4 HISTORIC ROANOKE RAIL WALK 1-5 Hours / Self Guided Did you know that Roanoke s existence as a city is directly attributed to its railroad activity? Among Roanoke s many monikers is Magic City, thanks to the quick perhaps magical? growth of the city after the Shenandoah Valley Railroad arrived to junction with Norfolk & Western (previously known as the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad). The Roanoke Rail Walk tells the story about Roanoke s rail history, both visually and audibly: There's a platform, signals, whistles, plaques and storyboards with information about the events that formed this history. There's even a radio scanner at one point that allows listeners to hear chatter from engineers and dispatchers. This unique and historic walkway connects to The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center via The Market Square Walkway Pedestrian Bridge and connects the O. Winston Link Museum and the Virginia Museum of Transportation, both excellent railroad museums with plenty of photography, locomotives and train cars displayed. This is a wonderful way to peak into Roanoke s past while celebrating it s future with the arrival of Amtrak in The Rail Walk is a self-guided tour located just outside the front doors of The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center.

5 VISIT BLACK DOG SALVAGE 1-3 hours / Self Guided Black Dog Salvage is an architectural salvage business and Design Center located in Roanoke, VA and home to DIY Network's Salvage Dawgs. Black Dog Salvage specializes in the reclamation, repurposing and resale of architectural, commercial, and industrial elements and fixtures including salvaged mantels, doors, windows, stained glass, wrought iron, vintage plumbing & hardware, period lighting, art tile, unique old house parts, gates, garden statuary, industrial & commercial fixtures, antique store counters and much more. Black Dog Salvage was created in 1999 to provide a home for Southwestern Virginia s architectural past. The brainchild of entrepreneurs Mike Whiteside and Robert Kulp and inspired by Molly, Black Dog s namesake. 6 Mill Mountain Park 1-5 Hours / Varies Based on Activity / Self Guided This 568-acre regional park is maintained by Roanoke Parks and Recreation and offers an abundance of recreation opportunities. Within the park boundaries you will find the Roanoke Star and two overlooks, Discovery Center, 10 miles of multiuse trails, Mill Mountain Wildflower Garden and outdoor classroom, a unique playground, the Mill Mountain Zoo, picnic area and pavilion with grills and acres of natural beauty. Located less than 5 minutes from downtown Roanoke, the trails at Mill Mountain Park are some of the best in the area. The trails feature Roanoke's highest point - the summit of Mill Mountain (1703 ft.) and the Roanoke Star.
