4 PAGE 4 PH: Fax: EMPLOYEE OF THE WEEK Pictured above is Amy MacNeil, the new Recreation Intern working out of the Sydney Mines Recreation office for the Summer. Amy just recently graduated from CBU with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication degree and she is using that acquired knowledge to help plan the many Summer recreation activities on the Northside. When I caught up with her this week she was busy with plans for Canada Day, Bartown Festival and the Johnny Miles Festival along with the many club and team activites. Amy enjoys a wide variety of contemporary music and just loves going to movies. She apparently knows quite a bit about hockey as she is, like me, is a die hard Habs fan. Amy is looking forward to working with the many groups and organizations that make up the Northside recreation Summer program. She is planning to return to studies in the Fall at NCSS in Dartmouth to take Radio & Television Arts Program, so we just might be hearing or seeing her in the media. You can contact this hard working individual at or amylmacneil@cbrm.ns.ca. Be sure to say hello to her when you see her at the various activites this Summer. Good Luck Amy! 7 PAGE 7 The Storytellers The History Of Davis Day From The Miners Museum Website In March of 1925, Cape Breton coal miners were receiving $3.65 in daily wages and had been working part-time for more than three years. They burned company coal to heat company houses illuminated by company electricity. Their families drank company water, were indebted to the company store and were financially destitute. Local clergy spoke of children clothed in flour sacks and dying of starvation from the infamous four cent meal. The miners had fought continuously since 1909 for decent working conditions, an eight-hour day as well as a living wage. The British Empire Steel Corporation (Besco) was controlled by President Roy M. Wolvin and Vice-President J.E. McLurg who defended these conditions by frankly stating Coal must be produced cheaper in Cape Breton, poor market conditions and increasing competition make this an absolute necessity. If the miners require more work, then the United Mine Workers of America District 26 Executive must recommend acceptance of a 20% wage reduction. The stage had been set for a sequence of events that would lead to the tragic death of a union brother and father of 10 children, William Davis. In the early days of 1925, J.E. McClurg added insult to injury by eliminating credit for miners at the company store and further reducing days of work at the collieries. On March 6, 1925, UMWA strategist, JS McLachlan, left with few options, called for the removal of all maintenance men from the collieries; a 100% strike was necessary to do battle with Besco. If the company would not negotiate an end to this deprivation and hunger, the mines would slowly fill with floodwater and die. The company response was brief and derogatory, We hold the cards, they will crawl back to work, they can t stand the gaff. The next two months were filled with grief and hardship; Besco cut off the sale of coal to miners houses and mounted a vigorous public relations campaign to blame the miners for their own predicament. On June 3, 1925, the UMWA withdrew the last ALEX RUSSELL CONTRACTING LIMITED Alex Russell - Certified Installer SIDING - ROOFING - WINDOWS/DOORS PAINTING - APPROVED GRANTS FREE ESTIMATES WE WON T LEAVE YOU HANGING OR OR Wayne & Sons Now Offering 25 Years Experienced Pool Installer Excellent Selection of Pools FINANCING AVAILABLE maintenance men from Besco s power plant at Waterford Lake. In retaliation, the company cut off electricity and water to the Town of New Waterford, which included the hospital filled with extremely sick children. For more than a week the town mayor, P.G. Muise, literally begged company officials to restore electricity and water to his townspeople. Besco ignored his requests. At 10 am in New Waterford, the UMWA was organizing an army of angry miners. They were determined to restore electricity and water to their homes and families; they marched on the Waterford Lake power plant and were met by a wall of armed company thugs on horseback. Before the miners could state their demands, the riders charged the front line firing wildly into the crowd. Gilbert Watson was shot in the stomach he carried the bullet until the day he died in Michael O Handley was shot and trampled by horses. William Davis, an active member of the UMWA was fatally shot through heart by a British Empire Steel Company thug. The miners reaction was swift and decisive. They swarmed the power plant, overpowered the company police and marched them off to the town jail. For several nights afterward, the coal towns were under a state of siege by the miners. They raided the company stores to feed their starving families and then burned the stores to the ground to eliminate the last symbol of corporate greed and servitude in the Cape Breton coalfields. The company stores never re-opened after the coal wars of 1925.The miners promised that no man would ever again work the black seam on Davis Day. They kept that promise ever since. 