7 PAGE 7 DON RAY HOME CENTRE Complete Line of Home Renovation Supplies GARAGE PACKAGES TOO!! 1100 MAIN STREET SYDNEY MINES BY PAUL POWER Simple Minds Walk Between Worlds - Simple Minds are a new wave/pop rock band that started way back in 1977, in Glasgow, Scotland and are one of the most successful Scottish bands of all time. A lot of that success lies in the fact that their music was a perfect fit for the 1985 John Hughes movie The Breakfast Club, with the song Don t You (Forget About Me) becoming their best known number-even though they had released 6 albums before that. The band had their musical roots in the whole new wave/punk movement of the late 1970 s but their unique use of guitars, along with synthesizers, set them apart from their peers quite quickly. The band actually took their name from a lyric in David Bowie s 1972 single The Jean Genie and their website has the perfect description of what is one of my favourite bands of all time; Simple Minds have been many things to many people: sound scapers, soundshapers, soundtrack makers, serial chart-toppers. So flash forward 40 years (OMG!) and we have this-studio album number 18 for Simple Minds. The album opens up with the first single that was released last month; Magic is a perfect example of how Simple Minds can basically do a U2 like anthem-yet totally make it their own. That similar rock-oriented vibe can also be found on the track Barrowland Star, which pays homage to the band s famous hometown venue of the same name (the Barrowland). Interestingly enough, this song really sounds like a David Bowie number. Fans of the band s earlier music might recognize hints of their 1985 song Alive and K i c k i n g sneaking in on the fantastic retro track Sense of Discovery here. Granted, the band does have the rock vibe present on many of the songs-but they do find a perfect balance between guitardriven songs and their earliest synth pop/new wave days; In Dreams and Walk Between Worlds reminds me of some of the band s stuff from the 1982 New Gold Dream ( ) album-which to me is their best album ever. The song Utopia has a pure 1980 s retro new wave vibe to it, and Summer breezes through like a blast of fresh air on a summer day-the song has a great bassline and haunting vocals by Jim Kerr. To finish, The Signal and the Noise has a real New Order-like vibe to it with, once again-david Bowie-like vocals. It is a great number. All in all-simple Minds have an awesome musical track record; this album puts a capital A in that Awesome.
