3 June, 01...GWRRA FL1-Wings. Page CHAPTER DIRECTORS Ted & Carolyn Russell GWRRA # cd.fl1w@gmail.com Chapter Directors Message As a former teacher, the end of the school year signals the beginning of summer. As I sit here at my desk with the sun filtering through the blinds, I hear a lawn mower running and the laughter of children. I think about all our friends that have migrated to the north for the summer and I look at the FL1-Wing calendar for the month. Typically we slow down on rides in the hot summer months but it seems that we still did a lot of get-togethers in May. FL1-Wingers went to see the St. Augustine Lighthouse. We had two Tire Kicks to Panera's and the Tilted Kilt. We patronized the Mokanna Lodge Corn Boil and we tried out a new idea of Brunch Kicks: One to the Cracker Barrel in Leesburg and the other to the Osteen Diner in Osteen. Of course we had our Monthly Chapter Gathering at Perkins too. It's always good to see friends and talk motorcycles. At May's Monthly Chapter Gathering we want to congratulate Diane Andberg for winning over $50 in the Quarter Bucket drawing. Also congrats go to Gary Miller who won Chapter Pride. Cliff Hotchkiss and Gary Miller took home the 50/50 drawing for the night. Lucky winners for the evening! In June we have two Tire Kicks: One to Chili's in West Apopka on the June 6 and another to Habaneros Mexican Grill on June 0, both at 6:30 p.m. and we meet at the restaurant. Our Monthly Chapter Gathering on the second Saturday is FL1-W's Bonus Visitation Month. You should anticipate lots of other chapters visiting us for the evening. The evening starts at 4:30 at the Perkins in Apopka. We also have the new Brunch Kicks at 10:00 a.m. for those that have the day free. One is on June 1 at the Mason Jar and the other is on June 9 at Lisa's Kountry Café in Sorrento. Call a friend and we will meet you there. FL1-Wingers will also visit with FL1-G Deltona Chapter for their Monthly Chapter Gathering at 9:00 a.m. on June 16 at the Patio Grill in Sanford. So there still is lots of opportunity to get together with other's to visit and talk motorcycle adventures. July and August will be the hottest months but your Winger Staff is already hard at work planning for these months. For the Long Distance Rider we will be riding north to the Great Smoky Mountains in September. This will be six days of bliss astride a bike. No ride is over 30 miles in length per day and most routes are back roads. *September 10 ride to Dublin, Georgia. *September 11 ride to Fontana Resort, North Carolina. *September 1 ride the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway. *September 13 ride the Blue Ridge Parkway to Hendersonville, North Carolina. *September 14 ride to Statesboro, Georgia. *September 15 arrive home. If you think you might be interested and want more information, call Gary Hoop, FL1-W Ride Coordinator at to let him know. Also, the itinerary is on Page 8 of this month s newsletter. Reservations are already filling up. This will be a wonderful long distance trip making lots of memories to chew on afterward! Come along for the adventure. The summer is here and the afternoon storms will be flaring up. Caution riding in these coming days is critical. Remember to hydrate and keep an eye to the sky. Maybe ride in early morning or early evening times. Remember your chapter is thinking of you, and you are thinking about your chapter. GWRRA FL1- Wings are a special group of people. Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge! FL1-Wingers Rock! Carolyn & Ted Russell Chapter Directors

5 June, GWWRA FL1-Wings...Page 5 RIDE EDUCATORS Ken & Mary Ann Long GWRRA # longkma@gmail.com -UP: In the Back Seat BE MORE THAN JUST A PASSENGER; BE A CO-RIDER! Remember, you should carry contact emergency information, along with medications and allergies, readily accessible. Is your First Aid kit in your trunk? If it s in a saddle bag, you might not be able to get to it. Also, always carry your cell phone on your person, in a jacket pocket or on your belt in the event you get separated from your bike in an emergency situation, you can still call for help. In the past, we were passengers. Now we are more commonly called C0-RIDERS. We do sit in back and enjoy the ride, but, we should also be assisting our RIDER (Driver). We need to act as another set of eyes and ears on the road. The word PASSENGER may refer to one who is passively along for the trip. The term CO-RIDER means what it implies: It is someone who shares responsibility for the safety of those on the bike and others on the road. How can a CO-RIDER get involved? Help the RIDER get ready for the trip. Perform the T-CLOCKS together so you know what your RIDER does prior to KSU. A CO-RIDER can check tire pressure and the lights before they get on. Is the gear all ready, and are the helmet face shields clean? Is the rain gear in the Bike? Is the FIRST AID KIT readily available and properly supplied? Know the exact location for equipment and emergency supplies. There may