4 NEWARK AIRPORT Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) has long been on the forefront of aviation history. Opening in 1928, it is the nation s oldest airfield and home to the nation s first commercial airline terminal and first operating control tower. The airport was built on 68 acres of marshland by the City of Newark and quickly became the world's busiest commercial airport. In 1935, Amelia Earhart led the dedication of this landmark terminal building. (Only London s Croydon Aerodrome predates the Newark terminal.) Located partly in Newark and partly in Elizabeth, Newark is located only eight (8) miles from Manhattan, serving a critical role for the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area. During World War II, it was operated by the Army Air Corps. After the Port Authority took over the airport in 1948, the agency immediately began making major improvements. It added an instrument runway, a terminal building, a control tower and an air cargo center. It built the Central Terminal Area, Port Authority Administration Building, the Central Heating and Refrigeration Plant, and taxiways and roadways. All of which opened in the early 1970s. In 1989, a twobuilding maintenance complex opened as well. In the 1990s, even more improvements were added. In 1996, the International Arrivals Facility opened in Terminal B and the Monorail (now AirTrain Newark) was launched. In May 2003, a 325-foot control tower was commissioned, the fourth in the airport s history. 4

5 NEWARK TOWER Today s air traffic controllers work in a state-of the-art control tower that was completed in May The tower is nearly twice as tall as its predecessor at 303 feet tall. We handle over 1,300 operations a day in one of the busiest and most congested airspace in the country. Newark Liberty International Airport is currently the nation s 14 th busiest airport which contributed to Newark Tower s facility upgrade to an ATC-11 in June Until November of 2011, Newark was home to its main carrier: Continental Airlines. The New York Class Bravo Airspace, being one of the most heavily congested in the nation, is being redesigned. The current airspace is 20 nautical miles wide and extends up to 7000 feet. Over 1.8 million flights operate annually within this confined airspace. The airspace redesign team is tasked with maintaining the current level of safety while improving safety and efficiency. 5
