The annual concert will have a mainstage featuring Alter Ego, Kintyre Lite, Southern Son, Michael Lloyd Trio, Brandon Collier, and Dave Whitty. Following the mainstage, at 10 pm, the concert will move into the beverage tent with music from local celtic rock group The Privateers. The Privateers formed during Sydney's 2009 Tall Ships visit, and will surely have you dancing in the aisles with music from such artists as Great Big Sea, The Pogues, The Rankins, Rawlins Cross, Spirit of the West, and many more of your favorites. 7 THIS WEEK IN CBRM - - thisweek@kleeradio.com PAGE 7 DON RAY HOME CENTRE Complete Line of Home Renovation Supplies GARAGE PACKAGES TOO!! 1100 MAIN STREET SYDNEY MINES Fahrenheit I like when literary classics are made into films, and Ray Bradbury s 1953 novel Fahrenheit 451 is a literary classic. Granted, the novel was adapted for film first in 1966 by Pinewood studios in England. For it s time that adaptation was great, and it was pretty faithful to the book. For those of you who may not know the story it s set in what is described as a dystopian future where society is tightly controlled-and the government sends out firemen to destroy all literature, to prevent freethinking and revolution. In this 2018 remake some changes were made to reflect the times; the only reading allowed is on the internet, called the 9, where everything is censored and most books are banned, only to be burned by the firemen if found. The firemen are part of the Ministry, a fascist dictatorship who blames unhappiness, mental illness, and questioning authority on reading the wrong books. Guy Montag, is one of the firefighters who goes about his day-to-day job without question, and believing if he follows his fireman father s footsteps he is making a difference in protecting society. This all comes to an end (or a new beginning) when he meets an informant named Clarisse, who makes him question his actions, beliefs and convictions by sharing the real history of America-and the rise of the Ministry. Guy is played by Michael B. Jordan (no relation to the other guy with the same name) and Michael recently showed up in Black Panther, Creed and Justice League -so he s a good actor, but in this case putting him up against Michael Shannon (his boss-captain Beatty) was a bit of a bad s t e p because as an a c t o r Michael Shannon always brings a smoldering intensity (no pun intended) to every role, and here he upstages Jordan throughout the story. That s not a shot at Jordan; it s just a fact. Here s a few interesting sidenotes on this movie: Mel Gibson was planning on directing it, with Tom Cruise as the lead-but conflicting schedules nixed those plans. Brad Pitt was also being considered for the lead role. Also, author Ray Bradbury never did scientifically confirm that 451 degrees Fahrenheit was the point where books would burn - he got the guesstimate from a fire chief. Bradbury liked the answer for a title and went with it. However, it s judgment time and in the case of this moviethe 1966 version was better, and the actual book even more so; this remake can t really hold a candle to either. So I d recommend watching the original, or even better, read the book. 8 PAGE 8 NORTHSIDE THIS WEEK - - thisweek@kleeradio.com CBRM COMMUNITY NEWS ITEMS St. Andrew s Presbyterian Church Yard Sale & Bake Sale The weather outside may not feel like summer with the cold winds and rain, but that s not damping the spirits of the congregation of St. Andrew s while they prepare for their annual Yard Sale and Bake Sale. They are busy gathering up items, sorting and pricing each individual piece that comes in from donors. On Saturday, June 30 th at 9 a.m until 1 p.m. you will see rows of tables displayed in the church yard, filled with items. Also if you get hungry, there will be hotdogs and pop for sale at a low price. At the back of the field you will find our Bake Table filled with lots of homemade goodies, from Pies, Loaves, Tea Biscuits and a whole lot more. Bev Aker is in charge of our Bake Table and if you know Bev at all you will know she is a fabulous baker. Bev use to work at the Northside General Hospital and did the baking for a number of years and has recently retired. When there is a canteen at a concert, Bev is always called upon to bake cookies or if we need baking done for a Bake Table, Bev knows she will receive a call to help out. The Yard Sale is an annual event at St. Andrew s since they started fundraising ten years ago. With the declining congregations churches are forced to fundraise to help with their yearly expenses. St. Andrew s is no different and will continue to fundraise in the years to come. This year there are a number of events planned at St. Andrew s. We have the Barra MacNeil s concert in August along with the Celtic Colours in October and a few more in between. But for now the congregation is focusing on the Yard Sale and Bake Sale. So mark this event on your calendars for Saturday, June 30 th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Andrew s Presbyterian Church in Sydney Mines in the church yard.if the weather does not co-operate it will be held in the church hall. So grab a friend and come on down and take a look at what we have.you never know what will catch your eye. North Sydney Museum The North Sydney Museum and North Sydney Visitor Information Centre is open Monday to Friday 10 am to 5 pm. Please stop in and say hi to Myra and Carmen. Johnny Miles Race will be run August 4th, the Parade will be held at 6:00 PM and Luncheon Aug. 5th -1:00-4:00 C.B.R.M. COMMUNITY NEWS BRANCH 008 LEGION CANADA DAY EVENTS CANADA DAY - Flag Raising at 9:30, Breakfast from 9:45 to 11:00, Doll Carriage parade and Bicycle Parade 11;30-11:45, Face Painting LADIES AUXILIARY OUTING - Open to all Branch 008 Ladies. Cost is $15.00 each and includes your meals for the day also fun, Bingo and Laughter. Bring your own refreshment. BRANCH 008 GOLF TOURNA- MENT - $50.00 each will be held June 24th. Call G. MacIntosh at TROOP RUN - Our Troop Run will be visiting our Branch on June 26th at 6:00 pm. We know it is our Bingo Night so you may see a new face helping out the girls. They will just have a Meet & Greet before Bingo starts. We will have a presentation to give to them in support of The CLANSMAN MOTEL Chicken Wing Night SATURDAYS Best Wings on The Northside! Children s Wish Fund which you help to raise. These troops are from our ships in Halifax and they run to Sydney Mines and return to Sydney and back to Halifax and then Port Hawkesbury. So please come out and support our troops - Thank You - W.
