2 Tom & Linda Mitchell Page 2 A NOTE FROM THE TEAM CHEERLEADER By Tom & Linda Mitchell FL1-G Chapter Directors elcome to 2017!!! Taken from the words of our President-elect, 2017 will be time to Make FL1-G Great Again!! Your Chapter Team has some exciting new rides and outings on the calendar. As you browse the calendar, remember first that if you would like to have a special ride or activity, and its not our calendar, PLEASE contact a Team member so we can check it out. Also, remember that our calendar is dynamic. This means that it is updated daily. Before any ride, it is your responsibility to check to make sure it hasn t been postponed, rescheduled or cancelled. We try to get an out accordingly, but sometimes we don t make it, for which I ll apologize in advance. Some your Chapter Team spent the first weekend in January at the Florida District Conference (aka, Chapter Conference) in Orlando. While we were brought up to speed on some new features and programs from Phoenix, our District Directors, Bill & Gina Berry shared an exciting update for Florida. WE HAVE A NEW VENUE FOR THE FLORIDA DISTRICT RALLY IN MARCH 2017!!!! On page 8-9 of this newsletter, you will find the updated brochure, including the registration. The Hilton Orlando/ Altamonte Springs Hotel will be the host for our Rally! The Hilton hosted the Florida Motion Picture & Television Association s Crystal Reel Awards in 2010 & A few other GWRRA members were members of the FMPTA during those years, and they will attest to the excellent service we were provided. With that said, we are very enthusiastic about the Rally and have started gathering ideas for a skit, banner and Order of the Red Spoon ride. We look forward to hearing from you and having you join us on our many adventures in Mark the date on your calendar for the FL1-G Motorcycle Safety Safari, on April 15, 2017 (in lieu of our Gathering.) 3 Ron & Cindy Brace Page 3 A VIEW FROM THE REAR OF THE PACK By Ron & Cindy Brace Assistant Chapter Director Editor s note: This month s article is a re-gifted one from Sept. 09. We wish him well as he regains his strength. ast month's newsletter article, we told you that Cindy and myself would be amongst the missing since we were off on another riding adventure. For us, it was time again to see another part of this great nation that we hadn't yet experienced, out through portions of South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. No way, in a newsletter article, could we even cover all the sights from Chamberlain, SD, where we crossed the Missouri River, over to Spearfish, SD, where we spent a couple days doing dayrides in the Black Hills and around Mount Rushmore, and on over to Cody, WY, for another three days in the Big Horns. Naturally, we've all heard about different encounters with the various forms of wildlife while riding this area - herds of bison/ buffalo, a bear or two, maybe a moose or elk. Ours was a little different. Just prior to starting our day ride through the Badlands, we pulled into a roadside stop (food, fuel, tee shirts, souvenirs, restrooms, etc.) out in what appeared to be the middle of nowhere. As we were getting ready to leave, a fairly large group of bicyclists started arriving. Approximately 30 riders, men and women of various ages, physically fit, all dressed according to the bicyclists' ATGATT-code (lycra shorts Membership Anniversary Philip Stagg (1/94)* and shirts, helmets, shoes, etc.), proudly displaying their country of origin - Taiwan. It seems they were in the midst of doing a cross-country ride while here in the U. S.. While we were trying to grasp the idea of this group undertaking such a challenge, much to our amazement was the excitement they displayed over our trikes. After many hand signs and limited English verbal exchanges, it became clear that they really wanted pictures of themselves sitting on the trikes, wearing our motorcycle helmets. A time of friendly mass confusion then followed with the usual exchange of cameras and picture taking. Then it was time to wish them well on their journey and for us to continue ours. This was an amazing trip. The riding was fantastic as well as exciting. This was also a time to practice what we preach about being prepared for your ride. One of our day-rides left Cody, WY, where the morning starting time was clear with temperatures in the lower-60's. Traveling 46 miles over the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, going over Dead Indian Pass and through Shoshone National Forest, we arrived in Cooke City, MT, where started raining. After lunch, we then headed out on U.S. Highway 212, also known as Bear Tooth Highway, for the 97-mile run to Red Lodge, MT. By midday when we reached Bear Tooth Pass, elevation 10,947 feet, it was a combination of rain and sleet, the air temperature had dropped to 42 degrees, and there was still pockets of snow on either side of the roadway. By the afternoon when we had descended back down to Red Lodge, it was sunny and the temperature was in the upper-70's. Needless to say, I learned quite a bit on this trip about dressing in layers. on & Cindy Brace Assistant Chapter Directors NOTE: Names that have an asterisk (*) next to their join date either have expired or will expire very soon. 4 Ronald Girardin Page 4 Ride SAFELY!! By Ron Girardin FL1-G Chapter Educator Editor s Note: This article is a re-gifted article submitted by Linda Hopskinson from nce again, it s time for a little reflection on how much fun it is to ride a motorcycle, trike or sports vehicle but doing it safely. I am a fairly new rider and not quite comfortable riding in certain situations, as I haven t had the experience of some of our lifelong riders. Those are the gals and guys who have been riding for years, not just months. We all know that motorcycles are fun and they can get us to anyplace a car can get us but they are way more dangerous than a car. In fact, motorcyclists are 30 times more likely to die in a crash than people in a car and nearly half of all motorcycle deaths are the result of a singlevehicle crash. Being a member of GWRRA and having attended many GWRRA functions, I can tell you that it is no surprise that many of our riders are older. Our children are grown and have left the nest and we re looking for some of that fun and freedom that we experienced as young people. Motorcycles give that to us. They also give us a greater chance of ending up in a hospital due to slower reflexes, weaker eyesight, more brittle bones and other disadvantages of being 60 years old and older. We are three times more likely to be hospitalized after a crash than the younger riders. There are keys to optimizing our odds and being prepared. This article will explore just a few of them and hopefully in the coming months we can explore a few more. My thoughts begin with Don t buy more bike than you can handle. The performance of today s bikes is notably faster and more powerful than bikes when we were younger. I address this thought because some of us have recently bought new bikes and some of us are shopping around. My second thought is Does the bike fit you. In other words, can your feet touch the ground comfortably without being on tiptoe. This was a primary consideration for me and really the reason I selected a Can Am although I tell everyone it was for the cute, little suitcase that came with it. I feel comfortable on the bike I bought. Brakes should definitely be a consideration. