2 Troops, Crews, and Ships are invited to test their skills, everyone will gather Nov. 9-11, 2018 at Endview Plantation for the 2018 Expedition Endview Expect loads of fun! There will be activities, challenges, demonstrations and prizes galore based on nineteenth century outdoorsman skills. Brush up on those skills and make plans to meet at Endview for this unique event! Leaders, please use this guide to prepare for the Expedition. Here you ll receive general and specific information for a safe, fun event for your family or unit. The registration fee is $15.00 per individual. Each unit must have health forms of all its campers in camp at all times. If there are special health requirements for any Scout, Venturer, or adult leader, please notify the event chairman. Units are to supply their own meals and gear. During the day, there will be all types of fun activities geared around the time period of the 1850 s. On Saturday night, there will be the traditional campfire. Units and individuals will show off their various talents and entertain us all with skits, cheers, songs, and Scouting antics! Please sign up for your skit, cheer, and/or song by 5:00 p.m. with the campfire MC at the Staff area. 3 What is it? Unit based competitions that focus around skills an outdoorsman would have used in the 1850 s. The competitions will all be unit based, however most of them will be open to all youth within a unit. Only one competition individual or team from the unit will count towards completions. There will also be a series of demonstrations that are time period appropriate. When is it? November 9-11, 2018, the weather should be awesome. However, everyone should be ready to participate rain or shine. If severe weather is expected or hits during the event the event may be cancelled or postponed. Where is it? Endview Plantation in Newport News. This will be rugged camping. Campsites will be created in large field. There will be port-a-johns and potable water but that s about it. Who can attend? Scouting Units. What am I missing? The more time period appropriate your unit and scouts are the better! Bonus points!! Cost? The registration fee is $15.00 per individual. 4 All the activities for the Expedition are based on activities and skills an outdoorsman from the 1850 s would have used. The activities have been designed to test the units skills, knowledge, and to be great fun. Plus, the participants will be able to earn frontier dollars based on their ability to perform the various challenges. The more money a troop earns the higher they will be ranked. The events may be modified depending on weather. Competitions Unit Based Points Award System 1. Three Tier 1853 Communication Relay Race- See Communication Relay Sheet Steeple Chase Dispatch- Sprint/Run. More money for speed and accuracy of message Semaphore Message- See Semaphore sheet Morse Code Message- See Morse Code sheet 2. Defending the Village Tomahawk Throw- Everyone gets to throw. Troop will then select their top 3 throwers for points. 3. Frontier Cooking- See Frontier Cooking Sheet 4. Stalking Animal Track Identification- The more correct tracks the more money 5. Know your Woods Plant Identification- The more plants the more money. Bonus points for some lesser known plants 6. Cartography Laying it Out for Others- See Cartography sheet 7. Bonus Living the Life- Campsites will be visited to see how time period appropriate their campsites are. (Hints: Gateways are a good idea, visible electronics aren t. Propane lanterns are good, and charcoal or wood fired cooking are your best bet. Nylon tents are ok, don t want everyone running out to buy period appropriate tents, but nylon folding chairs should be put away for the visitation time period. Visitations will occur from mid-morning, not during lunch, till mid-afternoon) Demonstrations Cooking Reenactors Surveying Wood Working Frontier Games Blacksmithing Plantation House Tour must preregister At night, there will be a campfire full of songs, skits, jokes, tall tales and lots of fun. Units or individuals are encouraged to perform a song, skit, jokes, etc. at the evening campfire.

5 Communications Relay Race This race will be broken up into 3 different sections. The first is the steeple chase. This will be a sprint/run that will require a Scout to remember a message and relay it to another Scout. Only one Scout will be needed for this part of the race. Money will be given based on how quickly and accurately the message is delivered. The second part is semaphore based. The first thing the troop must do is to build a 3 foot square platform 3 feet off the ground. Troops will need to provide their own materials to build the platform. Then one Scout will need to stand on the platform and send a message via semaphore to another Scout, who will write it down. Money will be given based on how quickly and well built the platform is and on accurately and quickly the message is sent and received. The third section of this event will require 2 Scouts. One will send a message, via Morse Code to another Scout. Money will be awarded based on how quickly and accurately the message is delivered.

8 Frontier Cooking Troop will be able to send up to 4 Scouts to work on this activity. The Scouts will only be able to use period appropriate cooking utensils and food stuffs. All food and utensils must be provided by the troop. (No propane or charcoal. Only wood fires) The cooking area will open at 1:30 and judging will be at 4:15. Troops are not required to be in attendance the entire time but must be present at 4:15 to provide their meals to the judges. The Scouts are tasked with providing one frontier meal for 4 people. The can bring the following ingredients. Pork or slab bacon or beef (or mixture) Flour or bread, or corn meal (or mixture) peas or beans or rice (or mixture) Sugar Vinegar Salt Potatoes Onions Pickled onions Sauerkraut Molasses Dried apples The meals will be judge on tastiness and presentation. Don t forget its 1853!!

