3 Dear Scouts and Scouters, Your Troop is invited to attend the SoQualoochee Survivor Camporee with the Survivor-man Challenge. This year s theme is Survivor. The Camporee dates are October 21st 23rd, This registration packet should help you understand the Camporee so you can publicize it to your Troop and Be Prepared. The Camporee is a trail event, with Tribes (patrols) of Scouts carrying their needed supplies around a trail course, stopping at stations along the way to test their skills and earn points. Points will be earned by solving problems, using basic scout skills, and by working together. Most stations will be manned stations, some will be unmanned. Manned stations will have two adults there to give instructions and to score the Tribes based on knowledge, teamwork, skill level, and time (if applicable). Each station will have its own unique set of scoring criteria. This camporee will be like others in the past with a high emphasis on fire starting and survival. Some stations the Tribes will complete on their own and other stations they will compete against another Tribe. If you have not yet liked our SoQua District Facebook page, please do so soon. This will be our primary avenue for posting up-to-date information as well as hints and tips. These hints and tips just might help you come out on top at the end of the weekend!!! Please make sure to read this entire package as event information is detailed. We need Troops to provide at least 2 adult judges to help man stations. With many exciting activities planned for the 20+ Troops and over 300 Scouts and Scouters, we need your help! If there are any additional adults in your Troop who would like to assist with the weekend, help would be appreciated. If you are interested in being on the Camporee Committee, or in helping with planning future Camporees, please let us know. Fresh ideas are always welcome for these events. We are looking forward to seeing all of you at the Camporee in October!!! Chris Williams SoQua District Camporee Chair VoyageurArt@yahoo.com or (828) SoQua Facebook Event Page
4 Camporee Event Specific Information General Camporee Information The Camporee is a trail event, with Tribes (patrols) of Scouts carrying supplies around a trail course, stopping at stations along the way to test skills and earn points. Points will be earned by solving problems, using basic scout skills, and working together. Most stations will be manned, some will be unmanned. Manned stations will have two adults to give instructions and to score units based on knowledge, teamwork, skill level, and time (if applicable). Each station will have its own unique set of scoring criteria. Everyone will begin the event trail at the same station, at 8:30 am, in the large pavilion next to the parade field. To help avoid congestion at stations, once your Tribe has completed the first event station, you will be given instructions on which station to go to next, and in which direction to travel on the trail (clock-wise or counter clock-wise). The event trail will be open from 8:30-11:30 am, then from 1:00-3:00 pm. The event trail will close at 3:00 pm, no exceptions. Some of the skills you will be tested on: (***CRITICAL) Knots/Lashings Alternate fire starting *** Campfire building Kim s game First aid Survival Skills *** Compass Teamwork Ability to properly cook rice*** Scoring will be based on the following: The ability to complete the task Time (where applicable) Accuracy of knowledge (Knots, lashings, info from unmanned stations) Team work Creativity Scout Spirit Campsite judging will also be part of the Tribe s overall score. Unit campsite inspections will be conducted on Saturday during the running of the events. Campsite points will be added to your Camporee score sheet when your Tribe turns them in on Saturday, after finishing the trail event. Do not underestimate these points. Campsite points could move you into first place!!! Between 11: 30 am and 1:00 pm the event trail will be put on hold for a walk-up lunch on the dining hall porch, an obstacle course, and tug of war. The Obstacle Course is a reward challenge!!! Tribes will go head-to-head, and the Tribe with the fastest time will receive a reward that will be announced at the campfire! It will be worth it, so do your best. You will get a little wet, so plan on having water shoes or a change of shoes, socks, and clothes. (No bare feet on the course)
5 The Survivor-man Challenge This is an optional event that units can choose to participate in. You must sign up the number of Tribes that want to compete when you register for the camporee. Some of your Tribe members will have to do more than one leg of this race, but use all your members if you can. 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd place awards will be handed out at the campfire on Saturday night. This challenge will begin at 3:30 pm. You will need a small day bag for holding puzzle pieces collected along the race, and a mountain bike in proper working condition, with fully inflated tires and helmet for each tribe competing. This is a current listing for the different legs of this race, but is subject to change. BIKER Biker carries day bag with them from entrance of CDB to Catawba Campsite & 1st puzzle piece. Your time stops when you have correctly assembled the puzzle. Survivor Auction & Judged Supper ALL registered Tribes will be required to participate in our Survivor Auction at 5:30pm. All Tribes will meet at 5:30pm at the main flag pole, in front of Roberson Lodge. Then a judged cooking competition for a survivor themed dinner on Saturday afternoon. Tribes will be eligible to receive a separate 1 st, 2 nd or 3 rd place ribbon for best meal. Each Tribe will receive a set amount of money to bid on items that will help flavor your one-pot meal. Bid wisely and you may come away with some good ingredients to make a winning meal. The base ingredients will be provided by staff. Judges will be at your campsites at 6:15 pm to begin the judging of your meals you ve prepared with only the items you won at auction (A Scout is Trustworthy). Be sure you have mess kits, a large pot and utensils for cooking for each Tribe. (Not all scouts will be willing to eat Survivor Meal.) Make sure to bring snacks and beverage supplement supper (not a part of the judged meal). Saturday Supper Score sheet: possible 30 points total Overall appearance (not burnt or raw) Score: 1-5 Overall Taste Score: 1-5 Would you recommend this recipe? 