2 Chairman s message AIMEX represents three industry sectors and continues to be an extremely active industry body ensuring the concerns, issues and barriers facing businesses are brought to the attention of the state and federal government. AIMEX continues to be at the forefront of global marketing, attending key international boat shows that are relevant to the export, superyacht and commercial sectors and maintaining memberships of several key global industry bodies. Members want information and to this end we now have an excellent library of global market reports and have assisted in developing contacts to enter key global markets. The Economic Impact Study undertaken for the Superyacht sector has been a big boost to the industry and has made both state and federal governments understand the value and opportunities this sector provides to the Australian economy. We will continue to build on this research base so we are able to provide up to date information to this sector going forward. Current exchange rates have also assisted our exporters to be more competitive in global markets and for the commercial sector it has been an interesting year with government spending on defence entering a period of all time high expenditure (outside of war years) with many companies in the supply chain tendering for opportunities within these government contracts. Membership has continued to grow particularly in the superyacht and commercial sectors. We are very aware of the need to continually assess what we are offering as it is critical we continue to be relevant to all 3 sectors and add value to their business. A series of capability and tendering seminars has been extremely successful as was the trade mission to China promoting and educating businesses about the China FTA. 4 The AIMEX Group AIMEX AIMEX (Australian International Marine Export Group) supports and promotes Australian exporters to succeed in global markets. SYA ACMG Superyacht Australia (SYA) promotes Australia as a preferred destination for the global superyacht fleet, including the capability of the Australian industry to service the superyacht fleet. ACMG supporting the commercial marine industry through the global promotion of Australia s commercial vessel and ship building capabilities including repair/refit infrastructure, maritime services, manufacturers of a full range of specific use commercial vessels and associated marine equipment to ensure consistent export sales growth and developing international awareness of all facets of the industry. 5 The AIMEX Group Networking events A critical membership benefit for businesses is the development of platforms where they can meet other members and non members with a view to establishing and building relationships of value to their business. To this end networking and information events have been held in all states across Australia attracting in total over 585 individual businesses. The business transacted from these events has been considerable as have been the alliances, partnerships and sales opportunities developed. Many suggest AIMEX is like a family and everyone goes out of their way to help others where possible. A further programme of networking events is being developed for the coming year with invites being sent to all members. Lobbying AIMEX, Superyacht Australia and ACMG continue to drive exposure for key industry issues via press releases, promotion on the 3 industry sector websites, meetings with key state and federal government officials, development of submissions on key areas of interest to members and undertaking research to be able to provide accurate and meaningful data to members. 6 Activities over past 12 Months ASMEX Conference 185 delegates made up of international and local industry professionals attended the conference with 260 guests attending the gala dinner to grow their network and hear from key industry stakeholders. The event has grown consistently over the past 8 years with a strong mix of industry sectors making this a must attend event for every member. The results are fantastic and the demand shows the importance of the marine awards to key stakeholders. The industry really understands the value of the awards and the recognition their business gets from it. Winners this year were Abell Point Marina, Britton Maritime Systems, Down Under Rally, Echo Yachts, Justin Parer, Paul Darrouzet, Life Cell Marine Safety, Marine Engineering Consultants, Rainman Desalination, SOS Marine, Sydney City Marine, Steber International and Trent Gay. Free Trade Agreement Seminars & CHAFTA Trade Mission FTA (Free Trade Agreement) Seminars were run in Melbourne, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Tasmania, Cairns, Sydney, Perth and Darwin to educate members of the benefits of utilising these international agreements to drive export sales. Following the success of the FTA Seminars it was clear that while Australian business were now well educated to utilise Free Trade Agreements the overseas companies they were dealing with weren't. AIMEX applied for the second round of funding to take a group of 10 Australian businesses to China. This gave 10 companies the opportunity to consolidate their knowledge on the China- Australia Free Trade Agreement and ensure Chinese companies understood how to utilise this agreement. 8 Tendering and Capability Statement Seminars Activities over past 12 Months AIMEX, Superyacht Australia and the Australian Commercial Marine Group hosted a series of 4 Competitive Tendering and Capability Statement Seminars in Tasmania, Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. Presented by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science Entrepreneurs Programme, the four events explored the theory of what makes for effective responses in competitive bidding environments. Participants were able to apply this theory to their own business models and commercial needs to develop ready-to-use proposal content that differentiates them from their competition.