9 Cartography This event is all about producing a map that is a good representation of the selected area. Troops may send up to 3 Scouts to work as a team on this event. The more accurate their final sketch the more money they will earn. Cartography, the art and science of graphically representing a geographical area, usually on a flat surface such as a map or chart. This is not to be confused with a Survey Plat which shows property features with bearings and distance. Map Making Simple Planimetric Map. A planimetric map is drawn to scale with the objects in the correct positions, but shows no indication of height. Imagine it like flying over the area and taking a photo. If you look at the photo, you can see where everything is in relation to each other, but because it is 2D, you can't see how high up things are. STEP 1: Decide on a scale. Wide area maps usually use 1:50 (1 inch = 50 feet) or even bigger. Remember that you need to say what the scale is on your map so others can read it correctly. STEP 2: Decide on a key. Having a key makes it easier to put stuff on your map, without having to draw it out in miniature. Some usual symbols include blue lines for rivers, squares for buildings, triangles for hills and mountains, etc.

10 Cartography STEP 3: Pick a reference point. As everything is drawn to scale, you need to pick a reference point (usually the middle of the map, or a prominent feature). Imagine it like plotting a graph, you have to have an origin so that you know where the points are meant to go. STEP 4: Decide which objects you want on your map. For each object, you need to know it's distance from the reference point and it's simple compass bearing. STEP 5: Decide which direction on your map is North. Draw a little compass on the map to show which way it is.

11 Cartography STEP 6: Use your scale to convert the real-life distances into map distances. Say you have an object 100 feet away from your reference spot, and your scale is 1:50. 1 inch = 50 feet, so the object should be 2 inches away on the map. STEP 7: Start drawing the objects onto the map. Say you have an object 200 feet away from your reference spot at a bearing of 255 degrees, and your scale is 1:50. Using the scale, it should be 4 inches away from the reference point. As the bearing is 255 degrees, it should be at an angle of 255 degrees clockwise from the North direction (usually towards the top of the map). You may wish to draw a faint pencil line from the reference point towards North. Measure the angles from this line. The following page is the sketch sheet that the Scout will be provided with for the event.

14 General Regulations and Policies The following items are NOT allowed: Pets, Televisions, Radios, Video Games, Fireworks, Firearms, Illegal Drugs, Alcoholic Beverages, or Tobacco Products. 1. All camping will utilize Leave No Trace 2. techniques. 3. Fires must be kept to a cooking size and must be leave no trace. This means off the ground in a barrel or on cinderblocks. No sign of a fire can remain when you leave on Sunday. 4. Do not to roam through the campsites. 5. Cutting of live trees is not permitted. 6. Adults are responsible for their youth at all times. 7. All vehicles are to be parked in the designated parking areas. No vehicles in camp sites. Trailers are allowed. 8. Do not enter the camping area of the other groups without permission. 9. Defacing, destroying, or trashing of the property of others, the BSA or the Plantation is strictly forbidden. 10. All earthworks (redoubts) and the historical cemetery are off limits of all participants. 11. Everyone is expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will bring credit to their unit and the BSA. ADULTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO DISCUSS THESE REGULATIONS WITH THEIR YOUTH PRIOR TO ATTENDING THE EVENT!

15 Camping at Endview The city of Newport News has graciously allowed us to use Endview for these events and we want to make sure that we take good care of the property while we are there. Remember leave no trace principles and leaving the space better than when we found it. Here are a couple of Endview specific regulations: 1. We will be using port-a-johns so please plan accordingly. There will not be running water or flushing toilets. 2. There will be potable water available. Be sure to bring water containers to fill and bring back to you campsite. Please do not waste any water and be as water conscious as possible. 3. We will be camping in the battle fields behind the plantation. There are historic earthworks that we will need to stay off of. Please keep the Scouts to the designated camping areas only. 4. Camping will be primitive. You will have a site location and that s it. There are no picnic tables, fire rings, grills or any other amenities. 5. Vehicles will be able to park close to the campsite area, and one vehicle per site will be allowed back. If your troop brings as trailer you will be able to leave it in your site. 6. The sites are marked out in the middle of a large field. Please make sure you and your Scouts stay within your campsites boundaries. 7. Campfires are allowed, but should follow leave no trace principles. A burn barrel, lifted off the ground. Ground fires are not allowed. Check-In/Registration Arrival time is 5:30 pm on Friday, of the event, to set up campsites. If you plan to arrive before 5:30pm you MUST contact Crew595advisor@gmail.com to make arrangements (or you may end up waiting until our staff is ready to receive you). Upon entering Endview units will proceed to registration. Campsite areas will be assigned at that time. All Vehicles must be in the parking area by 9:00 Friday night Campsite Assignments Campsites will be assigned based on information given during the pre-registration process and the size of available areas for tents. Site assignments will be given at check-in.

16 Parking There will be no vehicles allowed in the campsite areas or activity field. Trailers will be allowed to park in or near each site if you are camping as a unit. Units without trailers will be allowed one vehicle at a time to the camp site to unload. UNIT TRAILERS ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Handicapped Parking Requests for special parking passes for medical conditions will be made on a caseby-case basis. Special passes must be requested in advance and will be issued on the day of the event. We prefer to discuss the request 2 weeks prior to allow for the greatest degree of accommodation. Every reasonable effort will be made to accommodate those with physical disabilities or special needs. First Aid Everyone is expected to have a first aid kit for minor injuries. Emergency medical care will be available for severe injuries in the admin area. Visitors Visitors are welcome and encouraged to attend the daytime activities and ceremonies. However, they must leave the campsite area at the completion of the ceremonies.