be a time when you need to move quickly to retrieve an item from the bike. Our GWRRA rallies have CO-RIDER seminars that are really informative and a great place to share ideas with other CO-RIDERS. You may never intend to be a RIDER yourself, but you may want to think about taking a motorcycle riding class so you know what the RIDER is doing up there. If needed, do you know how to stop the engine? Do you know where the kill switch is? COMMUNICATION IS KEY: Talk about your trip in advance so you can be watching for signs and roadways. As you travel, look to the sides of the road to spot hazards and let the RIDER know what you see. Train yourself to sit still and watch your surroundings. You may need to sit slightly to the left or right of the RIDER so you are not just looking at the back of the RIDER S helmet. If you want to reposition yourself to get more comfortable, let the RIDER know first! Your sudden movement could cause an imbalance of the bike that the RIDER was not ready for. Lean with the RIDER in the corners and curves. Talk about how this should be done. The CO-RIDER needs to know what is necessary to keep the bike balanced. You need to learn to ride together. As Gold Wing owners, we have a built in intercom system. But if that should fail, develop a system to communicate by hand signals and/or shoulder taps. The CO-RIDER can be a helpful contributor to the experience on a short ride or a long trip! UP IS COZY! IT IS FUN! HELP KEEP IT SAFE C0-RIDERS! Article this month by Mary Ann Long

6 Page 6...GWRRA FL1-Wings...June, 01 FL DISTRICT DIRECTORS Bill and Gina Berry We are now halfway through the year and what a ride it has been. Summer will arrive this month and with it many of you heading out for vacations. We hope to see folks out and about riding and having FUN. We have already seen one couple starting a two month odyssey taking them to Alaska and back. FUN and safe travels to Mike and Charlotte from Melbourne! Wish we could go with you! We did attend several events last month, including FL1-J (Jacksonville) and FL1-A (Tallahassee). We had a great time and Gina won some good stuff. I was able to be at FL1-Y (Gainesville) on May 19 where I won some tools! The one common thing among all of these - people were having FUN. We met new people attending a Chapter event for the first time and even one Chapter that it was their first event ever! Remember, CD's, if your Chapter plans an event during the year, the best way to have people show up is to be at their event. You must get out, support other folks events, and promote...or people will not know what you are planning nor will they come to your event! June brings the Georgia District Convention the in Dillard, Georgia - the Northeast corner of the state. For those who love the curvy roads and hills this is the place. For the few who love to eat this is the place! Tommy and Vicky Martin are putting on their first Rally as District Directors and I'm sure they plan on having a FUN event with their "Rumble in the Jungle" theme. July will be here before we know it and so will Wing Ding. Once again Region A has ticket and Poker Run Sales with Florida needing some help on Thursday and Friday. Please let Gina know if you can help either day and at what time you are available (minimum of hours to get the cool worker badge and ticket to participate in the Ice Cream Social). It is always FUN to work this area because you meet so many people from all around the world. They leave the tables knowing why Region A and especially Florida is the best in all of GWRRA! In closing, remember all the FUN comes with the need to be prepared for bad weather, hot conditions, and, of course, the folks who never look twice. Be safe, be aware and let's go have some FUN! 7 June, GWRRA FL1-Wings....Page MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT COORDINATORS Paul & Diane Andberg GWRRA # andberg@mindspring.com Northward Bound I should be traveling between Seward, Alaska to Homer as you meet for your June Chapter Gathering. My son, Brent, and I are spending Saturday night in Homer, but your Florida meeting will be 6 hours ahead of us. We will be traveling on a pair of BMW F650GS-Twin motorcycles, rented in Anchorage. As I write this, I am in the process of preparing for my trip, so I am reviewing clothing options. The thing that bothers me is that the temperatures have been averaging a good ten degrees or more below normal. It seems the highs (in Anchorage, Homer, and Valdez) have only been around 45 degrees during the day. In addition, the rain probability has been 50% for the last week. They should be having highs approaching 60 degrees by this time of year! I have decided to take my black leather motorcycle jacket, which I only wear about once a year. It is warmer than that yellow jacket you normally see me in. I did not have a nice reflective vest that fit over the leather jacket since I rarely wear it, and when I do Diane is normally riding behind me with her reflective vest so there is