a National tournament. Historically the Committee and volunteers have delivered well run, successful events and I am sure 2013 will continue that tradition. We at BA realise that events such as this are vital to the growth and development of the sport, and understand it takes a huge effort from dedicated volunteers behind the scenes to ensure the Carnival runs smoothly and efficiently. I know you as players also appreciate the team effort to deliver this event for you. I am confident that you will gain positives from this event, whether it is building your future in the sport that we all enjoy so much, or cementing the friendships that can last a lifetime. Competition can and should be fierce on court, but conducted in the spirit of fair play, which, combined with the social activities build strong ties between the 16 teams entered from States, Regions and Countries. On behalf of the Board of Badminton Australia, Matthew Gillie, Andrew Greenway, Kim Low, Loke Poh Wong, and National Executive Director Paul Brettell, play well and have an enjoyable and successful event. Geraldine Brown, President. April, 2013 The June Bevan Carnival has for many years been a feature on the New Zealand calendar and been a significant event for the development of our up and coming talent. For many it is more than a badminton competition, as it fosters cross-tasman friendships as participants vigorously compete for the coveted individual prizes and the highest possible team rankings. I love these kinds of competitions as I know that as people play they develop a love and passion for the great game of badminton and appreciate the great skill, speed and subtlety needed to do well. So from far away in the city of Palmerston North, New Zealand, I wish you all well and encourage you to play hard, play to win and play to enjoy. Bevan Smith President Badminton New Zealand

6 HISTORY OF THE JUNE BEVAN TROPHY Originally conceived as a preparation arena for Under 18 carnival competitions, the 1979 proposal from Victoria for an Under 16 interstate carnival aimed to introduce promising juniors to a carnival atmosphere and help them develop the skills and confidence needed to compete in elite events. It was not until 1983 that the first carnival was held in Newcastle NSW, with three states - New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria competing. The tournament was considered a great success and plans made to repeat it in the following year, again in Newcastle. In honour of former Australian and New South Wales champion, June Bevan, a dedicated coach and supporter of junior badminton, a perpetual trophy was donated for the event, making her name synonymous with under 16 elite competition in Australia and New Zealand saw the inclusion of a team from Auckland New Zealand, then in 1985 Hobart, Tasmania and the Sturt Club from South Australia entered. The same number of teams competed in In 1987, when the event was held in Auckland, team numbers increased with the inclusion of additional New Zealand teams, although Hobart was unable to field a team that year. By 1988, ten teams were competing, with three from Victoria, and three from New Zealand, which were now defined as three Regions - Northern (Auckland), Central (Wellington/Otago) and Southern (South Island). Australian Capital Territory became involved in 1989 as wider interest in the event throughout Australia and New Zealand became evident was again a ten team draw. In 1991 we saw the welcome return of a team from Tasmania and for the first time from the Western Australia town of Geraldton. In 1992 the 10 th anniversary of the under 16 badminton carnival was significant in that it was the first year as an Official Australian Carnival. The A.B.A. by-law regulate the event recognises the dual involvement of Australia and New Zealand and introduced the Australian Under 16 Badminton Singles Championships. In 1996 the tournament held in Castle Hill, Sydney was renamed the Under 17 Australasian Carnival, and a total of 13 teams competed. In 1997 in Auckland New Zealand, sixteen teams played in the competition, making it the largest June Bevan Carnival ever held. The 1999 event was hosted by the Northern Tasmanian Badminton Association in the same centre as they hosted the 1993 event. A total of 14 teams contested the event in 1993, including Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory. The two territories did not field teams in the event, leaving a total of 13 teams competing - 5 teams from New Zealand, 2 from Victoria, 2 from Western Australia, 1 from Queensland, 1 from New South Wales, 1 from South Australia and 1 from host state Tasmania. In 2000 the event was hosted by Badminton Victoria and played at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Fourteen teams contested the event - 6 from New Zealand, 3 from Victoria, 2 from Western Australia, 1 from New South Wales, 1 from Tasmania and 1 from South Australia. Last year s Carnival was held in Hobart. The Under 16/17 June Bevan Trophy holds a warm and sentimental place in the memories of all those who have been involved in, or who have contributed to its success in any way. The record of achievement of many of the young players who began their badminton careers as an Under 16/17 team member will be an inspiration and incentive to many more in the future. This year, 2013, 16 Teams from New Zealand, New Caledonia and all States and Territories of Australia will compete for the June Bevan Trophy.
