Aconi - Sydney Mines - North Sydney Make Sure You Get Out And Vote The coming byelection in Cape Breton North is an important one and you should exercise your right to get out and vote. There are many issues facing the residents of Cape Breton North and you will need strong and decisive leadership in Halifax in the next few years to make sure your concerns are addressed. The candidates have all discussed the topics and outlined their platforms. What they need now is the support of the voters who will let them know by their vote how well they support the political platform. 2 CENTS WORTH What Do You Think Our Northside Communities Need The Most? We surveyed people in the Point Aconi, Florence, North Sydney, Bras d Or and Sydney Mines areas and here s what they had to say. A movie theatre would be nice - Pat S. A dog park so you can walk your dog - Cara M. A place where you can change your car s oil quickly - Bob J. A restaurant that specializes in breakfasts like Cora s restaurant - Emily P. I would really like to see a dinner theatre. I know it would be difficult for a year long operation but certainly seasonable in the Summer. It would be nice to see some local plays and have a pleasant meal as well - Flora C. Cape Breton has always had a vocal candidate at the Nova Scotia Legislature who made sure our special needs and concerns were properly addressed and resolved. Check this paper for the candidate of your choice if you need a drive to the polling or where your polling station is located. The most important thing you can do is to put your X on the ballot to let the candidate know how you feel. Don t become disillusioned and refuse to vote. Now is the itme to let your vote do the talking! HAPPY FATHER S DAY To all our Dads on this special day, we wish you all the Happiness and Peace that this special day brings. Fatherhood is a challenge at the best of times and we pause on this Sunday to honor the deeds and acts of fathers both living and those who have passed on. These are the most precious times in the lives of your children and the example you show them will help mold their character and the way they act in their adult lives. May you always have the wisdom of Solomon, the patience of Job and the ability to laugh even when you are not feeling it. Happy Fathers Day Dad - You deserve it!! 4 PAGE 4 Around the Town I ve been spending some time this past week fishing for trout at Little Pond in Florence. I met many Northsiders and we had a lot of friendly talks waiting for the fish to bite. One of the things that many of these friendly folks really liked to hear was that we are planning to have a radio station on the Northside. many believe this is so long overdue. I m looking forward to providing music, news, club information and storytelling on KLEE RADIO. We will need many volunteers both on air and around the office to assist us. That s what a community radio station is all about. We have a fund raising concert scheduled for August 5 and you ll be hearing more about that in the upcoming weeks... I want to send out a little bit of praise to all the fathers who wil be celebrating Fathers Day this coming weekend. Many today will be remembering fathers who have passsed on and still more will be separated from their children and will need a day to help make that separation more tolerable. HAPPY FATHER S DAY and may you enjoy the many perks of the day and our prayer is for you to be the best father to your children while you can still have an influence on their lives, it s so important!... I can t wait for this year s Bartown Festivities to get underway. I understand there will be a lot of special talent which I just love to hear, more coming later as the program comes together... Working on the Northside all week means I take my meals at the various eating establishments and I just want to point out how hard the cooks and wait staff work on a daily basis. Remember that when you pay your bill... Congratulations are extended to Baby Jessie James son of Lisa Walters and Justin Tanner from Denise at the Waterside Restaurant... and while I was down on the waterfront, I stopped in at the Chill Zone and spoke with Joyce Simms, She asked me to send congratulations to her grandson Christopher Bonnar on his upcomiing Graduation - Love, from Nanna and Poppy... 5 MEET THE CANDIDATES JONATHAN DEAN PLEDGES TO HOLD MUNICIPALITIES TO ACCOUNT As part of his Taxpayers Agenda for CB North, Jonathan Dean pledged to hold municipalities to account by introducing legislation to force municipal councils to hold referenda on tax rate increases. Given the technological advances of the 21 st century, there is no good reason why municipalities shouldn t be able to hold referenda in order to seek public approval for future increases in the property tax rate. It is certainly true that Nova Scotians are taxed enough and holding municipalities to account would protect taxpayers from unwanted tax gouges, says Dean, who is the Leader of the Atlantica Party of Nova Scotia. The pledge is an important peg of the Atlantica Party s Taxpayers Agenda, a direct response to the concerns of rural property taxpayers in CBRM who fear that the Province, with the support of municipalities, will remove the Capped Assessment Program on property tax assessments, resulting in four-fold increases in the amount of property tax paid year-over-year. The Taxpayers Agenda would include the following: 1. Keep the CAP : Maintain the Capped Assessment Program to ensure that property owners are not gouged with ever-increasing tax bills. 