Being out in the heat can be dangerous and even threaten our health. Heat exhaustion can lead to Heat Stroke and even death. These are easily avoidable if we just take a few precautions. It s important to be aware of the ambient temperatures (your surroundings) and your body's temperature. Human bodies exchange heat (cool) with their surroundings by convection, conduction, radiation, and evaporative (cooling from perspiration). When ambient temperatures are below the body's normal temperature of 98.6 F, all of these pathways can provide cooling. The higher the wind speed, the more cooling there is from convection. However, above 98.6 ambient temps more wind actually causes heating which becomes a bad thing. Around here our temperatures sometimes get up to 99 or 100 which will affect our body s ability to cool itself. When temperatures are below 98.6 F, you may perspire less but when the temps get above your body temp the need for evaporative cooling kicks in. Your perspiration rate can increase dramatically. If you aren't drinking enough water under extreme conditions, you will start becoming dehydrated. Your perspiration rate will decrease, you will feel hotter, your heart rate will increase, and your judgement will start to become clouded Indicators of heat stroke include: Headache Dizziness Disorientation Hot, dry skin Sluggish Be Safe out there; Marc Oakley Chapter Web Master Mike Randall randme@bellsouth.net

4 HARTLEY HAPPENINGS Hello Wingnutts, and welcome to the month of July. Terry and I hope everyone is doing well. Try and take advantage of as many events scheduled on our ride calendar as possible, and get in some extra riding if you can. We know that this time of year there seems to be a lot of rain in the area so we ve planned a lot of morning (breakfast) rides for the month of July. See you on the road. First, we hope everyone had a great time and have enjoyed our calendar rides. We try to make it interesting so if there is some place you would like to go, please let one of the staff know so we can get it on the calendar. We always look forward to visiting new places and welcome your input. We hope everyone enjoyed the activities the past few days with all the fireworks in the area. Happy Birthday America. Wing Ding will be here before you know it and I know there are quite a few from our Chapter planning on heading to Knoxville, Tennessee to enjoy it. If you haven t made reservations yet or signed up to go, it s not too late. Come join us and have a great time riding some great countryside. The journey will be worth it. At the June Chapter gathering the following took place: we had visitors from Chapter J and Chapter Y. The Patch drawing was won by Ralph Mathis. Door prizes were won by: Wayne Wright, Jim Louden, Geno Jette, Jeff Cox, Bruce Hutchison, Roberta Hair (FL1-Y), Judy Rutherford and Mike Bible. Thank you all who brought door prizes. The drawing for those who brought door prizes was won by Kathie Jette. The evening s drawings were won by Bruce Hutchison and Ralph Mathis. The Ride Jar drawing was won by Terry Hartley. Mike Randall drew the winning ticket. Goldwing tickets were won by Jeff Cox. Remember if you visit another chapter don t forget to fill out a visitation form. You can visit either our website or the District website to download a copy of the new Visitation form for this year. Make a few copies and put them in your bike, car or other mode of transportation. When you re out and about, visiting a chapter or other event in the area, please fill one of these out and give it to either Terry or me, and we will ensure that they are accounted for. We need everyone to help with visitation so we can show other chapters that we are a riding and visiting chapter. Remember, you must have at least three people in your group to count for visitation. The chapter with the most visitation points each year wins $100! Congratulations to the following members on their GWRRA anniversaries: Noah, Bonnie, Karla & Krista Hinton 07/01 Richard Wiggs 07/04 As always, ride safe and remember (ATGATT) All the Gear All the Time! Gary & Terry Hartley, Membership Enhancement Coordinators
5 Being Prepared For The Ride and...what If's In addition to wearing proper riding gear when riding our bikes, keeping certain things on our bikes at all times can save ourselves big headaches along with a few expletives. 1. A spare key. (Leave yours in your ignition when we stop and watch it disappear) 2. A list of all your medications. (secure and dry in an empty pill container) kept in the right front lockable pocket. 3. A first aid kit on board for yourself and or fellow riders. 4. Insurance card. 5. Current Registration. 6. Fire Extinguisher A few hand tools that could be necessary for your own rescue or to rescue a fellow rider which could include, a charged up jump starter, tire plugs and a small air compressor. Just a few ideas to get you back to civilization where proper and more permanent repairs can be made. Prepare yourself for inclement weather that could arise, to include rain gear, a damp chamois type cloth for cleaning a wet windshield, face mask, goggles or glasses. In addition, maybe a change of clothes just in case of a good soaker. Being prepared for things that may or could happen are important for our comfort, safety and enjoyment of the ride. Thanks to all for being a part of the fun of our lives. Have a good ride, stay focused and be safe. Bob Manes Motorist Awareness Coordinator
6 History of GWRRA's Rider Education Program Part 2. A new National Safety Director, Bill Kitchin, took over in January 1987, with plans for an extensive series of videotaped training modules. Kitchin also proposed formation of a non-profit charitable foundation to fund these modules. A series of events delayed these plans, however. The longest lasting legacy Bill Kitchin left for GWRRA Rider Education was separation of the Safe Rider Program from the High Miles Program (still in force today), and the concept of video-taped seminars for use at the chapter level and by individual Members. In July 1987, Robert "Pete" Woodruff began doing motorcycle safety seminars at GWRRA rallies and Wing Ding. By September, Woodruff had been named National Rider Education Director, a post he held until January 31, Woodruff, a safety professional with Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company in Marietta, Georgia, swiftly put his professional and organizational skills to work, transforming shoe boxes of "Safe Miles" forms into a computerized data base capable of handling what was about to become explosive growth in Rider Education participation. Taking many of the concepts of his predecessors and putting them into action, he also added whole new programs and involvement opportunities for Members eager to participate. Woodruff released a flood of energy previously unseen on the safety side of the GWRRA organization. In March 1988, GWRRA announced its new Rider Education Program, listing Levels I, II, and III with both Rider and Co-Rider involvement. In addition, the Rider Education Division instituted on-site MSF-certified Rider Courses at Wing Ding and many GWRRA Region and District rallies. Woodruff also went into the studio to produce his highly entertaining and informative series of video-taped seminars on "Co-Rider", "Touring & Braking" and "Trailering". In 1989, the enthusiastic demand of the GWRRA membership for another level of Rider Education was fulfilled with the addition of Level IV-Master Tour Rider, the program's highest level of accomplishment. In late 1995, the GWRRA Rider Education leadership recognized the need for enhanced Rider training above and beyond that which was then being offered. Plans were instituted for the founding of a completely new organization to be known as the Academy of Rider Training, or ART. In February 1996, Pete Woodruff was named Executive Director of the Academy of Rider Training. He was charged with the responsibility for the planning and the implementation of advanced rider training courses. i.e. Two-up, Trikes, Trailering, Sidecars, Trip and Tour Planning and Group Riding. Those courses, and others, will be released as soon as they are researched and their curriculums developed and instructors trained.