9 SCHOLARS AND TIARAS: ISLAND PAGEANT GETS MAKE-OVER Emphasis placed on academics and community involvement. The Miss Teen Cape Breton Pageant is returning to Sydney this summer and is open to girls age 14-18, from anywhere on the island.reinstated in the summer of 2011, the competition caters to a new generation of hopefuls and celebrates qualities such as leadership, scholastic achievement, community involvement and positive self-image. The winner will take home the crown and a $1,000 scholarship. We are creating a platform for young women who have worked hard to achieve more for themselves and for their communities, says Sherry MacDonald, pageant director. By taking the emphasis off of beauty and placing it on scholastic achievements and community involvement, this type of pageant can open a lot of doors for the girls. Because the cost of post-secondary education remains a concern for many Cape Breton families, the Miss Teen Cape Breton Pageant aims to lessen the financial burden and help motivated students achieve their goals. This scholarship competition presents an opportunity to reward hard-working girls, to build their confidence and reinforce that making school and community a priority puts them on the right path to success, says MacDonald. We have a number of fun events and charitable activities planned for our delegates throughout Cape Breton s communities this summer. The girls are going to have the time of their lives. The field of delegates will be narrowed to 15 finalists who will go on to compete for the scholarship and crown. The pageant will take place in Sydney in late August. The deadline for applications is Friday, June 29, Registration forms, drop-off locations and additional information about the Miss Teen Cape Breton Scholarship Pageant are available at MaryLynn Hurley, volunteer event co-ordinator adds, We are looking to the community for support. Cape Breton businesses interested in sponsoring a delegate or the night of entertainment are encouraged to contact the pageant team through the website. 10 PAGE 10 Eagles- One of These Nights-Live in New Zealand 1995" (Rock Tapes) - As far as I am concerned there can never be too many live concert DVD s featuring the Eagles on the shelves, and this is the latest one to be released featuring the band s live performance on a rainy night in New Zealand in By the way, I didn t realize that the band s actual name is just Eagles, not The Eagles. If you re going to start a concert off right, do it with a classic; the Eagles do just that with Hotel California. No offense to Glenn Frey, Don Felder, Timothy B. Schmit or Joe Walsh but in my opinion Don Henley is THE VOICE of the Eagles, and this song confirms it. This track is awesome to watch. You get 19 songs on this DVD and what I like most about it is that there s a great cross-section of music from the band s musical history. From their early Country- Rock days there s Tequila Sunrise, Desperado and Take It Easy. They all sound amazing here. The funny thing is if these songs were released today, they d definitely be on the Country charts, but in the 1970 s the Top 40 charts were more diverse than they are now. The band s popularity blew up in 1975 and 1976, with the release of their One of These Nights and Hotel California records. The Eagles became international superstars, America s biggest band in fact. Those albums are well represented here by awesome performances of the songs One Of These Smile by Paul Power Nights, Lyin Eyes, the heavier than usual Eagles song Life In The Fast Lane and the brilliant New Kid In Town. I know some people who absolutely love Timothy B. Schmit s voice so they ll be happy to see the inclusion of the fantastic number Love Will Keep Us Alive. Speaking of that, every member of the Eagles was/is also a solo artist at one point in time, although a few had more success than the others in that regard, so it s nice to see and hear some of their bigger known hit songs performed; Glen Frey s You Belong To The City, Don Henley s Boys of Summer and Dirty Laundry are definite highlights in this concert and totally kick butt. The same thing can also be said for Joe Walsh s wickedly funny Life s Been Good and the rock and roll classic Rocky Mountain Way. All are great songs. Some other tracks included here are Victim of Love, Heartache Tonight and Already Gone, to name a few. This is a great concert to watch and this DVD should be a part of every Eagles fan collection. 12 PAGE 12 COMMUNITY PROFILE - By Kim Rideout - Bras d Or Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club Opening in 1975 the Bras d Or Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club is a very vital part of the community. This non-profit organization has 98 very active members who are always doing something. The organization also has a volunteer Board of Directors who work very hard for the organization. Fundraising is a large part of any non-profit organization and this one has two fundraisers per year. At the present time they are preparing for their Fall Fair which will take place in October. They also have an Easter Basket ticket sale each year. The Club also rents out the facility for various events and this is another source of revenue that helps to maintain expenses. They have many events already booked and they are always happy to assist in any way they can. The organization also provides many events for the members throughout the year. On Tuesday mornings they offer Exercise Classes which run until the end of May and in the afternoon at 2 PM each week they have Crib. Wednesday was a very active day and this week just saw the last line dancing of the year at the club. This is a very popular activity and four of their members are preparing to travel to New Brunswick where they will have the opportunity to learn even more to bring back to the group as they work with an instructor for the USA. The Bras d Or Club holds a monthly social on the last Saturday of each month for their members. They also celebrate Mother s Day and Father s Day for the members each year. Along with these occasions you will see dances being held for many holidays such as Valentine s Day, Halloween, Christmas and New Year s. The Club is always looking for new members and if you are interested in joining they invite you to call the hall at A huge thank you to the members for all of your work in the community!!!