2. Hold municipalities to account: Require that municipalities hold referenda in order to increase property tax rates. 3. Fight for a tax system that respects Nova Scotia taxpayers: Work with municipalities and citizens to develop an alternative municipal tax structure that is fair, more effective and uniform, with the aim of abolishing the property tax by Jonathan Dean will be campaigning on the Taxpayers Agenda as well as the Atlantica Party s flagship Five Point Democracy Plan. Dean has received positive reviews of his plan from concerned property owners in CB North, who are happy to see a new party on the provincial scene supporting real alternatives to the failed status quo. The Atlantica Party (AP) is Nova Scotia s newest registered political party, having been officially recognized by Elections Nova Scotia on March 8, The Atlantica Party is Nova Scotia s only principled alternative and Nova Scotia s only fiscally conservative party. AP is a grassroots pro-democracy movement in the form of a political party intent on giving Nova Scotians a real option for reform; reform of our electoral system, reform of our political system and a set of economic reforms aimed at making Nova Scotia prosperous. WHY WE SAY IT - Cold Shoulder - When a guest would over stay their welcome as house guests, the hosts would (instead of feeding them good, warm meals) give their too-long staying guests the worst part of the animal, not warmed, but the COLD SHOULDER. North Sydney Fire Hall Members & Guests Our Pet of The Week is Tyson Cann. His owners are Karen and Earl Cann and Kolton Beaton. He will be 3 years old in September and he came to us when he was just 6 weeks old. He certainly has been a great addition to our family and now we couldn t live without him. He loves his treats and toys and loves all the attention he gets. He is very well behaved and loves to curl up by the woodstove in the winter. He is precious to us and we love him dearly. Armstrong Memorial Branch #19 MONDAYS Bingo 8 PM UPSTAIRS Dance June 25th Killin Time 9:00-1:00 Archibald Avenue - North Sydney Members & Guests The Storytellers I thought I d tell you a little story about Father s Day and the logic that a young boy would use when buying a present for his father. One small boy, who lived in the Ashby area of Sydney, wanted to earn his own money by doing various chores and errands for the neighbours so that he could buy his father a present for Father s Day. With the money saved by these various jobs, the boy searched for that special gift for his father but, with a limited amount of cash, all the gifts he wanted to buy cost more than he had earned. Finally the young man decided to go to what was referred to then as a White Elephant sale or what we would call a flea market today. The young boy searched diligently and finally settled on a book since his father was a reader. He saw that the pages were gold leaf and shiny and the cover was like leather. He proudly paid for the book with his money and went home and even wrapped the package himself. The book was a big hit on Father s Day and his father showed the book to all the visitors and they all smiled and laughed each time. It was not till many years later than the young innocent boy found out the book was a sex manual. The fillers usually consisted of triva and interesting facts. The apprenticeship was 6 years long so you can guess how many fillers I set. Here are a few to give you an insight into the trivia world. 160 cars can drive side by side on the Monumental Axis in Brazil the world s widest road. A 10 gallon hat holds only 6 pints of liquid. A jiffy is actually a time measurement it s length is 1/100th of a second. A jumbo jet uses 4000 gallons of fuel to take off. A quarter has 119 groves along its edge while a dime has 118. Dreamt is the only English word that ends in mt. Every time you lick a stamp, you are consuming 1/10th of a calorie. And then there is this protocol for statues which I never knew existed. If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle; if the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died as a result of wounds received in battle; if the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes. Who knew? The only reason I brought this up at all is because somebody asked me in town recently where I get all that weird stuff in the paper. Here are a few more that you might find interesting. You blink over twenty million times a year. In 1984, a Canadian farmer began renting ad space on his cows. In every episode of Seinfeld there is a Superman somewhere.
