3 Welcome Letter Willard Airport University of Illinois 1 Airport Road Savoy, IL Dear New Employee: Welcome! You will soon be a part of Willard ATCT/TRACON. Your commitment toward achieving this success is commendable. A career as an Air Traffic Controller is challenging and rewarding. Your first priority as a member of this agency is to ensure the safety of the flying public this is an awesome responsibility. You will be in an exciting training phase when you report here to your new facility. Your training will consist of classroom, simulation and, ultimately, on-the-job training. We'd like to tell you a little bit about your new facility. We are allocated: One Air Traffic Manager, 1 Administrative Assistant, 3 Front Line Managers, 1 Support Specialist, and up to 21 ATCS (some in various stages of training). Your new facility is located at 1 Airport Road, Savoy, IL. Parking is provided free at the base of the tower. On your first day, please report at 8:00 am to the tower. There is a security system at the door that you will need to ring. We will come down to let you in and welcome you. As part of the Gateway District, we are extremely proud to provide the highest level of safety and quality customer service. 5 Willard Airport History Willard Airport is one of only a handful of commercial airports in the country owned and operated by an educational institution. Willard Airport, often referred to by its FAA designation "CMI," was named for former University of Illinois president Arthur Cutts Willard. Formal dedication of the airport took place on October 26, 1945 with the first scheduled airline service in The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign established its nationally recognized Institute of Aviation at Willard Airport in The University takes full advantage of training and research opportunities made possible by the location of the Institute on the grounds of Willard Airport. Today Willard Airport is served by two major air carriers that operate morning, afternoon and evening flights. Willard Airport is also home to a private jet service, FlightStar. 5

8 Policies Reporting for Duty Employees are to report for their assigned shift on time. If a situation arises that will prevent you from reporting on time, call the Tower and ask for the Front Line Manager on duty at Hours of Duty During your first few weeks in training you will be on Administrative duties and working 8 ½ hours each day allowing for a 30 minute lunch break. We have a few Fast Food restaurants near-by or you may bring your lunch. We have 2 refrigerators in the breakroom for your convenience. Operational personnel here are assigned to work 8 hour shifts unless assigned an administrative day. Employees working an 8 hour shift are considered immediately recallable while on break and thus may not leave the facility during their shift, unless they have obtained management approval. Parking The Willard airport has provided the FAA with free parking near the tower and is marked as such. You will receive a University of IL parking tag on your first day which must be displayed at all times within the parking lot. Employees are required to update their vehicle information with the tower s Administrative Assistant. Security Commercial airports across the nation are mandated to provide security. The Willard Airport strives do everything possible to improve security while keeping the interest of our users front and foremost. Building Access Proximity cards are needed to gain access to all facility exterior doors. Proximity cards are also used to gain entrance to the TRACON and the Tower CAB. Security is vitally important. Please ensure that you follow all required security measures to ensure a safe environment for all employees. 8

9 FAA ID Cards FAA photo ID cards must be worn and visible at all times when on FAA property. When you first arrive to the tower one of our first items to complete will be to take your photo for your ID card. Guests and Visitors Approval for guests must be obtained from management. After obtaining approval, the employee must advise the Front Line Managers of the upcoming visit, ensure the guests are registered and escorted at all times. Cell Phones Cell phones must be in the off position while in the operational areas. Feel free to leave these in your locker that we will provide to you. Personal reading materials and other electronic devices are not permitted in operational areas. Mail Personal mail and package deliveries are not permitted at the facility. Smoking There is a smoking room located on the first floor and allowed outside near the base of the tower. Please dispose of cigarettes in the receptacle that is provided. 9

10 Who is Raytheon? Raytheon provides air traffic control training support to the FAA through contract DTFAWA-06-C Training Support for Air Traffic (TSAT). TRAINING SUPPORT can vary with each developmental and may include: - Classroom and Simulation instruction for qualification training - Classroom and Simulation instruction for proficiency training - Developing, revising and updating course materials and simulation Scenarios - Computer Based Instruction (CBI) lab management and CBI lesson development - Administration and maintenance of air traffic controller personnel s training Records - Tracking and reporting air traffic controller and supervisor currency and Certifications 10

11 Local Area Information Arts, agriculture, sports... and the list goes on. From reindeers to Renoir, here are some of Champaign County's must-see attractions... The city has a rich mid-western heritage and typical climate known to the middle of the United States. It can be frigid in the winter months and hot and humid in the summer. The Champaign area has many events and attractions to keep you busy but, if you feel the need for something more, Chicago is approximately a 3 hour drive to the north, Indianapolis is about 2 hours to the East and St. Louis is 2 ½ hours to the southwest. The Champaign/Urbana population is 114,999 (estimated in 2007) With smaller area comunities increasing the population even more. The local economy is driven by the University of Illinois, with a student population of over 42,000. The average commute is 15 minutes, compared to 26 minutes nationally. Some famous names that have called Champaign home are: Alison Krauss, singer; Bonnie Blair, Olympic speed skater; George Will, columnist and TV commentator and Jennie Garth, actress. 11

12 The Champaign area has much to offer in the areas of shopping, entertainment and family activities. Places such as Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum ( Orpheum Children s Science Museum ( and the Early American Museum ( 12

13 Events & Activities From the excitement of Big Ten sports to award winning parks, Champaign County has a variety of recreation. Assembly Hall The Assembly Hall is a multi-purpose facility that features the largest capacity of any Illinois arena outside of Chicago. It has nearly 16,000 permanent seats and large floor space making it the perfect venue for all types of athletic events. The Assembly Hall is home of the Fighting Illini Men's and Women's Basketball teams along with hosting a variety of concerts and shows. 13

14 Sholem Aquatic Center This $7 million aquatic center is located within Centennial Park and includes the following features: 2 zero depth entry pools with spray features, 3 water rides including a lazy river, body flume slide and a tube ride in the river, eight 25 yard lap lanes, shade and sun areas, family restrooms, concessions, bathhouse, and rental areas. Stone Creek Golf Course Opened in 1999, this Tim & Dick Nugent design features one of the most enjoyable 18-hole public championship golf courses in downstate Illinois. Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve Lake of the Woods County Park is a 900-acre preserve that features an 18-hole regulation golf course, a 9-hole par 3 course and practice range, fishing, hiking, picnicking, cross-country skiing, sledding, the HI-tower bell carillon and observation area, 3.3 mile bicycle/pedestrian path, the Early American Museum, Mabery Gelvin Botanical Gardens, building rentals and programs. 14

15 Dining You ll find many of the national names you are familiar with, from Applebee s to The Bread Company to Starbucks, but also check out some of the local favorites listed on the community websites. If you d like an area with a concentration of local restaurants, try the downtown area, including E. Main, N. Neil and N. Walnut Streets. This area has a wide variety of restaurants from Thai to American Grill to Italian. Or, check out the eclectic dining options in the campus town area of E. Green and S. Wright streets. From a chocolate bar to BBQ, you ll find something new to try. 15
