2 2013 Annual Host Committee JGMS, Jacksonville Gem and Mineral Society We are excited to host the Annual Meetings of the AFMS, SFMS, and ALAA and are striving to insure this will be a great event and that there will be something for everyone to enjoy. News about the meetings and events needs to find its way to as many of our nation s Gem and Mineral societies as it can. This is an attempt to make sure we get as wide a distribution on the announcements on the events as possible to each and every club in America. JGMS is working very hard to make sure your stay and experience are as pleasurable and memorable as possible. Attendees to the meetings will have free access to the Host Show, Star Gazing Picnic and Editors and Webmasters Breakfast. Our Talented members are also creating beautiful table arrangements for the Awards Banquet, which you may get the chance to win and take home. 2

5 Editors and Webmaster Breakfast Sunday 9am The tireless efforts of our Editors and Webmasters that give so much should receive a little something in return. The JGMS Host Society, has decided to support those that keep us all informed by providing a free breakfast for the Editors and Webmaster Breakfast meeting. We want to make sure you are well taken care of. Our breakfast will provide a hot bar of scrambled eggs, grits, bacon and toast with Coffee, juice and pastries. There will be an opportunity at the meeting for noneditors and webmasters who may want to attend to give donations to support this event. This is a gesture to say thank you for everything you do for so many of us! 5

6 Heavens and Earth Lecture Day The special lecture day Heavens and Earth Lecture will include some of the nation s top authorities on Meteorites and regional paleontology. The lecture will be held in conjunction with the JGMS annual show at the Morocco Temple from 8am to 4pm with an hour for lunch. Prices for the event will be $30 for half day (either morning or afternoon) and $50 for full day. There is a grill on site, but 5 minutes away is the Towns Center; an outdoor mall with 25+ restaurants. The speakers for the show will be: Dr. Rhiannon Mayne, professor of Planetary Science and Curator of the Monning Meteorite Collection at Texas Christian University. Dr. Mike Reynolds, former curator at the Smithsonian, former member of the teacher in space program. Dr. Bruce Gellar, University of Colorado speaking about Meteorites. Dr. Daniel Britt, University of Central FL, speaking on Asteroids, comets and Mars. Special guest from NASA (To be announced). Harley Meavis, Florida Geological Survey Department is the Assistant Director to speak about Fossils from Apalachicola (West Florida Region). 6

8 See the Stars and enjoy a Picnic at the beach The Jacksonville Gem and Mineral Society and the Northeast Florida Astronomy Society are joining forces to for a special event. Attendees to the annual meeting will be given an all you can eat free picnic (While supplies last) at Hanna Park at the beach in conjunction with the NEFAS monthly star gazing event. NEFAS will have several telescopes set up to see the stars. This bridge building event is being designed especially for you and your family. Hanna Park is located at 500 Wonderwood Dr, Atlantic Beach FL The stargazing and Picnic will be in lot 8. Attendees need to be in the park no later than 5pm when the gates close to incoming visitors. There is a park entry fee of cost of $3 per vehicle. Once you are in the park, visitors can leave at any time. 8

15 Wildacres Retreat Lapidary classes and AFMS Judging class September 23 rd, the week after the Annual meeting The SFMS would like to invite all members of the AFMS to attend our workshop being held at Wildacres in NC starting September 23 rd, just after the AFMS Annual Meeting. Jay Bowman will be teaching a Judging and Exhibiting class. Since the AFMS judging class had to be cancelled this year, the SFMS has guaranteed this class will not be cancelled. All of our other classes are also open to AFMS members. Wildacres is a beautiful retreat off the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is only available for use by non-profit organizations. Check out their website at The cost is $350 for the week, plus supplies for the class. Class times are 9:00 to 12:15 and 1:30 to 5:00 Tuesday thru Saturday, with Thursday afternoon off. In the evening, relax on the patio, or enjoy evening activities such as a campfire, weather permitting.
