1 FL-2D HARBOR CITY WINGS MELBOURNE, FLORIDA August 2010 GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION Chapter Director Comments: I d like to start my article with a thank you to Ric and Madelena Buck and Dana Voight for putting on an informative Officer Certification Program (OCP) training course. As officers, we were required to attend one before the end of August. I was a little apprehensive of having to go but in the end I m glad we did. The training is meant to put the whole GWRRA organization on the same playing level. I would encourage any member to attend. With Wing Ding and OCP, the month was a little short for getting more rides and kick tires in. Next month looks a little better for the chapter to ride more. Rusty s at the port was a great lunch ride. We joked with the waitress that we planned on staying for dinner. They do have a nice view of the boats coming in and out of the port. Jason s is always a popular kick tire gathering place. We took over. Chapter members kept showing up. That s the way I like to meet. I had so much fun going from table to table (we had half the tables lined up and still had to use tables separately for the late comers). It felt like a big family reunion. Ride Long & Safe harlotte ercer Chapter Director There is a story about a new clerk in a supermarket. A customer asked him if she could buy half a grapefruit. Not knowing what to do, he excused himself to ask the manager. "Some nut out there wants to buy half a grapefruit..." he began, and, suddenly realizing that the customer had entered the office behind him, continued, "... and this lovely lady would like to buy the other half." The manager was impressed with the way the clerk amicably resolved the problem and they later started chatting. "Where are you from?" asked the store manager. "Lancaster, Pennsylvania," replied the clerk, "home of ugly women and great hockey teams." "Oh, my *WIFE* is from Lancaster," challenged the manager. Without skipping a beat, the clerk asked, "What team was she on?" 2

He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, "Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again." The gentleman replied, "Oh, I haven't told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!" 3

4 Safety Educator AND NOW A WORD FROM CAPTAIN SAFETY T-CLOCK T-CLOCK T-CLOCK HI EVERYONE. LETS TALK ABOUT THE IM- PORTANCE OF CHECKLISTS. PAT AND I FLEW TO MICHIGAN LAST MONTH, OUR FLIGHT WAS DELAYED FOR AWHILE AND I WATCHED THE PILOT (WE WERE SITTING UP CLOSE TO THE COCKPIT) AS HE WAS GOING THROUGH A CHECKLIST OF SOME KIND. HE WAS TALKING TO THE GATE PERSONNEL, MAINTENANCE PEOPLE, AND HIS CO-PILOT. I WAS WONDER- ING WHAT WAS GOING ON. WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE PLANE OR WHAT! WELL AS IT TURNED OUT THE MAINTENANCE PER- SON DID NOT SIGN OFF ON THE REPAIR WORK THAT WAS DONE, SO THE PILOT S CHECK LIST WAS NOT COMPLETE AND HE WAS NOT LEAV- ING UNTIL IT WAS. ALL WENT WELL AND WE ARRIVED ONLY 40 MINUTES LATE. CHECK LISTS ARE IMPORTANT AND NOT DOING THEM PROPERLY OR COMPLETELY COULD GET YOU INTO A LOT OF TROUBLE. EVEN BUILDING A RACECAR EVERY NUT AND BOLT HAS TO BE CHECKED BEFORE IT CAN GO ONTO THE TRACK; A DRIVER COULD BE AT RISK NOT TO MENTION A LOT OF OTHERS DRIVERS AND SPECTATORS. SO MANY JOBS HAVE CHECK LISTS AND IF NOT DONE PROPERLY THE RAMIFICATIONS COULD BE A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN. WE SEE IT ALL THE TIME IN TRAFFIC SITUA- TIONS, CAR RECALLS, AND THE SPACE COAST WITH THE SHUTTLES. IN THE SAME WAY, THE MILITARY HAS TO DOT EVERY I AND CROSS EVERY T OR A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE AT RISK. EVEN AS MOTORCYCLISTS, WE HAVE A RE- SPONSIBILITY TO OURSELVES AND OTHERS TO NOT ONLY RIDE RESPONSIBLY BUT TO CHECK OUR BIKES TO MAKE SURE EVERY- THING IS MECHANICALLY SOUND TO THE BEST OF OUR ABILITY. I M SURE OUR CO- RIDERS WOULD AGREE. SO WE NEED TO USE THE TOOLS WE HAVE, NOT JUST THE ONES IN THE TOOL BOX, BUT THE FORM CALLED THE T- CLOCK CHECK LIST THAT RIDE EDUCATORS PASS OUT AT MEETINGS. IT CAN ALSO BE DOWNLOADED FROM THE NATIONAL, RE- GION, AND DISTRICT WEB SITES. SO LETS ALL DO A T-CLOCK AND CHECK THE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE IN THE OWN- ERS MANUAL. WE SHOULD CHECK OUR- SELVES OUT TO. TAKE OUR MEDICA- TIONS, GET OUR CHECKUPS, AND WE WILL ALL BE A LOT BETTER OFF BECAUSE OF IY. LETS BE SAFE OUT THERE. THANK YOU. MIKE AND PAT DUQUETTE SR. RIDE EDU- CATORS RAY AND DIANE MERCIER ASST. The county fire department rushed to the scene, but the fire was more than they could handle. Someone suggested calling the volunteer fire department. Despite some doubt that they would be of any assistance, they were called. The volunteers arrived in a dilapidated old fire truck. They rumbled straight towards the fire, drove right into the middle of the flames and stopped! The firefighters jumped from the truck and frantically started spraying water in all directions. Soon they had snuffed out the centre of the fire and leaving two parts which were easily put out. As the farmer watched all this, he was impressed and grateful that his house and farm had been spared. He quickly got his chequebook and donated $1000 to the volunteer fire department. A local news reporter asked the volunteer fire captain how they planned to use the funds. The captain replied, "The first thing we're gonna do is get the brakes on our fire truck fixed!" They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq. Why don t we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it has worked for over 200 years, and we re not using it anymore. 5

12 Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that during the mad cow epidemic our government could track a single cow, born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she slept in the state of Washington? And, they tracked her calves to their stalls. But, they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow. The 10 Commandments The real reason that we can t have the ten Commandments posted in a government building is this You cannot post; Thou Shalt Not Steal Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery And Thou Shall Not Lie In a building full of politicians.
