2 From the Director s Chair Ed & Jeanette Carr, FL1-K Chapter Directors As Willie Nelson sings On The Road Again Since we are having a Wild Wild West Costume Contest at our Monthly Gathering on 14 August 2017 to Celebrate Christmas in August, I took my, 18-year-old, Gus cowboy hat to have it reshaped. I just wish I knew the shape it will be in when I get it back. Might be we all will see at the same time. Things are getting exciting around here since we have the neat costume contest coming up and we are also getting ready to head out west again. First we will be visiting my brother s widow in Denver for a day or two, also visiting my brother s grave site at Ft Logan National Cemetery, Denver. He s not there but I want to see it anyway. Then on to Salida, CO to attend the Colorado District Rally, where we have been asked to judge the Couple of the Year and Individual of the Year Selection Process. On Sunday following the Colorado Rally we will be heading to the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center, Grapevine TX, for the International Couple of the Year Competition on Tuesday. Good Luck to Alabama s Frank & Linda Teasley, the Region A Couple of the Year & next International Couple of the Year. We will bed down there for the next five days of fun and meeting new friends and getting reacquainted with old friends during the world s largest Family Reunion. Around here, we have been having a lot of fun with rides and events in the area. 15 July saw Fred & Annette Bismarck, Nolan Polley, Joe Pomerleau & Gloria Harrington, Rock-N-Bob & Loraine Ingenito, Don & Judi Black and Jeanette & I riding to J.B. Boondockers Grill in Howie-in-the-Hills, on 18 July was our every other Tuesday Ride otherwise known as the Footloose Ride. Included on that ride was Marc & Renee Oakley form FL1- X Orange Park, Don Black, Eugene Heaney, Bill Mann, Nolan Polley, Rock-N-Bob, Joe Pomerleau and Jeanette & me. We ended up in Eaton s Beach Sandbar Grill, Weirsdale. On 22 July we had a Chapter Directors Prerogative Ride to 3 Bananas where we met up with and had a lot of fun with 15 Members of Chapter FL1-X Orange Park. On our side of the table were Dan & Barb Randall, Joe Pomerleau & Gloria Harrington, Bob & Sharon McNickle, Gordon & Betty Currie and Jeanette & Me. Next was the Waffle Cone Ice Cream, Flagler Beach, where slurp n down the good stuff were Gary & Ruth Sober, Gordon & Betty Currie, Fred & Annette Bismarck, Rock-N-Bob & Rainie and Jeanette & Me. Rounding out July was the Lotto Dinner at Caribbean Jacks, Daytona Beach where we always have loads of fun were Gene & Eileen Heaney, Gordon & Betty Currie, Lotto Master himself Dan & Barb Randall, Fred & Annette Bismarck, Rock-N-Bob & Rainey Ingenito, Bill & Kathy Mann, Bill Washburn & and friend Lorrie and Jeanette & Me. We hope to see you at a GWRRA event in 2017, Ed & Jeanette, Directors CALLING ALL FL1-K MEMBERS!!! 3 Dan s Doodles.. What about the old saying! Time flies when your having fun. I don't want to stop the fun but slow it down so we can have more. August already and some stores will start putting out Christmas stuff. We are getting the jump on all of them with our Cowboy Christmas, and our load up the food wagon and help feed people that need our help, for the Flagler food bank. We hope everyone will dress western for the August 14th fun night. To add a little fun, we will judge the guys on Old West Cowboy and Rhinestone Cowboy? For the ladies we will use Cattle Queen and Queen of the Dance hall. Part two of our night was to add food to the chuck wagon and food bank. I threw out a big number as a goal? Ed and Jeanette CARR our CD s came on with a 100lb donation and made me match it, ha ha. So we have a base of 200lbs as a start, and its Christmas in August, right? WOW as we were walking out the door a tall cowboy and his Lady said they wanted to add 200lbs to the wagon, DOUBLE WOW, that 400lbs looks good. "2018" our CD has the team hard at work planning our April Rally as there is lots to cover. As Game prizes are a big part of what we provide for our friends who come and support us its never to early to start asking you for HELP! Good news Bob and Rainey added six to the five on hand so eleven down and 90 to go. Thanks for all your help as we get moving. 4 Notes From the Rider Education Corner Summer in Florida and it s many Seasons Summer is in full swing in Florida and there s probably a lot of riding in your future. A few precautions may help keep you out of danger. The sun and heat create more hazards than just those on the road. While on the road we have many summer time conditions to contend with: orange barrels, uneven pavement, differences in surface heights, repaving, and road debris. Don't panic, watch your speed, keep a firm grip on the handlebars, while maintaining control of your motorcycle and you should ride right through it. Changing weather - rain, hail and intense winds means a change in riding control. The most common type of weather condition that you might have to face when riding your motorcycle in Florida is rain. You have much less traction when you are riding on roadways that are covered with water. First, you have a limited number of tires in contact with the road. Second, the vehicle you are riding weighs much less than the average car or truck, so there is less pressure on the tires making contact with the road. If you want to remain safe while riding your motorcycle in the rain, there are a few things that you should do: First, you should reduce your speed. This will give you more traction since your tires will be able to make more contact with the road. Next, you should try and avoid standing water on roadways as much as possible. Standing water can cause hydroplaning which can result in the loss of control. Hydroplaning occurs when you combine too much speed with a flat water covered surface. Your tires essentially slide across the roadway and you can lose all traction. Reducing your speed is an effective way to eliminate the risk of hydroplaning. Wind is another adverse riding condition that you will often face in Florida. High winds can occur without warning. If you want to successfully steer your way through high winds, one thing you can do is lean as well as steer slightly towards the direction from which the winds are coming. This will help counter balance your motorcycle with the force of the blowing winds. It is also a good idea to reduce your speed as well during high wind riding situations. Hail One thing you don t want to do is ride when it is hailing. Hail of any size is not going to feel good when it hits you. In addition, hail can create slippery road conditions which can cause you to lose control of your motorcycle and possibly crash We could see all of these conditions during Tropical Storm Emily which is approaching as I write this article, Ed & Jeanette Carr, Chapter Directors August 2017 Page 4