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) states that bikes with antilock brakes are 37% less likely to be involved in a fatal crash than motorcycles with them. They say that no matter what kind of rider you are, ABS can brake better than you. Hone Your Skills. Now that I have a bike, I will be going to PLP and embarrassing myself to death, but I will go. My life and the life of my co-rider may depend on it someday. I haven t been riding long enough to even really know the basics and forget the advanced techniques, such as how to perform an evasive emergency maneuvers. The page is running out so we will address the issue of head gear, etc. another time but I would like to say that whenever I see someone riding without a helmet, it makes me sad. My sister was wearing a helmet when a drunk hit her head-on and the SUV landed on top of her. She suffers from some brain damage but she is able to work and most importantly, she LIVED. So folks, Please, you never know what is coming down the road.wear Your Helmets, wear the right gear and ride defensively. The stats in this article were provided by ConsumerReports.org. onald Girardin FL1-G Chapter Educator THE LIGHTER SIDE OF THE WEATHER Harry and Martha listened to the morning weather report, which said that snow was expected and that everyone should park on the odd-numbered side of the street. Harry went out and moved their car accordingly. The next day, the message was repeated on the weather report, except this time everyone was supposed to park on the even-numbered side of the street. Again, Harry immediately moved the car. On the third day, the power shut off in the middle of weather report, and Harry didn't know on which side to park the car. Martha said, "Just leave the car in the garage."

5 Mary Lou Manning Page 5 FROM THE FUN MAKERS By Mary Lou Manning Membership Enhancement Coordinator any of you might be wondering what is a Membership Enhancement Coordinator. Quite honestly, I had the same question when Tom & Linda approached me (over dinner) to take on the role. They informed me of some of the responsibilities required. I had to be able to talk to people, and make phone calls to members and potential members. My role was to make the members experience within GWRRA enjoyable. I had to want to HAVE FUN! They gave me a short while to consider it, then after dessert they prodded me for an answer. Okay, I m just kidding they gave me a couple of days. I enjoy talking to people, so that part of recruiting didn t look to be difficult. Helping people enjoy themselves when we get together is something that comes naturally, too. I had already been the Sunshine Lady, so having FUN was the easy part. When we spoke a few days later, I accepted, and here I am. I m still learning about the benefits and opportunities of membership in the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. I vow to fill you in on all the good stuff I find out about. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions. If I don t readily have the answer, I have a bunch of folks I can get the accurate answer from. ary Lou Manning Membership Enhancement Coordinator

6 Page 6 ADVENTURES WITH FLIGGY The travels of Fliggy has been a long time on the road on the motorcycle and many events. It all started at the GWRRA meeting Nov 20 th and it became part of me for the next 30 days of travel. I went with fl1g to Leesburg for the motorcycle event called: Crusin for St Jude at Gator s Harley Davidson and there were 250 on the poker run with an auction at the end and pulled pork sandwich, beans and slaw. Sunday Nov 21 st I was at Osteen for the motorcycle event for Donna Lynn who has cancer. There were 105 bikers that attended with an auction and prizes at the end of the run Nov 24 th was Thanks giving and there must have been 10 of us around my neighbor s table with lots of turkey and trimmings. Nov 25 th Friday. Carol, Alice and I went all day to Epcot and Disney and my feet and legs were not the same when I got home at midnight. But we all had a great time from one ride to another. The fireworks were great at 10pm at Disney, so then we went back to Epcot to get the car in the lot. I got a pass for the day and also multi park and fast pass and of course we had to eat! I was glad to get home and sleep since a neighbor had to be at the house at 11am to pick up a piano that the lady wanted to get rid of, so the 3 of us lifted the piano into the truck since Randy s wife Claudia wanted to learn to play and wanted a real piano and not a keyboard! I am sure the piano weighed 500 lbs. Nov 26 th I was brought into the Seminole county jail for women. The Officer in charged had to call his supervisor to be able to let me in hanging on Judi s belt loop only and not be to be removed and there were 35 girls that came out for the church service. The Roku did not work so we listened to the previous sermon on the DVD. I don t like electronics as it has its limitations. I did call for a help so maybe next week the machine will work direct sermon from the church to the jail called main stream. Sunday night Nov 27 th went to Northland church to help pass out the church bulletins and left at 5pm to visit Ron and Cindy Brace in Deltona. It was good to see them but Ron is not doing so good as he keeps getting treatments and does the best he can and glad he got to see me (fl1g)! We had spaghetti and I left to take care of a home and 2 cats inside the house and 5 cats outside as the lady went to Pennsylvania for 7 days. Monday Nov 28 th I am helping Judi at work sorting mail and helping to get cargo from Fed Express, UPS and contacting the people to come and get their packages that they ordered. The rest of the one month I had Fliggy, I went to work every day and we sorted mail and metered mail, collected packages from DHL, Fed Express, UPS, and other carriers with deliveries. Then I called the people to where it should go and helped with shipping and receiving packages going out to their places.