plenty of visibility from the rear. I have not been impressed with any of the vests I have seen lately, but on Nolan s suggestion I stopped in at a Tractor Supply store yesterday ( I wanted a vest that contained plenty of reflective material, fit fairly snugly over my jacket so it did not flap in the wind, and that had a zippered front with no Velcro adjustments. I found just what I was looking for priced at $ Ken Long suggested I look at Home Depot; and their vest looked pretty good, but it was totally adjustable with Velcro. While this might normally be an advantage, I will be riding with no fairing and only a small windshield possibly in high winds. I did not want to have to fight Velcro adjustments/closures that might rip open in the wind. Another planning challenge is what to take and how to travel. Since we will have to take everything with us on the bikes, I will probably be limited to a small carry-on on the plane. I ll also have to carry my heavy leather jacket (or wear it) and my helmet. The motorcycles have panniers for storage: 9 liters in the left and 38 liters in the right pannier. I am going to have to figure out how much space that actually is for storing clothes. I wonder if I will get looks boarding the plane to Alaska carrying a leather jacket and helmet. It s a good thing people are not expected to dress up for travel like they were years ago. So, wish me luck on the airplane and on the highways. We will also be taking the Alaska Marine Highway (a ferry) from Whittier to Valdez. This is a 6-hour automobile-ferry ride across Prince William Sound. Since we have motorcycles, we are required to bring our own tie-downs since it can get rough and the bikes can get tossed around on the boat. On the plus side: it is whale season and we are likely to see whales. If possible, I will get a photo of me sitting on a motorcycle pointing to a whale in the ocean. (I ll have more stories later.) Paul Andberg, MEC

9 June, GWRRA FL1-Wings... Page ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS Kevin & Claire Lang GWRRA # traildawglang@gmail.com My Love of Touring/Travel Inspired by an article in the May 01 edition of Wing World, For the Love of Touring. I believe there are two types of people in the world; those that love to travel and those that prefer to stay home. This philosophy is true for motorcycle riders. There are those that prefer to stay close to home and only take day trips, and there are those more adventuresome souls that will take weeks at a time and Tour/Travel. I love the adventures and experiences of traveling. I got my wander lust from my parents but not when I was a kid growing up. I have four brothers, so with the expense and headaches of raising five boys, there was not any money left for traveling. The extent of our vacations consisted of loading us five boys into a station wagon and traveling to my grandparents, so my dad could do chores around their house. Our neighbor at the time, bought a motorcycle, then my dad bought one too, and I was hooked on motorcycling from that point on. My mom did not like to ride, so my dad would take us kids for day rides. As we grew up and moved on, I wound up in Ohio with my motorcycle and my parents lived in Florida. Every summer, I would meet my dad in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and ride the Blue Ridge Parkway together. What great memories! Not only the love of motorcycling, but now the love of traveling became ingrained in me. When my parents retired, they not only sold the motorcycle, but sold their house and moved into a motorhome. They took traveling to a whole new level. After living such a hard life, it was nice to see them thoroughly enjoying life in their retirement. Our plans are to follow in their footsteps, with one exception; I am taking my motorcycle with me. Safe travels, Kevin & Claire Lang, ACD Additional Notes from Gary Hoop: As a reminder, due to the usual Florida heat, we are not planning any long chapter rides for June, July or August. We do have several brunch meet-ups and tire kicks scheduled wherein we meet at the restaurant. Check the newsletter calendar or the website for details. We hope to see you there! Speaking of long rides, the trip planning for our chapter ride to North Carolina is well under way. The dates for the ride are September 10 through 15. We ve picked out a route, motels, and detailed ride plans for exploring beautiful western North Carolina in the early fall. Rides will be on the Cherohala Skyway, the Dragon and the Blue Ridge Parkway. We ll even venture into Tennessee for a short time. Send me an (twohoops@usanet.net) for any needed information. The itinerary is on page 8 of this issue of the newsletter. At our last staff meeting, Carolyn gave the September chapter ride a name! It will now be known as The Great Smoky Mountain Ride. I like that. You can think of it as either Great Smokies, or Great Ride. Whichever way, it still comes out as a Great time! Come join us as we always endeavor to Ride Safe!