5 Flagler County Resource Center Food Bank Update Ruth Sober, Sunshine Lady, and Gary Sober, Webmaster You gave 128lbs of food at our July meeting. Bravo! And the Cowboy Christmas in August will surely top Dan and Barb Randall's challenge in poundage. The coming months will be a challenge for our seniors and children...those who are food insecure. You, Chapter K Members, are now making, and can in the future make a BIG difference in their lives. Last year, in a 10-month period, Flagler County Resource Center's Food Bank had served 5,854 people who faced "food insecurity". We have not received statistics for entire 2016, nor any for 2017, but judging from the line of people we see waiting Tuesday mornings, the need is as great presently, or even greater. 6 Thank you! Thank you! Gary & Ruth Sober Couple of the Year The July regular meeting was a BLAST with visitation from other chapters, a dozen or more door prizes, and two 50/50 of $40.00 each. Jeanette had all of us stand up and introduce our selves using a descriptive word starting with the 1st letter of our name. The goodie store had a good night selling tee shirts. Fun and games and new people signing up to join. We are a chapter on the move. Visitation to FL1-H was a lot of fun. Jeanette won one of the 50/50 while Ruth & Ed won a door prizes. You missed a good time at our sister chapter. Saturday the 20th there was a rendezvous at the Three Banana Restaurant in Crescent City with FL1-X from Orange Park and Fl1-K. A great turn out with 15 from X and K had seven. The food was great and the camaraderie was outstanding. See what you missed again! Look at the pictures on the web site. FUN,FUN, FUN, AND MORE FUN. The ice cream gathering at the Waffle Cone Ice Cream Shop in Flagler Beach was attended by ten of us and we all had a good time. The weather was hot, the ice cream melting, but the licking was fast and furious Still, looking for the no shows. The lotto diner at Caribbean Jacks was fun by all fourteen of us. Rain, drinks and FUN. Jeanette's name was pulled out of the poke and drew the wrong color chip to win. The pot is over $ bucks now and I bet you'll come next time. 7 Membership Enhancement Musings Jeanette Carr, Membership Enhancement SUMMER: HOT & RAINY This is summer in Florida, but we still enjoy rides and having fun. By starting in the morning and getting home early afternoon we have avoided getting wet. Hot, yes we have been that, but a quick shower, change of clothes, and time in A/C is the cure. Well we mustn t forget that drinking LOTS of WATER before/during/ after rides is the secret to managing the heat. I did use a cool vest on our return trip from the north. It managed to keep me comfortable in 100 degree heat but then it also kept my pants soaked. Guess I ll have to learn how much water to squeeze out! Our next long trip to Colorado, Texas Wing Ding, & Louisiana friends will give me time to experiment. We have enjoyed many rides this month, 3 even in one week! Check out all the pictures on the Chapter web site photo album page. Gary Sober, our web master, does a quick and excellent job posting all photos given to him. At the gathering, ice cream kick tire, and dinners we traveled by car since these were in the evenings and rain was always a threat. No matter how we go, time with friends is the important part. At the last gathering, I forgot to introduce new members Chuck & Debbie Bowers. They are long time GWRRA members, just new to our group. Debbie wrote an excellent article for this newsletter introducing themselves. Check it out. I apologize for not listing the member # and member anniversaries for July. Chuck & Debbie Bowers Chuck and Debbie Bowers have been active GWRRA members since They have lived in Palm Coast since 1996 when they moved from Southern New Jersey, outside of Philadelphia. They love living in Flagler County and feel the move here has added years to their lives! Plus they get to ride year round! They have been married 28 years and have one daughter and one granddaughter. They have several businesses that they operate in their home, a tax & retirement planning business, income tax preparation, notary services, and Debbie is also a Florida realtor. As a notary, Debbie has officiated over 100 weddings. They are also very involved with their church and Chuck leads a prison ministry at Tomoka Correctional and Debbie participates in a Women's Jail Ministry at Volusia County Jail. When they are not busy with work and ministry, they love to travel and cruise around the USA and this year, they did their first transatlantic cruise to Europe. They really enjoy spending time in the Caribbean Islands. In 2008 they were Couple of the Year with Chapter FL1-H. Chuck has rode his Gold Wing through all contiguous 48 states and they have attended 9 national GWRRA rallies. They say the best part of being in GWRRA is all the friendships they have made and all the fun they have. Barry & Faye Watson Hi, we left home on the 21st of July and stopped at the Ontario GWRRA Rally, same as your Florida rally. Then on to a. Bike rodeo for 2 days. We have now travelled 3200 km so far and we are 1/2 way across the country.