6 Tribe Information For this camporee, patrols will be Tribes. They will come up with a unique tribal name and are encouraged to make a flag for their Tribe. All members of your Tribe will need to wear the same color shirts, they may be your troop s class b shirts or just shirts of the same color (no inappropriate logos). Tribe sizes are limited to a minimum of four scouts and a maximum of eight. Tribes with fewer than four members may have trouble performing some of the events. Since Tribe size is important, small Troops or Venture Crews may combine together with other units to make a full Tribe. In this case make sure that there is only ONE Tribe Leader and that he or she is identified and in charge of the Tribe. Price Although this is a SoQua / Cataloochee District sponsored event, Boy Scouts and Venturers from around the Council are welcome to attend. Remember that registration is on a first come first serve basis, the Camporee is limited to 30 Tribes. The cost for the Camporee is $15 per person. Your registration fee includes: Bandanna, Patch, Saturday bagged lunch & Saturday supper. Back Patches There will be back patches available to purchase at $15 each (see registration form). We have to have at least 50 purchased to place an order so please promote the back patch. If we don t have at least 50 then the money for the back patches will be refunded to your Troop. Registration The attached registration form, unit roster and tour permit must be returned to the council service center by 5:00pm on Friday, October 7th, Tribe names cannot be changed after the deadline. Class-A Uniforms Camporee participants need to wear T-Shirts of the same color (no inappropriate logos) for their Tribe on Saturday. Units are encouraged to wear their Class-A uniform to chapel service on Sunday morning. Check-in Friday/Night Arrival Troops will check-in as a group, not individually. Please plan your arrival between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm Friday night. Vehicles will be parked at long term parking. In keeping in compliance with new camp procedures, your gear will be hauled to your assigned campsite by Camporee staff. We highly suggest that each unit, as well as all adults, and leaders pack their gear in backpacks as if they were going hiking. We also encourage you to weatherproof any and all gear as best as possible. The camporee staff is not responsible if gear or equipment gets wet because of rain. The event WILL go on rain, or shine. No early arrivals will be allowed. If you arrive early, you will not be allowed to enter camp and will have to wait until your entire Troop arrives. Opening Campfire We will be having an opening campfire at 9:00pm at the campfire circle. Important information, changes and updates will be announced so all participants and leaders need to attend. If it is raining we will have the opening in the dining hall.
7 Judges / Adult Leader / Patrol Leaders meeting There will be a Judges / Adult Leader / Patrol Leaders meeting on Friday night in the dining hall at 10pm. Every unit must have an adult representative and Tribe leaders present for this meeting. Troop Meals Please eat supper before arriving on Friday night. Each Troop will be responsible for providing their own Saturday breakfast and Sunday breakfast. We will provide a bag lunch on Saturday and ingredients for a judged Survivor-themed supper (bring plenty of extra snacks and beverage to supplement supper). Do not forget your mess kits, stoves and fuel, cooking gear, and utensils. Campsites You may wish to pre select a campsite for the weekend. We will try to honor your selection, on a first come, first served basis. Please indicate you first and second choice of sites on the registration form. Summer camp tents will not be available to use so if you are in a tent site you will need to bring your own tents. Remember, no one will be allowed to check-in or enter the campsite area until 6:00 pm on Friday. Saturday Opening Assembly All Tribes must be assembled at the main flag pole in front of the dining hall by 8:15 am Saturday morning. At this time your Tribe must have all needed equipment with them, and be ready to start the event trail. They will go to Station 1 at the parade field pavilion immediately after the assembly. Tribe Equipment List This list is the necessary equipment each Tribe will need to carry with them on the event trail. You will need each item. Most items are for the entire Tribe, some items each Scout needs to have, please make note of these. See attached list. Fire Building Kits Each Tribe is required to bring enough tinder, kindling and wood to start 2 small fires, one for cooking and one for a string burn, so don't forget this important item. Remember you will need this for TWO stations so don t use all of your wood at the first fire building station. You will also need enough extra tinder to create a flame for 5 stations. HINT: Remember to keep all wood and fire building materials DRY it is easier to start the fire and to keep them burning if everything is dry!!! To insure that your Tribes have enough time to get to all the stations, you need to be proficient with your fire building and starting skills. So please practice, practice, practice. Safety is our #1 concern, fire materials may not contain any type of accelerant: Liquid fuel, Magnesium, Petroleum, etc., and NO lighters!
