4 Manassas Tower Today FAA s FIRST RECYCLED ATC TOWER! Manassas Tower was commissioned on March 19, Dismantled a surplus 60- foot tall air traffic control tower in Englewood, Co was trucked 1700 miles across the country, and was re-erected here in Manassas Virginia. The concept of the project goes back to September 1990 when the FAA Administrator Mr. James B. Busey and Eastern Region Administrator Daniel J. Peterson told Virginia aviation officials at a Listening Session at Manassas, If you establish a tower, the FAA will equip it and staff it. Virginia Department of Aviation requested that funds be provided because the largest general aviation airport did not have a tower. In an unprecedented move the State of Virginia offered to fund 80% and the city of Manassas agreed to fund 20% of the cost to buy and relocate a tower that had formerly served Arapaho County Airport in Colorado. The tower had been discovered by Ken Jacobs of Washington ADO. A 1970 vintage Hunt Company structure like the ones at Northeast Philadelphia, Teterboro and Poughkeepsie Airports it is made of bolted steel girders covered with aluminum siding. It took three trucks one week to haul this tower across country Mr. Dave Arnold was the first Manager of the Tower from Dulles and the Manassas Tower dedication ceremonies took place on April 16,

7 Policies Reporting for Duty Please use the telephone located on the outside of the building and dial ext 22 and the secretary will escort you into the building. Please bring all pertinent information issued to you from Human Resources Department. This is important in order to finalize the application process. Hours of Duty Initially, you will be assigned to the Training Department: your training manager is Marilyn Martin (Front Line Manager) Hours of training will be Monday Friday hours will be 8-4:30 (unless otherwise specified) Parking We are assigned 20 FAA spaces for parking by the Manassas Regional Airport. One handicap spot located to the right corner of the building, FAA 1 is for Tech Ops, FAA 2 is assigned to the Manager, FAA3- Front Line Manager, FAA4- Administrative Assistant; FAA 5-20 is for ATC s and visitors. Security Security is of the highest priority. Badges are to be worn at all times. There are special security measures when answering FAA official phones and the handling of aircraft. Security will be a part of your training. Windows in the hallway leading to the main offices are to locked and secure at all times. You have access to the gated court yard located in the rear of the building. 7

8 FAA ID Cards ID badges will be issued through Headquarters in Washington DC. Keycards and keys will be issued by the FLM or Admin Assistant upon check in to gain access to the building. Guests and Visitors Guest and visitors must ALWAYS sign themselves in and out (logbook) located at the Administrative Assistant desk. A tour guide will be assigned to each group upon arrival to the tower. Temporary ID badges will be issued to all visitors before leaving the reception area. All electronic devices must be turned off while visiting the tower cab. No loud talking is allowed, Cell Phones Cell phones are not allowed in the tower cab. You may use them on your breaks in an area away from the operation room. This is strictly adhered to as an interference with air traffic system could occur if they are on in the tower cab. 8

10 Attractions in the Metro Area Downtown Washington DC clearly displays reverence for its history. The Washington Monument is the most prominent structure in Washington, D.C. and one of the city s early attractions. It was built in honor of George Washington, who led the country to independence and then became its first president. The Monument is shaped like an Egyptian oblelist, stands /8 tall, and offers views in excess of thirty miles. It was finished on December 6, Maya Ying Linn conceived her design as creating a park within a park -- a quiet protected place unto itself, yet harmonious with the site. To achieve this effect she chose polished black granite for the walls. Its mirror like surface reflects the surrounding trees, lawns, monuments, and the people looking for names. The memorial's walls point to the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. The 58,191 names are inscribed in chronological order of the date of the casualty, showing the war as a series of individual human sacrifices and giving each name a special place in history. "The names would become the memorial," Lin said. 10

The Manassas Mall includes dozens of national retailers, unique shops and clothiers in a delightful environment. Manassas Farmers' Market The Manassas Farmers' Market is located in Old Town Manassas. This Market has been serving Manassas for 23 years and always opens on the first Thursday in April and the first Saturday in April. The Thursday Market is located inside the Harris Pavilion, 9201 Center Street and closes after the first Thursday in November. The pavilion needs time to convert to ice skating. The Saturday Market is located in parking lot B beside the Train Depot and will remain open until the last Saturday before Thanksgiving. Both locations are in the heart of Old Town. The best of the freshest local produce at an open-air market. Market Hours This year's market will open April 2 and close November 5. Thursday Market 7:00am - 1:00pm. This year's market will open April 4 and close November 21.Saturday Market 7:30 am - 2:30pm. 14
